Nektar
Nektar (German for Nectar) is a 1970s English progressive rock band originally based in Germany.
Early history
The band formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1969. Members included Englishmen Roye Albrighton on guitars and vocals, Allan "Taff" Freeman on keyboards, Derek "Mo" Moore on bass, Ron Howden on drums, and Mick Brockett on lights and special effects. Songwriting was always considered a group effort.
The band's early albums Journey to the Centre of the Eye, A Tab in the Ocean, and ...Sounds Like This were obscure psychedelic rock albums that won the band a growing cult following, based largely on word of mouth. The last of those albums was the first Nektar album to be released in the U.S., on the small Passport Records label.
Success
Nektar's second U.S. release, Remember the Future (1973), propelled the band briefly into mass popularity. A concept album about a blind boy who communicates with an extraterrestrial being, the music was a big leap forward for the band, with a much more melodic sound than on previous albums. It shot into the Top 20 album charts in the U.S. The follow-up album, Down to Earth (1974), was another concept album with a circus theme; it also sold well, breaking into the Top 40 album charts and included Nektar's only song to chart on the Billboard singles charts, "Astral Man". The next album, Recycled (1975), was stylistically close to bands like Gentle Giant and carried on the band's close connection with progressive rock.

The original Passport label pressing. Digitized with a Lenco L75, Shure V15III (Ed Saunders Stylus), Onkyo P-3060R, Denon AVP-5000 and PreSonus Inspire 1394. The cover art is the best image I could find, this is not the Bellaphon label pressing. Enjoy! Sorry it's so noisy, I have no record cleaning machine yet. DISCLAIMER: I do not own this, I do not profess to own it, but it has come to my attention that the original mix is not available on here (or much of anywhere), so here it is.

Die frühen 70er, die Zeit der Konzeptalben und der ausladenden Werke, da wollten auch Nektar nicht zurückstehen und veröffentlichten ein im Zeitgeist liegendes Werk in zwei Teilen, die ursprünglich jeweils eine Seite einer LP bildeten. Im CD-Zeitalter kommt dies natürlich nicht mehr so zum tragen und man hat einfach eine (relativ kurze) CD mit zwei Titeln vor sich. Auch so ein Fingerzeig dafür, dass mit der Einführung der CD auch gewisser früher vorhandener ästhetischer Genuss verloren gegangen ist... aber das ist ein anderes Thema ;-)
Was bieten uns Nektar nun bei der "Erinnerung an die Zukunft"? Kurz gesagt: Nektar sind hier so nahe wie nie zuvor und niemals später am 'klassischen' symphonischen Prog. Geboten wird die Nektar-übliche Mischung aus sirrenden, manchmal rockigen Gitarren über eher schlichten, aber treibenden Rhythmen, gepaart mit gutem Solo- und Chorgesang. Soweit nichts neues, aber mindestens im Teil 1 von "Remember The Future" spielen die Keyboards mehr Parts, haben mehr tragende Anteile als auf den anderen Nektar-Alben. Dies beschwört eine Atmosphäre herauf, die aus einer eigenwilligen Mischung aus Psychedelic- und Spacerock auf der einen, und symphonischem Prog-Rock auf der anderen Seite besteht.
Im Teil 2 wird diese Linie ein Stück weit aufgegeben. Hier dominiert wieder eindeutig die Gitarre als führendes Instrument und brilliert in verzerrten Slide-Soli und Wah-Wah-Attacken. Insgesamt kommt der zweite Teil auch deutlich rockender aus den Boxen und die Keyboards sind wieder in den Hintergrund gedrängt. Insgesamt kommt hier eher so ein "Ende-60er-Flower-Power-Feeling" mit Rockgroove auf...
Trotzdem: Dieses Album dürfte für Progheads das Interessanteste sein. Einsteiger bekommen hier schöne Musik geboten, wenn's unbedingt nur ein Nektar-Album sein soll, dann ist das keine schlechte Wahl, aber die noch bessere Wahl in diesem Fall wäre wohl die "Highlights"-Compilation...

From playing tennis to working from home, seeing the lemurs to kitesurfing , join us for a taste of island life. I've never had a desk in an office since I was a teenager. I prefer to work in a hammock, on a sofa or even in a bath. Now that's flexible working! It's critical to get the balance between work and play right. Find time for yourself; work hard but also play hard. I think people work more effectively when they are given the freedom to make their own decisions -- that is definitely something we practice on Necker. The original Passport label pressing. Digitized with a Lenco L75, Shure V15III (Ed Saunders Stylus), Onkyo P-3060R, Denon AVP-5000 and PreSonus Inspire 1394. The cover art is the best image I could find, this is not the Bellaphon label pressing. Enjoy! Sorry it's so noisy, I have no record cleaning machine yet. Die frühen 70er, die Zeit der Konzeptalben und der ausladenden Werke, da wollten auch Nektar nicht zurückstehen und veröffentlichten ein im Zeitgeist liegendes Werk in zwei Teilen, die ursprünglich jeweils eine Seite einer LP bildeten. Im CD-Zeitalter kommt dies natürlich nicht mehr so zum tragen und man hat einfach eine (relativ kurze) CD mit zwei Titeln vor sich. Auch so ein Fingerzeig dafür, dass mit der Einführung der CD auch gewisser früher vorhandener ästhetischer Genuss verloren gegangen ist... aber das ist ein anderes Thema ;-)
Was bieten uns Nektar nun bei der "Erinnerung an die Zukunft"? Kurz gesagt: Nektar sind hier so nahe wie nie zuvor und niemals später am 'klassischen' symphonischen Prog. Geboten wird die Nektar-übliche Mischung aus sirrenden, manchmal rockigen Gitarren über eher schlichten, aber treibenden Rhythmen, gepaart mit gutem Solo- und Chorgesang. Soweit nichts neues, aber mindestens im Teil 1 von "Remember The Future" spielen die Keyboards mehr Parts, haben mehr tragende Anteile als auf den anderen Nektar-Alben. Dies beschwört eine Atmosphäre herauf, die aus einer eigenwilligen Mischung aus Psychedelic- und Spacerock auf der einen, und symphonischem Prog-Rock auf der anderen Seite besteht.
Im Teil 2 wird diese Linie ein Stück weit aufgegeben. Hier dominiert wieder eindeutig die Gitarre als führendes Instrument und brilliert in verzerrten Slide-Soli und Wah-Wah-Attacken. Insgesamt kommt der zweite Teil auch deutlich rockender aus den Boxen und die Keyboards sind wieder in den Hintergrund gedrängt. Insgesamt kommt hier eher so ein "Ende-60er-Flower-Power-Feeling" mit Rockgroove auf...
Trotzdem: Dieses Album dürfte für Progheads das Interessanteste sein. Einsteiger bekommen hier schöne Musik geboten, wenn's unbedingt nur ein Nektar-Album sein soll, dann ist das keine schlechte Wahl, aber die noch bessere Wahl in diesem Fall wäre wohl die "Highlights"-Compilation...
