Charles Laughton 'I, Claudius' - Dirk Bogarde and 'The Epic That Never Was'

In 1937, filming began on "I, Claudius," from the Robert Graves novel, with Charles Laughton in the title role. The cast also included Merle Oberon, Flora Robson, Emlyn Williams and Robert Newton. Producer Alexander Korda hired Josef von Sternberg to direct but once the cameras started rolling it became evident that Laughton was having great difficulty in getting into his part. Matters went from bad to worse, so that when Merle Oberon was involved in a car crash and hospitalised for several weeks, it was looked on, in Emlyn Williams's words, "as a godsend" and the film was abandoned altogether. In 1965, a TV programme investigated this unfinished project in a documentary narrated by Dirk Bogarde entitled 'The Epic That Never Was.' The surviving participants (including Oberon, Williams, Robson and von Sternberg) were interviewed and several of the finished scenes were shown. Also shown were the fascinating rushes and out-takes in which Laughton forgot his lines or stormed off the set. It is clear from what has survived that had he been able to bring off another great performance, this could have been another of his classic 1930s movies. However, we must be grateful for what has survived in this excellent and remarkable documentary.

There are cue cards off stage but it looks as if Laughton didn't need them. Absolutely marvelous !

Charles Laughton as King Henry VIII - Chicken Eating Scene

Charles Laughton became the first actor in a British film to win an Oscar for his portrayal of the much-married monarch in "The Private Life of Henry VIII" (1933). In this famous scene, he's in a state of fury at having been nagged by all and sundry, including the royal barber, to marry yet again, despite having had three wives already. By the end of the film he has had six wives, the fifth of whom, Catherine Howard (played here by Binnie Barnes) sings to him during dinner once he's finished demolishing his chicken.

"Sanctuary!" - Charles Laughton 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'

Here is a scene from one of the greatest films of the 1930s. The gypsy girl Esmeralda (Maureen O'Hara) has been sentenced to hang for witchcraft in front of Notre Dame cathedral by the Chief Justice (Sir Cedric Hardwicke). She is saved from certain death by the cathedral bell-ringer Quasimodo (Charles Laughton) to the delight of Gringoire, who loves her (played by a young Edmond O'Brien) and given sanctuary. Halliwell's Film Guide writes: "This superb 1939 remake is one of the best examples of Hollywood expertise at work; art direction, set construction, costumes, camera, lighting and above all direction brilliantly support an irresistible story and bravura acting." The set of Notre Dame Cathedral was still standing from the 1923 Lon Chaney silent version, so was re-used in this picture. The director (William Dieterle) was noted for his handling of huge crowds, as here, who had to endure a Californian heatwave during the outdoor scenes. The musical score was one of Alfred Newman's finest and was nominated for an Oscar. However, there were in fact no Oscar wins for this film in 1939 but it was up against enormous competition, with 'Gone with the Wind' sweeping the board that year. Nevertheless it remains a classic movie and contains one of Laughton's very finest screen roles. (Scene uploaded from the Warner Bros. DVD with all due acknowledgements.)

Charles Laughton (1 July 1899 – 15 December 1962) was an English-born American stage and film actor, screenwriter, producer and director.

Laughton was born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, the son of Robert Laughton and his wife Elizabeth (née Conlon), Yorkshire hotel keepers. His mother was a devout Roman Catholic of Irish descent. He attended Stonyhurst College, a Jesuit school, in Lancashire. He served during World War I (in which he was gassed) first with the 2/1st Battalion of the Huntingdonshire Cyclist Regiment and later with the 7th Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment.

In 'Advise and Consent', Charles Laughton played a right-wing Southern senator (Seeb Cooley) wholly opposed to the US President's appointment of a new Secretary of State (the equivalent of the UK's Foreign Secretary) named Robert A. Leffingwell (played by Henry Fonda). The appointment has to be approved by the Senate but Cooley believes the Leffingwell character to be a left-wing appeaser and urges his fellow senators to reject him. Also in this clip are Don Murray, Walter Pidgeon and Peter Lawford. This was Laughton's last film role and he died of cancer only a few months after the movie's release in 1962. His roster of films included many great screen portrayals in the 1930s, such as Henry VIII, Nero, Captain Bligh, Rembrandt, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His last films in the 1950s and '60s were also memorable and included Hobson's Choice, Witness for the Prosecution, Spartacus, and the only film he directed, The Night of the Hunter.

In 1937, filming began on "I, Claudius," from the Robert Graves novel, with Charles Laughton in the title role. The cast also included Merle Oberon, Flora Robson, Emlyn Williams and Robert Newton. Producer Alexander Korda hired Josef von Sternberg to direct but once the cameras started rolling it became evident that Laughton was having great difficulty in getting into his part. Matters went from bad to worse, so that when Merle Oberon was involved in a car crash and hospitalised for several weeks, it was looked on, in Emlyn Williams's words, "as a godsend" and the film was abandoned altogether. In 1965, a TV programme investigated this unfinished project in a documentary narrated by Dirk Bogarde entitled 'The Epic That Never Was.' Charles Laughton became the first actor in a British film to win an Oscar for his portrayal of the much-married monarch in "The Private Life of Henry VIII" (1933). In this famous scene, he's in a state of fury at having been nagged by all and sundry, including the royal barber, to marry yet again, despite having had three wives already. By the end of the film he has had six wives, the fifth of whom, Catherine Howard (played here by Binnie Barnes) sings to him during dinner once he's finished demolishing his chicken.

Here is a scene from one of the greatest films of the 1930s. The gypsy girl Esmeralda (Maureen O'Hara) has been sentenced to hang for witchcraft in front of Notre Dame cathedral by the Chief Justice (Sir Cedric Hardwicke). She is saved from certain death by the cathedral bell-ringer Quasimodo (Charles Laughton) to the delight of Gringoire, who loves her (played by a young Edmond O'Brien) and given sanctuary. Halliwell's Film Guide writes: "This superb 1939 remake is one of the best examples of Hollywood expertise at work; art direction, set construction, costumes, camera, lighting and above all direction brilliantly support an irresistible story and bravura acting." The set of Notre Dame Cathedral was still standing from the 1923 Lon Chaney silent version, so was re-used in this picture...
'Advise and Consent' - Charles Laughton's last movie
In 'Advise and Consent', Charles Laughton played a right-wing Southern senator (Seeb Cooley) wholly opposed to the US President's appointment of a new Secretary of State (the equivalent of the UK's Foreign Secretary) named Robert A. Leffingwell (played by Henry Fonda). The appointment has to be approved by the Senate but Cooley believes the Leffingwell character to be a left-wing appeaser and urges his fellow senators to reject him. Also in this clip are Don Murray, Walter Pidgeon and Peter Lawford. This was Laughton's last film role and he died of cancer only a few months after the movie's release in 1962. His roster of films included many great screen portrayals in the 1930s, such as Henry VIII, Nero, Captain Bligh, Rembrandt, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His last films in the 1950s ...

In 'Advise and Consent', Charles Laughton played a right-wing Southern senator (Seeb Cooley) wholly opposed to the US President's appointment of a new Secretary of State (the equivalent of the UK's Foreign Secretary) named Robert A. Leffingwell (played by Henry Fonda). The appointment has to be approved by the Senate but Cooley believes the Leffingwell character to be a left-wing appeaser and urges his fellow senators to reject him. Also in this clip are Don Murray, Walter Pidgeon and Peter Lawford. This was Laughton's last film role and he died of cancer only a few months after the movie's release in 1962. Hard on the heels of the start of a brilliant Hollywood career and an Oscar-winning performance in 'The Private Life of Henry VIII,' Charles Laughton returned to the London stage for a series of classical parts at the Old Vic during its 1933-34 season. Among the roles he played were Shakespeare's Henry VIII, Macbeth, Angelo in 'Measure for Measure' and Prospero in 'The Tempest.' The season was a mixed success for Laughton who, it seems, was somewhat unhappy during the runs of the various plays. "The Cop and the Anthem" was one of five short stories by O. Henry which were featured in the 1952 movie "Full House" and introduced by the writer John Steinbeck. Charles Laughton played a tramp who wanted to spend the cold winter in a nice warm jail, so he committed several petty crimes in order to get arrested. One of these was accosting a young lady window-shopping in the hope she'd report him to a nearby policeman. Instead she turned out to be a hooker, played in a one-minute role by a rising young star named Marilyn Monroe. Laughton's fellow tramp in this delightful short comedy was played by David Wayne. Enjoy!

In 1937, filming began on "I, Claudius," from the Robert Graves novel, with Charles Laughton in the title role. The cast also included Merle Oberon, Flora Robson, Emlyn Williams and Robert Newton. Producer Alexander Korda hired Josef von Sternberg to direct but once the cameras started rolling it became evident that Laughton was having great difficulty in getting into his part. Matters went from bad to worse, so that when Merle Oberon was involved in a car crash and hospitalised for several weeks, it was looked on, in Emlyn Williams's words, "as a godsend" and the film was abandoned altogether. In 1965, a TV programme investigated this unfinished project in a documentary narrated by Dirk Bogarde entitled 'The Epic That Never Was.' The surviving participants (including Oberon, Williams, Robson and von Sternberg) were interviewed and several of the finished scenes were shown. Also shown were the fascinating rushes and out-takes in which Laughton forgot his lines or stormed off the set. It is clear from what has survived that had he been able to bring off another great performance, this could have been another of his classic 1930s movies. However, we must be grateful for what has survived in this excellent and remarkable documentary.

Charles Laughton became the first actor in a British film to win an Oscar for his portrayal of the much-married monarch in "The Private Life of Henry VIII" (1933). In this famous scene, he's in a state of fury at having been nagged by all and sundry, including the royal barber, to marry yet again, despite having had three wives already. By the end of the film he has had six wives, the fifth of whom, Catherine Howard (played here by Binnie Barnes) sings to him during dinner once he's finished demolishing his chicken.

Here is a scene from one of the greatest films of the 1930s. The gypsy girl Esmeralda (Maureen O'Hara) has been sentenced to hang for witchcraft in front of Notre Dame cathedral by the Chief Justice (Sir Cedric Hardwicke). She is saved from certain death by the cathedral bell-ringer Quasimodo (Charles Laughton) to the delight of Gringoire, who loves her (played by a young Edmond O'Brien) and given sanctuary. Halliwell's Film Guide writes: "This superb 1939 remake is one of the best examples of Hollywood expertise at work; art direction, set construction, costumes, camera, lighting and above all direction brilliantly support an irresistible story and bravura acting." The set of Notre Dame Cathedral was still standing from the 1923 Lon Chaney silent version, so was re-used in this picture. The director (William Dieterle) was noted for his handling of huge crowds, as here, who had to endure a Californian heatwave during the outdoor scenes. The musical score was one of Alfred Newman's finest and was nominated for an Oscar. However, there were in fact no Oscar wins for this film in 1939 but it was up against enormous competition, with 'Gone with the Wind' sweeping the board that year. Nevertheless it remains a classic movie and contains one of Laughton's very finest screen roles. (Scene uploaded from the Warner Bros. DVD with all due acknowledgements.)

In 'Advise and Consent', Charles Laughton played a right-wing Southern senator (Seeb Cooley) wholly opposed to the US President's appointment of a new Secretary of State (the equivalent of the UK's Foreign Secretary) named Robert A. Leffingwell (played by Henry Fonda). The appointment has to be approved by the Senate but Cooley believes the Leffingwell character to be a left-wing appeaser and urges his fellow senators to reject him. Also in this clip are Don Murray, Walter Pidgeon and Peter Lawford. This was Laughton's last film role and he died of cancer only a few months after the movie's release in 1962. His roster of films included many great screen portrayals in the 1930s, such as Henry VIII, Nero, Captain Bligh, Rembrandt, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His last films in the 1950s and '60s were also memorable and included Hobson's Choice, Witness for the Prosecution, Spartacus, and the only film he directed, The Night of the Hunter.

In what seems to be the Pathe Studios, we see a mock-up of an actor's dressing room. Charles Laughton enters and is helped on with his dressing-gown by a male dresser. Laughton asks "Has he called the half yet, Brown?"; the dresser replies "Not yet, sir". Laughton sits at the dressing table, asks for a towel and begins combing his hair. He then turns to the camera and says "The main idea about this make-up is to make myself look less like a pudding, and more like a Chicago-Italian gangster than usual - observe the secrets of the boudoir...". He turns back towards the mirror and we see various shots of him applying his stage make-up. Laughton's voice on the soundtrack explains each process, including "Greta Garbo eyelashes - very uncomfortable!", 'a nasty little black moustache' and wig. M/S of Laughton putting on a smoking jacket and standing before the camera, smoking a cigar. In character (but with a not very convincing Chicago-Italian accent) he says "Swell fella... nice fella". Hard on the heels of the start of a brilliant Hollywood career and an Oscar-winning performance in 'The Private Life of Henry VIII,' Charles Laughton returned to the London stage for a series of classical parts at the Old Vic during its 1933-34 season. Among the roles he played were Shakespeare's Henry VIII, Macbeth, Angelo in 'Measure for Measure' and Prospero in 'The Tempest.' The season was a mixed success for Laughton who, it seems, was somewhat unhappy during the runs of the various plays. In any event, he thereafter devoted himself almost solely to the movies and provided the cinema with many great performances, ranging from Captain Bligh and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, to Gracchus in 'Spartacus' and Senator Cooley in 'Advise and Consent'. However, he did return to Shakespeare in 1959 for the Stratford-upon-Avon season, playing Bottom in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and the title role in 'King Lear,' again with mixed success. Simon Callow's 1987 TV documentary on Laughton included a brief clip of Laughton as Bottom, taken from an abridged version of the play made for US television. The play's director, Peter Hall, was interviewed by Callow and commented on Laughton's greatness as an actor. Incidentally, also in the cast of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' was Ian Holm, cavorting with Laughton at the end and probably best remembered today as the robot in 'Alien.'

"The Cop and the Anthem" was one of five short stories by O. Henry which were featured in the 1952 movie "Full House" and introduced by the writer John Steinbeck. Charles Laughton played a tramp who wanted to spend the cold winter in a nice warm jail, so he committed several petty crimes in order to get arrested. One of these was accosting a young lady window-shopping in the hope she'd report him to a nearby policeman. Instead she turned out to be a hooker, played in a one-minute role by a rising young star named Marilyn Monroe. Laughton's fellow tramp in this delightful short comedy was played by David Wayne. In 1902 London, unhappily married Philip Marshall (Charles Laughton) meets young Mary Gray (Ella Raines), who is unemployed and depressed. Their deepening friendship, though physically innocent, is discovered by Philip's wife (Rosalind Ivan, playing virtually the same role here as in Fritz Lang's SCARLET STREET a year later), who threatens him with exposure and scandal, driving him to murder her. Thereafter, fortune seems to smile on Philip Marshall; but does fate have a surprise in store? Henry Daniell costars as Philip's ne'er-do-well neighbor.
