Serge is a type of twill fabric that has diagonal lines or ridges on both sides, made with a two-up, two-down weave. The worsted variety is used in making military uniforms, suits, great coats and trench coats. Its counterpart, silk serge, is used for linings. French serge is a softer, finer variety. The word is also used for a high quality woolen woven.

The name is derived from Old French serge, itself from Latin serica, from Greek σηρικος (serikos), meaning "silken". The early association of silk serge, Greece, and France is shown by the discovery in Charlemagne's tomb of a piece of silk serge dyed with Byzantine motifs, evidently a gift from the Byzantine Imperial Court in the 8th or 9th century AD.

From early Saxon times, most English wool ("staples") was exported. In the early sixteenth century it went mainly to a Royal monopoly at Calais (then an English possession) and was woven into cloth in France or the Low Countries. However, with the capture of Calais by the French on 7 January 1558, England began expanding its own weaving industry. This was greatly enhanced by the European Wars of Religion (Eighty Years' War, French Wars of Religion); in 1567 Calvinist refugees from the Low Countries included many skilled serge weavers, while Huguenot refugees in the early eighteenth century included many silk and linen weavers. Denim is a cotton fabric with a similar weave; its name is believed to be derived from "serge de Nîmes" after Nîmes in France.

Claude Chabrol (French: [klod ʃaˈbʁɔl]; 1930–2010) was a French film director, a member of the French New Wave (nouvelle vague) group of filmmakers who first came to prominence at the end of the 1950s. Like his colleagues and contemporaries Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer and Rivette, Chabrol was a critic for the influential film magazine Cahiers du cinéma before beginning his career as a film maker.

Chabrol's career began with Le Beau Serge (1958), inspired by Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943). Thrillers became something of a trademark for Chabrol, with an approach characterized by a distanced objectivity. This is especially apparent in Les Biches (1968), La Femme Infidèle (1969) and Le Boucher (1970) — all featuring his then-wife, Stéphane Audran.

Sometimes characterized as a "mainstream" New Wave director, Chabrol remained prolific and popular throughout his half-century career. In 1978, he cast Isabelle Huppert as the lead in Violette Nozière. On the strength of that effort, the pair went on to others including the successful Madame Bovary (1991) and La Ceremonie (1996).

Manuel Galrinho Bento (born 25 June 1948 in Golegã - died 1 March 2007 in Barreiro) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a goalkeeper.

He is best known for his 20-year spell at S.L. Benfica, having retired well into his 40's. Chosen by Portuguese sports newspaper 'Record' as one of the best 100 Portuguese footballers.

Bento represented Portugal at Euro 1984 and the 1986 World Cup, helping the national team reach the semifinals in the former tournament.

After various youth spells, including one year at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Bento started professionally at F.C. Barreirense, being transferred to S.L. Benfica for 1972–73. He started there as a backup to another legendary Portuguese keeper, José Henrique.

After three years in an interesting battle with Henrique, Bento gained starting status in 1976, at 28, and proceeded to amass more than 700 overall appearances for the Lisbon side.

Bento suffered a severe injury in the 1986 summer on international duty, from which he never recovered fully. He spent the next six years mainly as third-string, behind Silvino and Neno; he was on the bench at both the 1988 and 1990 European Champions Cup finals, lost to PSV Eindhoven and A.C. Milan. The last game of his career came at the end of 1989–90, against C.F. Os Belenenses, in which he was chosen Man of the Match.

Paulo Jorge Gomes Bento (born 20 June 1969; Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpawlu ˈbẽtu]) is a Portuguese retired footballer, and the current manager of Portugal.

A defensive midfielder with tackling ability and workrate as his main assets, he played for two of the major three teams in his country, amassing top division totals of 284 games and 16 goals over the course of 11 seasons, and also spent four years in Spain. He represented the Portuguese national team in one World Cup and one European Championship.

Bento then took up a coaching career, managing Sporting during four years and four months, with relative success, and also being in charge of the national team.

Born in Lisbon, Bento played professionally in his homeland for C.F. Estrela da Amadora, Vitória de Guimarães and S.L. Benfica, and had a four-year abroad spell with La Liga side Real Oviedo (helping the Asturias outfit to always maintain its top flight status) before moving to Sporting Clube de Portugal, where he finished his career as a player. With Sporting, he was part of the star-studded team that achieved the double in 2002 – contributing with 31 games and one goal in the league – under the direction of Laszlo Bölöni, playing alongside João Vieira Pinto and Mário Jardel, among others.
