The Fairy Queen is Purcell's joyous response to A Midsummer Night's Dream, incorporating much of Shakespeare's text into a fascinating carnival of music, theatre and dance. In addition to Shakespeare's characters, Purcell also conjures up a wild array of gods and goddesses, nymphs, sprites, fairies and shepherds, culminating in a lavish wedding ceremony presided over by the great god Hymen himself. Not only does the work contain the composer's finest, wittiest and most inventive score, but it calls for such staggering scenic effects that, when first performed, the cost of the sets and costumes almost bankrupted the theatre. Baroque specialist William Christie returns to conduct the period instruments of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in a performance to mark the 350th anniversary of the composer's birth.

Desmond Barrit
Desmond Barrit (born 19 October 1944) is a Laurence Olivier Award winning, Welsh actor, best known for his stage work.
Biography
Barrit was born on 19 October 1944 in Morriston, Swansea, Wales.
For some years he was a regular in repertory at the Grand Theatre, Swansea.
He has also starred in productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and has appeared at the Chichester Festival Theatre, and the Royal National Theatre. More recently he appeared in The History Boys at Wyndham's Theatre portraying the general studies teacher, Hector, made famous by Richard Griffiths in the film version.
On 7 July 2008, he took over the role of The Wizard from Nigel Planer in the West End production of Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Originally set to begin 9 June, his performance had to be postponed to undergo an operation. He played his last performance on 9 May 2009 and was replaced by Sam Kelly. Barrit returned to the role for select performances in July and August 2009 while Kelly was out on medical leave. He shared the part with understudy Sean Needham.

The Merry Wives of Windsor
The Merry Wives of Windsor is a comedy by William Shakespeare, first published in 1602, though believed to have been written prior to 1597. The Windsor of the play's title is a reference to Windsor Castle in Berkshire, England, and though nominally set in the reign of Henry IV, the play makes no pretence to exist outside contemporary Elizabethan era English middle class life. It features the character Sir John Falstaff, the fat knight who had previously been featured in Henry IV Parts 1 and 2. It has been adapted for the opera on several occasions.

Royal Shakespeare Company
The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is a major British theatre company, based in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. The company employs 700 staff and produces around 20 productions a year from its home in Stratford-upon-Avon and plays regularly in London, Newcastle upon Tyne and on tour across the UK and internationally.
The company’s home is in Stratford-upon-Avon, where it has recently redeveloped its Royal Shakespeare and Swan theatres as part of a £112.8-million "Transformation" project. The theatres re-opened in November 2010, having closed in 2007. The new buildings attracted 18,000 visitors within the first week and received a positive media response both upon opening, and following the first full Shakespeare performances. Performances in Stratford-upon-Avon continued throughout the Transformation project at the temporary Courtyard Theatre.
As well as the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, the RSC produces new work from living artists and develops creative links with theatre-makers from around the world, as well as working with teachers to inspire a lifelong love of William Shakespeare in young people and running events for everyone to explore and participate in its work.

The Break a Leggers review Apologia at the first preview at the Trafalgar Studios in London’s West End.
Written by Alexi Kate Campbell in 2009, this revival is directed by Jamie Lloyd (Assasins, Dr Faustus, The Commitments Musical).
Starring the Tony and Emmy-award winning actress Stockard Channing (Grease, The West Wing) in the title role as Kirstin Miller.
Also in the cast of five are d Freema Agyeman (Dr Who, Sense 8), Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey), Desmond Barrit (History Boys, Wicked) and Joseph Millson (Holby City, Mr Foote’s other leg).

The Fairy Queen is Purcell's joyous response to A Midsummer Night's Dream, incorporating much of Shakespeare's text into a fascinating carnival of music, theatre and dance. In addition to Shakespeare's characters, Purcell also conjures up a wild array of gods and goddesses, nymphs, sprites, fairies and shepherds, culminating in a lavish wedding ceremony presided over by the great god Hymen himself. Not only does the work contain the composer's finest, wittiest and most inventive score, but it calls for such staggering scenic effects that, when first performed, the cost of the sets and costumes almost bankrupted the theatre. Baroque specialist William Christie returns to conduct the period instruments of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in a performance to mark the 350th anniversary of the composer's birth.

Plot:
The play consists of four interconnecting plots, connected by a celebration of the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazon queen, Hippolyta, which is set simultaneously in the woodland and in the realm of Fairyland, under the light of the moon.
The play opens with Hermia, who is in love with Lysander, resistant to her father Egeus' demand that she wed Demetrius, whom he has arranged for her to marry. Helena meanwhile pines unrequitedly for Demetrius. Enraged, Egeus invokes an ancient Athenian law before Duke Theseus, whereby a daughter must marry the suitor chosen by her father, or else face death. Theseus offers her another choice: lifelong chastity while worshipping the goddess Artemis as a nun.
Peter Quince and his fellow players Nick Bottom, Francis Flute, Robin Starveling, Tom Snout, and Snug plan to put on a play for the wedding of the Duke and the Queen, "the most lamentable comedy and most cruel death of Pyramus and Thisbe". Quince reads the names of characters and bestows them to the players. Nick Bottom, who is playing the main role of Pyramus, is over-enthusiastic and wants to dominate others by suggesting himself for the characters of Thisbe, the Lion, and Pyramus at the same time. He would also rather be a tyrant and recites some lines of Ercles. Bottom is told by Quince that he would do the Lion so terribly as to frighten the duchess and ladies enough for the Duke and Lords to have the players hanged. Quince ends the meeting with "at the Duke's oak we meet."
