Compost Toilet Outhouse: $500
The composting outhouse featured in this video is available for SALE on Craigslist

We live on a rural property where we spend most of our time far away from our house, so we built a composting toilet outhouse with leftover building supplies. A compost toilet is far better than a traditional outhouse because the material doesn't get stinky the way anaerobic decomposition does, and the contents don't build up in one place along with wood ash or lye, which changes the chemistry of the soil and makes it toxic for years to come (at least 100!). This compost toilet requires nothing but sawdust, and when we empty the bin, soil microbes digest the contents and make the nutrients available to landscape plants. Watch as we show you our little structure and the details that make it work for us. It's been up and running for at least four months now, it's served around 60 people at a time throughout weekend gatherings and it doesn't stink! At the very worst you can sometimes smell an odor of damp sawdust that reminds me a little of a hamster cage. We hooked this little four foot square structure up with motion sensing exterior and interior lights, standing seam steel roofing, a standard toilet seat, a birch plywood bench, and a hinged hatch on the back to make it easy to remove the collection bin. An outhouse is a small structure separate from a main building which often contained a simple toilet (for example a pit toilet or pail closet) and may possibly also be used for housing animals and storage.
The term "outhouse" is used in North American English for the structure around a simple pit toilet. Outhouses used as toilets are referred to by many terms around the English-speaking world including Dunny (Australia),Biffy (U.S. Girl Scouting), and Kybo (Scouting worldwide).
The term "outhouse" may also be used for any small building away from a main building, used for a variety of purposes, but mainly for activities not wanted in the main house. Outhouses are used for storage, animals, and cooking, to name a few uses. Larger structures have names such as barn, stable, woodshed, detached garage and storage shed.
In Australia this toilet is frequently referred to as a dunny or "thunderbox". Waste deposited in earth closets was euphemistically referred to as "nightsoil". In suburban areas not connected to the sewerage, such outhouses were not built over pits. Instead, waste was collected into large cans, or "dunny-cans", which were positioned under the toilet, to be collected by contractors (or "nightsoil collectors") hired by the local council. Collected waste matter would then be removed from the premises and disposed of elsewhere. The contractors would replace the used cans with empty, cleaned cans. Until the 1970s Brisbane relied heavily on this form of sanitation.

We live on a rural property where we spend most of our time far away from our house, so we built a composting toilet outhouse with leftover building supplies. A compost toilet is far better than a traditional outhouse because the material doesn't get stinky the way anaerobic decomposition does, and the contents don't build up in one place along with wood ash or lye, which changes the chemistry of the soil and makes it toxic for years to come (at least 100!). This compost toilet requires nothing but sawdust, and when we empty the bin, soil microbes digest the contents and make the nutrients available to landscape plants. Watch as we show you our little structure and the details that make it work for us. It's been up and running for at least four months now, it's served around 60 people at a time throughout weekend gatherings and it doesn't stink! At the very worst you can sometimes smell an odor of damp sawdust that reminds me a little of a hamster cage. We hooked this little four foot square structure up with motion sensing exterior and interior lights, standing seam steel roofing, a standard toilet seat, a birch plywood bench, and a hinged hatch on the back to make it easy to remove the collection bin.
