Bumming Cigarettes: Actor Interviews - Alia Hatch (VEE)
ABOUT THE FILM
Bumming Cigarettes is a short film about a brief and intimate meeting between a young Black lesbian woman who is in the process of taking an HIV test and a middle aged Black Gay HIV Positive man. Coming off of the devastation of a bad breakup with a girlfriend, Vee musters up the courage to go and take an HIV test to put her worst fears to rest. What she experiences during her trip to a local clinic is much more than she expects while sharing a cigarette with a stranger, Jimmy during the 10 minutes that she awaits her test results. This film explores tough issues that persons living with HIV/AIDS may encounter such as the loss of intimacy with loved ones while also encouraging awareness around HIV/AIDs testing and the way we treat persons living with the disease.

The Trails of Spotted Tail - promotional short documentary
The Trails of Spotted Tail is a project documenting the history and lives of the Spotted Tail Clan from the Rosebud Reservation (Brule Lakota tribe) in South Dakota. From interviews with elder descendants, the collection of historical photographs that are scattered in basements and shoeboxes across the reservation, and historical documentation, the project will tell the story of Spotted Tail (Sinte Galeska), the great War Hero and Head Chief of the Brule tribe and his descendants which have followed; their insights and stories of being connected to the famous chief and their life on the reservation. This film will shed new light on the legacy of the Chief, who though lesser known than contemporaries such as Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, and his own nephew Crazy Horse, was arguably the most insightful and clever of the great Lakota leaders. Born in a wild Sioux camp around 1825, Spotted Tail grew to be a war chief against the Pawnee and white settlers. In return for the safety of his tribe, he surrendered to US Troops and was imprisoned for several years at Ft. Laramie, during which he witnessed river boats, cities, and a sea of marching soldiers. Convinced that war with the whites would eventually bring only death, he began to preach peace with the United States in an attempt to ensure a future for his people. As Head Chief, he traveled to the East, negotiated in the White House, viewed the giant buildings of New York and the endless boats of immigrants. He knew that assimilation was inevitable but, against the desire of the US Government, worked to stretch this process out over generations to ensure the Sioux way of life could adapt slowly and continue to live on.
“Spotted Tail had inborn abilities that, when developed by experience, enabled him to deal on equal terms with presidents of the United States, cabinet members, and generals of the army. He dealt with them and often got the better of the dealings." 1.
The life of Spotted Tail is the story of a individual ahead of his time, a generous man, a warrior, a leader who provided for his people, not succumbing to the greed and alcoholism plaguing those around him, and who wanted only the survival of his culture during a time of unfathomable change. Spotted Tail, wanting peace and not war with the United States, has been criticized over the years as being more of a friend to the whites than to the Indians . This controversy may have lead to his death as he was assassinated by one of his own, Crow Dog, in 1882. Stories have also pointed to a feud over a female as the motive, yet history cannot accurately explain what happened during this complex time of early reservation adaption. His son, William Spotted Tail, was elected Chief and carried on tribal leadership until his death in 1934, marking the end of the Brule Chief Era. Chief William Spotted Tail had two children, Elizabeth and Steven and through them there are an estimated 500 direct descendants and members of the old Chief Spotted Tail’s extended family with no easy or recorded method to connect them to him. Their stories are those of early reservation life, boarding schools, memories of the first non-Indians they encountered as children, ceremonies, tribal life throughout the 1900's, and their life today and hopes for generations to come.
This film is under the direction of Jon Cournoyer, a great-great-great grandson of Spotted Tail with the supervision of his father Ronald Cournoyer and the endorsement of the Spotted Tail Clan. There is a raw, loose feel to the footage in The Trails of Spotted Tail, as it's the film makers desire to capture subjects in thier everyday setting rather than a studio setting, whether its recording casual visits around a kitchen table or interviewing in small, government housing in remote parts of the South Dakota prairie. Recording an accurate depiction of reservation life on film, in addition to the collection and preservation of historical photographs and material will be a valuable resource for not only Lakota history but American History as well and hopefully serve as an example for other Native tribes and lineages to begin similar projects as well.
