AFL Open Mike 2012 - Dermott Brereton Part 1
The start of the 1989 Grand Final was the most infamous of all Grand Final starts when Geelong's Mark Yeates ran from the wing over to Hawthorn's centre half forward where Hawk Dermott Brereton was standing, charged straight into him and breaking several of Brereton's ribs. It was payback for an incident in the previous match between these two great sides. It was Round 6, Saturday 6th May 1989, at Princes Park early in the final quarter. After Brereton felt hard done by when he was not given a free kick for a hard block from Geelong's Gary Ablett, he charged straight for the Geelong player who was contesting the ruck dual at the following boundary throw in. That Cat was Yeates and he was collected by Brereton with a punch to the head. This also went unnoticed by the field umpire and would result in payback on the last Saturday in September. The Grand Final incident itself, as well as interviews with Brereton explaining it, can be found here on YouTube, but this I believe is the first time this preceding footage has been shown on the site. Aside from all those individual battles, this was one of the greatest home and away matches ever played. 51 goals were scored in all and Geelong recorded the league's highest ever losing score, after giving up a 56-point lead late in the 2nd quarter. Hawthorn 26.15 (171) defeated Geelong 25.13 (163).

After two years at sea, Sinbad returns to his home, Baghdad. The city is very different from the Baghdad he remembers. It is now in the control of a prince and the grand vizier. He lands himself in prison, where he is reacquainted with his elder brother, Doubar, and discovers he is to be beheaded. When the princess is kidnapped, the Caliph of Baghdad says Sinbad is the only man he knows who is capable of facing Turok, the man who captured the princess. Before Sinbad is beheaded, Doubar comes to the rescue and sets him free. The brothers meet up with the rest of Sinbad's crew and proceed to Turok's lair, in search for Princess Adena. Sinbad tells his crew they need the help of his and Doubar's old mentor, Master Dim-Dim, so the crew head off for the Isle of Dawn, where he resides. They arrive at the island where they meet Dim-Dim and his new apprentice, Maeve, along with her avian companion, Dermott, a hawk. After the crew leaves the island Dim-Dim goes missing and Maeve decides to join Sinbad and his crew in their search for the lost Master. The entire final quarter of the 1989 Victorian Football League (VFL) Grand Final, which was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday 30th September, 1989, between the Hawthorn Football Club (The Hawks) and the Geelong Football Club (The Cats). The 93th VFL Grand Final saw an official attendance of 94,796 spectators. The commentators for this Grand Final were Dennis Cometti, Ian Robertson, Don Scott, and Michael Roberts. The legendary Allan "Yabby" Jeans was Hawthorn's coach, and the legendary Malcolm Blight was Geelong's coach. The final score saw Hawthorn defeating Geelong by 6 points, to hand Hawthorn its eighth Premiership victory, and its fourth of the 1980s (1983, 1986, 1988, 1989), which was also the fourth of five Premierships of that great Hawthorn era (1991 being the fifth). Recorded on VHS from the broadcast of the 2001 AFL Grand Final Marathon, September 29, 2001, on the Seven Network (HSV-7). Vaxfacts: This was the last VFL Grand Final ever played. From 1990, the Victorian Football League officially changed its name to the Australian Football League, so as to become the official national competition, which had not existed in Australia prior to that point. The VFL was the natural choice to evolve into the AFL- not only was it the largest and richest competition in the country, it had become the first league to field a team from outside of its state jurisdiction, when the South Melbourne Swans, due to financial reasons, moved to Sydney, a Rugby League stronghold, in 1982. With the inclusion of the West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears in 1987, the VFL had expanded from a primarily Melbourne metropolitan competition to a national one- the name change completed the transition. This Grand Final featured some of the best players of the last 30 years- for Hawthorn, Michael Tuck, Jason Dunstall, Dermott Brereton, Robert DiPierdomenico and John Platten took the field, while for Geelong, Gary Ablett (Senior), Garry Hocking, Barry Stoneham and Bill Brownless played. This Grand Final was quite a brutal one, with many players suffering some serious injuries- Brereton played most of the match with broken ribs, a bruised kidney and internal bleeding, Platten had suffered concussion, while DiPierdomenico played much of the match with broken ribs and a punctured lung. Hawthorn ended the match with only 13 fit players. Gary Ablett's nine goals equaled the record for goals kicked in a Grand Final, which earned him the Norm Smith Medal, awarded to the best player of the Grand Final.
