Ewan McGregor teases his potential return as “Obi Wan Kenobi” and we have the details right now on Clevver
Newsfeed. If you’ve been wanting to see Ewan McGregor return to world of
Star Wars, you’re not alone!
Actor Ewan McGregor is currently promoting his upcoming biopic of
Miles Davis starring
Don Cheadle and as expected talk quickly turned to Star Wars. Unless you’ve been stranded on some distant desert planet, you’re probably aware that McGregor played
Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi in the
Star Wars prequels and is generally regarded as one of the best parts of the otherwise much-maligned trilogy. Speaking with
Collider, McGregor opened up about his return to the franchise in last year’s,
The Force Awakens. In the movie, the character Rey has a force-vision that includes encouraging words from
Luke Skywalker’s old mentor, Obi Wan Kenobi. We’ve previously reported on the special sound editing techniques used to blend McGregor and original
Obi Wan actor
Alec Guiness’ voices together, but now McGregor was able to elaborate on how his small cameo came to fruition. The actor explained that only weeks out from The Force Awakens premiere he was in
Los Angeles editing footage for his directorial debut,
American Pastoral, when he received an email from director
JJ Abrams explaining the idea for the scene. McGregor hopped on his motorcycle, rode over to
Disney, recorded a few alternate lines, and rode off into the sunset, confirming that he does indeed live the life we could only dream of. Ewan also shared some insight into his Obi Wan portrayal saying he was always trying to do his best young Alec Guiness imitation, explaining that nailing the impersonation was always his goal. Considering how beloved the character and his portrayal was, many have speculated that we could see McGregor return to the role again in a future spinoff movie. When asked if he has met with Lucasfilm
President Kathleen Kennedy about the possibility, McGregor responded that he couldn’t say, but did specifically
point out the time period between
Episode 3 and 4 as potential areas that could be explored explaining quote, “I think there’s a story there. I think that’s the
Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one.
The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and
Alec’s Obi-Wan Kenobi because there’s a—I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be twenty or thirty years.” As for whether or not we could potentially see him play a
Force Ghost in
Episodes 8 or 9, McGregor says he’s not aware of any plans and isn’t sure if that could even work since the Obi Wan in those films would be
Alec Guinness explaining quote, “To play Obi-Wan Kenobi again would be something I would love to do in one of the spinoff movies. If that were to happen in one of their trilogies, I would be up for that, but I don’t know how that would happen. I’m sure some of the Star Wars fans would come up with an idea of how that could happen.” We’re inclined to agree with McGregor on this one, but if anyone can come up with a way to make it work, it’s Star Wars fans, but what do you think? Could you see him appearing as a Force Ghost in
Episode 8 or would you prefer to see him star in a spinoff movie?
