What!? There's a normal day in my life as I'm living on a ship as it travels the world?
Yes there is! Although it can feel very sporadic at times as we are traveling from country to country, there are "typical" days at sea where
I go to class, eat and hangout with friends! In this video I take you through my schedule so you can see what my life is like while living at sea.
First there are no weekends or weekdays. They may still exist but in name only. When traveling with
Semester At Sea there 3 days: A
Days, B days, or
Study Days.
NOTE: These days are determined in a pre-planned schedule that
SAS creates before each voyage in a voyage calendar. I recommend printing it out before getting on the ship so you don't get confused!
My
A day goes like this:
Earlier in the voyage I got up for sunrises, but then I couldn't remember things cause I was so sleep deprived!
7-8am
Wake up/
Get Ready
8-915am
Creative Writing Class
915-1130am Hang-out, do homework, look at the ocean
(yes you can do it for hours!)
1130-130
Lunch
130ish-350ishpm
Work Study
Work Study are students who've gotten "jobs" on the ship. We don't get paid, but we get around $5,
000 reduced in the price to help pay for the voyage. You apply for them before the voyage and are told what to do in orientation and by your boss.
350-505pm
Acting Class
505-530pm Hangout
530-730pm Dinner
800pm
Seminar/Pre-Port
10pm Snack Time
Every evening abroad the ship there is a Seminar which is basically a talk on some topic. Typically they are about the country we are about to visit. Most of the time they're fascinating and fun to watch.
The Seminar's before port are called Pre-Port. The logistical Pre-Port is the day before port and everyone is required to go.
It's basically an assembly and you're told about how to stay safe, how immigration will go etc.
Everything you need to know about the country you're about to go into is gone over in Pre-Port.
Although I didn't always physically go to Pre-Port, I did watch the Pre-Port on our small TV in our room. I don't recommend skipping Pre-Port all together. You'll miss some very important information and be the annoying person who's asking everybody what's going on.
After the Pre-Port I hangout with people or do homework. Lots of people play games and cards and something I don't mention in the video is at 10 there is snack time where you can get some "free", as in it's a part of what you've paid for, food that's usually left over from dinner.
My B Day
Schedule goes like this:
Sleep in! Because seriously I love sleep!
1030am -1050 Wake up
(literally I'd wake up 5 min before class sometimes)
1050-1205
World Mythologies (my global lens)
Global Lens classes are larger classes and are 1 of the 4 classes you have to take on SAS. There is a list on the SAS website of what classes are considered Global Lens'
1205-130 Lunch
130ish-350ish Work Study
350-505
Conservation of
Marine Resources
505-530 Hangout/Do homework
530-730 Dinner
The evenings are the same for both A Days and B Days.
Study Days were my saving glory! These were the days I'd finally get to catch up on sleep and me time. I literally would watch movies all day (ones I had on my external hard drive!) However, I didn't get a lot of these.
On Study Days you have one "class" you must attend which is a smaller portion of your Global Lens class. After that you do whatever you want, which for me was sleep.
Traveling really takes it out of you and even though you don't want to miss anything about the adventure you really need to make sure to get your rest or you won't remember anything.
That was my Day
In My Life aboard a ship as it travels around the world!
