Transnistria: The Secret Country That Most People Don't Know Exists
If you are looking for a travel destination WAY OFF THE BEATEN PATH, Transnistria might be just what you're looking for! Eastern Europe doesn't get more unique than this where a part of Moldova broke off as its own republic after the USSR split up. The have their own government, customs and even their own currency! Even though they might not be recognized by the UN as a singular country, they really do live life by their own rules. It was an incredible adventure to be able to go here and I would highly recommend it to anyone else looking for a rare type of adventure!

A Day In Transnistria
No state in the world recognizes this country. Its passport and currency are not valid anywhere. For Pridnestrovie, better known as Transnistria, it is the all day life since 23 years. Own parliament, military, money and an anthem created a new identity.
Placed right in between Ukraine and Moldova, Transnistria is a frequent guest of regional current affairs. However the media titles are not very welcoming: „black hole“, „a-want-to-be-state“, „the last Soviet Republic“, etc. Monuments dedicated to Lenin and communist symbols still make the headlines, but what is hidden behind the visible facade? How do Transnistrians live and what are their worries? „A Day in Transnistria“ lifts the veil for the lives of ordinary citizens of an unrecognized republic. Their hopes, fears and daily routine ...

Transnistrian Independence Day 2017
One of the most unique events I've seen traveling was the celebration of Independence Day in the unrecognized country of Transnistria!
27 years after declaring independence from the country of Moldova, the people of this Soviet relic celebrated with a show of marching, dancing, singing and basketball-dribbling.
If you're curious about this strange almost-country, make sure you check out my previous video on Transnistria!

48 Hours in Transnistria
I recently had the pleasure to visit Transnistria - this is actually a country despite it only being recognised by 3 similar rogue states. Moldova feels it should be Moldova and Transnistria longs for its Soviet past. This is a video showing some of what I saw while there. I will try my best to answer every question.

Where Time Stands Still: Special Report from Moldova's Breakaway Transnistria
Transnistria - a thin strip of land between Ukraine and the Dniester River in eastern Moldova where the Soviet legacy remains strong today. Since declaring itself an independent in 1990, the region has operated with its own president, parliament, rules and even currency. Not a single U.N. member has acknowledged its independence - even Russia, a large military and financial contributor to the territory. Yet, as Hromadske found out, all is not well. In the quiet city of Tiraspol, it seems the political promises of prosperity, investment, and modernization have past unfounded.

Places That Don't Exist #2 - Trans-Dniester Transnistria
There are almost 200 official countries in the world. But there are dozens more unrecognised nations determined to be independent. Simon Reeve set out to visit several of these lesser-known places.
2 -Trans-Dniester
Simon Reeve travels to Moldova where he goes on a drunken fishing trip with the president, before meeting a village so poor that 32 men there sold their kidneys.
He then crosses over to the breakaway state of Trans-Dniester to find a region where Lenin statues still take pride of place and "independence day" is celebrated with a show of force by thousands of troops.
He also gets arrested for trying to film a secret Soviet base.

Transnistria: The last Soviets - BLATCH
Transnistria is a breakaway republic and a real time machine: Here, 500,000 people still live in the USSR-era. Soviet codes and imagery are an integral part of this micro-nation.
Accompanied by Roman, we met various actors of this "puppet nation", including the President of the Republic, Vadim Krasnosselsky, to portray one of the last separatist region of Europe, lost in a forgotten era.

Their hopes, fears and daily routine are shown in this debut piece, produced by Alisa Bauchina, Simon Erhardt and Martin Franke.

How is the relationship of Moldova and Transnistria with Russia? What happened in Moldova after a change of regime and the cooperation agreement with the EU? Are Moldova and Transnistria depending on Russia and if so, why? A documentary about Moldova, Transnistria and its relationship with Russia.
In this eight-part travel series, the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Moldova seems to stand still. There are still Soviet buildings everywhere. And since the change of regime, the streets have not been serviced. Until 2009, the Communists still had the say. Recently, a pro-European coalition is at the power, signing a cooperation agreement with the EU. Russia was not pleased about it so that no Moldavian wine could be exported anymore. Wine is one of the most important export products in Moldova. Everywhere you go, you can see vineyards.
The two largest wine cellars of the world are in Moldova. In Cricova you can find a tunnel system of 120 kilometers. During the Second World War, Jews were hidden in the wine barrels. Today you can find wine collections that belong to personalities such as Putin, Angela Merkel or John Kerry.
Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. No wonder that many young job seekers are leaving the countryside. The remaining Moldovans have to be satisfied with the money from abroad, even though the pressure from Russia is as big as their dependency. The oil and gas come for example mainly from Russia. Jelle visits the territory of Transnistria, which freed itself from Moldavia after a bloody war in the 1990s and now wants to join Russia.
