MaximsNewsNetwork: U.N.: SOMALIA ERITREA SANCTIONS
MaximsNewsNetwork: United Nations, 23 October 2015, New York- The UN Security Council adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the Somalia-Eritrea Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea (SEMG) for a year and will not lift sanctions on Eritrea for at least another year.
At a U.N. Security Council meeting today (23 October 2015) fourteen member states voted in favour to adopt the resolution with zero votes against, and one abstention. (Venezuela)
Ambassador Girma Asmerom Tesfay, Permanent Representative of Eritrea to the United Nations objected to the resolution's adoption saying, "The Somalian-Eritrean Monitoring Group has concluded that, I quote, 'it has found no evidence of Eritrea's support to Al-Shabaab in Somalia. With regards to the disputes between Eritrea and Djibouti the presidents of the two countries have entrusted the state of Qatar to mediate their disputes.'"
Ambassador Girma Asmerom Tesfay stressed that: "Since the two justifications for the imposition of the unjust sanctions against Eritrea are non-existent the correct logical and legal action should have been for the UN Security Council to immediately and unconditionally lift the unjust sanctions against Eritrea and terminate the mandate of the Somalian Monitoring Group concerning the part of Eritrea. Any other pretext is unacceptable. It is a political agenda."
Ambassador Elmi Ahmed Duale, Permanent Representative of the Somali Republic to the United Nations said: "Today, Somalia has functioning institutions including the board of directors of the Central Bank of Somalia, parliamentary oversight committees of the Somali parliament, the offices of the Accountant General and an independent office of the auditor general as well as capacity support of the financial governance committee whose members are comprised of international financial institutions including the World Bank, IMF, and the African Development Bank."
Also speaking at the U.N. Security Council, the US representative David Pressman said, "We also call upon Eritrea to respond to the Monitoring Group's requests for information and permit the Group to travel to Eritrea. Eritrea's refusal to engage constructively with the Monitoring Group must change before we can take seriously Eritrean calls for these sanctions to be lifted."
US representative David Pressman continued by saying: "Somalis are laying the foundation for a more stable, representative, and inclusive government. The international community and this Council must remain engaged to ensure Somalia and the region realize a more peaceful future and we thank Council members for joining with us in sending that strong message today."

On the 27th of June, 2014, the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) established a Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Eritrea to investigate and officially document the alleged systematic violations of human rights in Eritrea. The COI will collect testimonies from victims, victim’s families, and witnesses in the Diaspora to document their suffering and to allow their stories to be heard in the hopes of obtaining justice for these victims, both alive and deceased. The COI has until June 2015 to collect this information and present its findings to the HRC at its 29th Session.
This video is an interview conducted by Human Rights Concern-Eritrea (HRCE) with Lemma Adhanom who in 1994 was conscripted into 1st round of the so called Eritrea National Service. He was later remobilized and fought in the bloody 1998-2000 border war between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
He reflects on the things he witnessed during the war and after; including extrajudicial execution, torture, arbitrary detention, inhumane treatments and wide spread rape of female conscripts by high ranking officers which continues til this day.
Lemma was imprisoned when he tried to air his opinion and eventually decided to flee Eritrea when his life was threatened.
This is his Story...

DireTube News - Inside the secretive state of Eritrea
Eritrea is considered one of the most repressive and secretive states on earth. The UN says forced labour and detention without trial are common.
There have been no elections in the country since independence in 1993 and President Isaias Afewerki has been in power for almost 22 years.
Political opponents and journalists have been imprisoned for voicing dissent.
BBC News hasn’t been allowed to film in the country for around a decade. But now, my team and I have been allowed in to look at improvements in Eritrea’s healthcare.

#WeSayNO
This is to express our dismay of and strong opposition to the European Union’s current plan to provide a multi-million development package to the repressive Government of Issaias Afewerki of Eritrea.
WHEREAS over the last two decades tens of thousands of Eritreans fled the country escaping enslavement in the name of military service
WHEREAS the Government of Issaias Afewerki has curtailed most freedoms, from movement to expression; from religion to association; from where to live, when to marry and who to worship
WHEREAS the extra-judicial executions, enforced disappearances and incommunicado detentions aimed at silencing all perceived critics continue unabated
WHEREAS the 2007 European Union’s122 Million Euros similar aid package had no impact in either reducing or eliminating the brutalization of the Eritrean people at the hands of the repressive regime
WHEREAS in June of last year, the regime’s brutal treatment of its own people prompted the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) to launch the International Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea
WHEREAS European Union development aid notwithstanding, so long as repression continues in Eritrea, children, youth and women will continue to flee the country and embark on treacherous journeys that claim innumerable lives
We therefore CALL upon the European Union to:
Stop rewarding the brutal dictatorship with new funds and instead redirect funding to nongovernmental humanitarian organizations to provide food, shelter, counseling and transitional assistance to refugees in desperate need of help
State unequivocally its position in support of the Eritrean people in their struggle to usher in a constitutional and accountable Government elected by the people
Demand that the brutalization of the Eritrean people that is at the root of mass migration be halted immediately
Identify and impose travel restrictions on senior members of the repressive regime who visit European capitals to mobilize financial resources from the diaspora
Request the repressive Government of Issaias Afewerki to allow the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) access to Eritrea

This is a list of the "mammal species recorded in Eritrea". These are the mammal species in Eritrea, of which 1 is critically endangered, 2 are endangered, 10 are vulnerable, and 3 are near-threatened.
The following tags are used to highlight each species' conservation status as assessed by the IUCN:
Some species were assessed using an earlier set of criteria. Species assessed using this system have the following instead of Near Threatened and Least Concern categories:
----
The order Tubulidentata consists of a single species, the Aardvark. Tubulidentata are characterised by their teeth which lack a pulp cavity and form thin tubes which are continuously worn down and replaced.
----
The hyraxes are any of four species of fairly small, thickset, herbivorous mammals in the order Hyracoidea. About the size of a domestic cat they are well-furred, with rounded bodies and a stmpy tail. They are native to Africa and the Middle East.
----
The elephants comprise three living species and are the largest living land animals.
----
Sirenia is an order of fully aquatic, herbivorous mammals that inhabit rivers, estuaries, coastal marine waters, swamps, and marine wetlands. All four species are endangered.
----
The order Primates contains humans and their closest relatives: lemurs, lorisoids, tarsiers, monkeys, and apes.
----
Rodents make up the largest order of mammals, with over 40 percent of mammalian species. They have two incisors in the upper and lower jaw which grow continually and must be keep short by gnawing. Most rodents are small though the capybara can weigh up to 45 kg .
