It consists of two brown dwarfs, A and B, which are located six light-years away in the constellation of Vela. Brightness fluctuations were recently recorded of Luhman 16B, using ESO_s Very Large Telescope (VLT). This data was used to create a map of the brown dwarf_s bright and dark surface features - thought to be atmospheric phenomenon such as clouds or weather patterns. The atmospheres of brown dwarfs are thought to be similar to those of hot gas giant exoplanets, so by studying comparatively easy-to-observe brown dwarfs, astronomers can also learn more about the atmospheres of young giant planets.
