http://www.democracynow.org - As the protests continue in Ferguson, Missouri, over the shooting of Michael Brown, we turn now to two well-known voices who have come to Ferguson to show their support. Talib Kweli is a world-renowned hip-hop artist and activist from New York City. He first broke out as one half of the duo Black Star, along with the rapper and actor Mos Def. Black Star helped define the underground, conscious hip-hop movement that re-emerged in the late 1990s. Since then he has released many critically acclaimed albums and used his platform to champion political causes, including police brutality and the prison-industrial complex.
Kweli traveled to Ferguson with Rosa Clemente, a longtime activist, journalist, scholar, and former director of the Hip-Hop Caucus. In 2008, Clemente made history as part of the first all-women-of-color presidential ticket in U.S. history, running as the Green Party’s vice presidential nominee, along with former Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney, who ran for president.
Kweli and Clemente joined the protests in Ferguson just before a massive march planned for Saturday in their hometown of New York City. Thousands are expected to rally on Staten Island for justice in the case of Eric Garner, the African-American man who died in a police chokehold last month.
Democracy Now! producer Aaron Maté caught up with Kweli and Clemente this week at Ferguson’s Greater St. Mark Family Church. The church has been used as a meeting point and as a safe haven for protesters hit by tear gas.

Rosa Alicia Clemente (born April 18, 1972) is a United States community organizer, independent journalist and hip-hop activist. She was the vice presidential running mate of 2008 Green Party Presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney in the 2008 U.S. Presidential election.
Clemente was born and raised in South Bronx, New York. She is a graduate of the University of Albany and Cornell University. Clemente has been delivering workshops, presentations and commentary for over ten years.
Clemente's academic work has focused on research of national liberation struggles within the United States, with a specific focus on the Young Lords Party and the Black Liberation Army. While a student at SUNY Albany, she was President of the Albany State University Black Alliance (ASUBA) and Director of Multicultural Affairs for the Student Association. At Cornell she was a founding member of La Voz Boriken, a social/political organization dedicated to supporting Puerto Rican political prisoners and the independence of Puerto Rico.

Martin Luther (help·info) (10 November 1483 – 18 February 1546) was a German monk, priest, professor of theology and iconic figure of the Protestant Reformation. He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. He confronted indulgence salesman Johann Tetzel with his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517. His refusal to retract all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Emperor.
Luther taught that salvation is not earned by good deeds but received only as a free gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ as redeemer from sin. His theology challenged the authority of the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge and opposed sacerdotalism by considering all baptized Christians to be a holy priesthood. Those who identify with Luther's teachings are called Lutherans.

Talib Kweli is a world-renowned hip-hop artist and activist from New York City. He first broke out as one half of the duo Black Star, along with the rapper and actor Mos Def. Black Star helped define the underground, conscious hip-hop movement that re-emerged in the late 1990s. Since then he has released many critically acclaimed albums and used his platform to champion political causes, including police brutality and the prison-industrial complex.
Kweli traveled to Ferguson with Rosa Clemente, a longtime activist, journalist, scholar, and former director of the Hip-Hop Caucus. In 2008, Clemente made history as part of the first all-women-of-color presidential ticket in U.S. history, running as the Green Party’s vice presidential nominee, along with former Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney, who ran for president.
Kweli and Clemente joined the protests in Ferguson just before a massive march planned for Saturday in their hometown of New York City. Thousands are expected to rally on Staten Island for justice in the case of Eric Garner, the African-American man who died in a police chokehold last month.
Democracy Now! producer Aaron Maté caught up with Kweli and Clemente this week at Ferguson’s Greater St. Mark Family Church. The church has been used as a meeting point and as a safe haven for protesters hit by tear gas.

Before the event, Iraq Veterans Against the War led a march towards the Pepsi Center where the Democrats were holding their convention. This is footage from that day. More to come soon. In commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of Roberto Clemente Community Academy, RCCA will host a weekend of events that celebrate the rich history and legacy of Roberto Clemente the man, Roberto Clemente Community Academy’s significant and historical place within the Humboldt Park community, and the very promising future of our school within an educational pedagogical framework. Our school was founded on struggle as many might remember, but the belief in and advocacy for our young people has always been at the center of that struggle. There is and always has been a vision of equity and access that will be realized through the education of our youth. Over the past 40 years, RCCA has had its highs and lows, but has evolved into one of the premier educational institutions in Chicago with the recent naming of Clemente as a neighborhood Wall to Wall International Baccalaureate Candidate school.
