Dave Pegg (born 2 November 1947) is an English multi-instrumentalist and record producer, arguably most visible as a bass guitarist. He is the longest-serving member of the pre-eminent electric folk band Fairport Convention and has been bassist with a number of important folk and rock groups including The Ian Campbell Folk Group and Jethro Tull. He has appeared on some of the most significant albums of his era, as well as undertaking solo projects. His style of playing bass has been particularly influential in electric folk music.
David Pegg was born on 2 November 1947, at Acocks Green, Birmingham, England. He began to learn guitar when 14 or 15, inspired by The Shadows, and played in a school band at Yardley Grammar school.
After leaving school he worked as an insurance clerk for about a year while playing in a part-time bands the Crawdaddys and The Roy Everett Blues Band, who supported several performers from the flourishing Birmingham beat scene of the time, including the Spencer Davis Group and The Moody Blues. In 1966 he auditioned for The Uglys, featuring Steve Gibbons and was beaten to the position by friend and guitarist Roger Hill, but was offered the job of bass guitarist and switched instruments.
Fairport Convention are an English folk rock and electric folk band. Formed in 1967, they are widely regarded as a key group in the English folk rock movement.
Their seminal album Liege & Lief is considered to have launched the electric folk or English folk rock movement, which provided a distinctively English identity to rock music and helped awaken much wider interest in traditional music in general. The large number of personnel who have been part of the band are among the most highly regarded and influential musicians of their era and have gone on to participate in a large number of significant bands, or enjoyed important solo careers.
Since 1979, they have hosted the Cropredy Festival, which is the largest such annual event in England. Individually and collectively the members of Fairport Convention have received numerous awards recognizing their contribution to music and culture. As of 2016, they continue to record and tour.
Bassist Ashley Hutchings met guitarist Simon Nicol in North London in 1966 when they both played in the Ethnic Shuffle Orchestra. They rehearsed on the floor above Nicol's father's medical practice in a house called "Fairport" on Fortis Green in Muswell Hill, North London (the same street on which Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks grew up), which lent its name to the group they formed together as Fairport Convention in 1967 with Richard Thompson on guitar and Shaun Frater on drums. After their first performance at St Michael's Church Hall in Golders Green, North West London on 27 May 1967, they had their first of many line-up changes as one member of the audience, drummer Martin Lamble, convinced the band that he could do a better job than Frater and replaced him. They soon added a female singer, Judy Dyble, which gave them a distinctive sound among the many London bands of the period.
Dirty Linen was a bi-monthly magazine of folk and world music based in Baltimore, Maryland. The magazine ceased publication in the spring of 2010. The magazine offered extensive reviews of folk music recordings, videos, books, and concerts as well as in depth profiles of musical artists and venues. They also maintained a schedule of concerts and festivals of folk music performances in North America in their "gig guide" which was available within the magazine or through their web site. Other features included, "The Horse Trader" classified ads, and a "Wireless" discussion of whats on the air waves.
Dirty Linen originated in 1983 as a publication titled Fairport Fanatics, a fan magazine for the British band Fairport Convention created by T.J. McGrath of Fairfield, Connecticut. In 1987 Paul Hartman took over as editor and publisher, renamed the magazine Dirty Linen and expanded its scope to cover genres of rooted music from many countries and cultures.
Based in Baltimore, Maryland, the magazine grew with direction from Hartman and his wife, Susan (who also served as co-editor of the magazine for many years). The photocopied fanzine became a glossy color publication in the early 1990s.Dirty Linen began international distribution and gained sales in North American chains such as Borders Books & Music, Barnes & Noble, and Chapters.
Jethro Tull may refer to:
David Pegg (20 September 1935 – 6 February 1958) was an English footballer and one of the eight Manchester United players who lost their lives in the Munich air disaster on 6 February 1958.
He was born in Highfields, Doncaster, in September 1935, one of three children born to miner William Pegg and his wife Jessie. His father also played amateur football to a high standard during the 1930s, winning a number of trophies with local football teams.
He signed for United on leaving school in 1950 and made his first team debut in the Football League First Division against Middlesbrough on 6 December 1952, aged 17.
He was the club's first-choice outside left until the final few months before the disaster (when he was displaced by Albert Scanlon) and had collected two League Championship winner's medals in the two seasons leading up to the Munich air disaster. He also helped them reach the European Cup semi-finals twice. His performance against Real Madrid in the 1956-57 semi-finals reportedly inspired the Spanish giants to sign a new left-back specifically to combat Pegg's talents in the future, although his death less than a year later meant that he never played against them again.

1976-03-23 While Gottle o' Geer is often considered to be a "forgotten" (intentionally or not) Fairport recording, there was a real band from that recording that played live. The lineup that made the Gottle recording performed on the Rockpalast TV show for its only time. Prior to receiving this DVD, I had only seen (3) of these songs on a compilation DVD that has been around. I was told that this particular concert was not show in its entirety on TV. However, the trader had a contact at WDR who managed to find this. I asked this trader if he might get the Steeleye Span performance from the previous year, but that was not felt to be likely. So, everybody get busy on that that one! The tracks on this DVD are: 1. Introduction (English translation welcome) 2. come and Get It 3. The...
