At the recent Canadian Investor Conference, held in Vancouver on May 31 and June 1, the Investing News Network (INN) had the chance to chat with Brian Robertson, president and CEO of Source Exploration (TSXV:SOP), about the company's Las Minas project and what it is like working in Mexico.
Source has been busy drilling various targets at the project, and right before the conference the company saw some encouraging results. Specifically, drilling at the Nopaltepec target revealed a new highly mineralized zone.
"I think the Nopaltepec number-one discovery hole is a very exciting hole, and I say that for a number of reasons. What we have is a hole that intersected several zones of mineralization, the highest grade being 5.74 g/t gold equivalent over 17 meters. Within that 17 meters was a 1-meter intersection grading 35 g/t gold equivalent, so it’s a very exciting intersection," Robertson explained. "And the other part of it is the actual location of that hole and how it is related to other drilling that we have done at Las Minas. It’s approximately 250 meters west of the Santa Cruz high-grade zone."
Source also did some step-out drilling at Las Minas, further expanding the down-dip and strike extensions within the El Dorado/Juan Bran zone. Robertson said that all of this drilling is going towards a NI 43-101 resource estimate for the property, which should be finished by the end of this year.
INN was also curious about what it is like working in that region of Mexico, and Robertson cited a few reasons why it has been very beneficial to the company.
"First of all, a real plus factor for working in that region is the geology. It has tremendous geology. Mexico has tremendous geology. The other thing is that we can drill year round at Las Minas. We are not limited with short seasons, it has excellent infrastructure, there is a hydroelectric power plant at the site and the area is a very safe area. So we feel that we have got a significant discovery in an excellent location."
Finally, INN asked how Robertson feels about the gold price and what makes him confident that Source can succeed in today's lower price environment.
"[The] gold price in my experience is always very cyclical, and I’ve gone through various cycles on the gold price. My feeling right now is we are at a bottom in the gold price and it will change ... quite dramatically, and it will change before people ever expect it to," Robertson explained. "What we have at Source is a company that has been very successful in a number of areas. We have raised over $2 million in a very difficult junior resource market, we have drilled 4,000 meters, we have excellent people within the company and it is those companies with those attributes that will survive."

Here are the basic points covered in the video:
1. Economic geology is complex. This video is just to give you a taste, and to cover some of the key elements. Studying geology in depth and having a mastery of the subject is what can really help investors pick the big winners in this area. It's worth noting that many big investment firms that focus on single stock selection in the mining space employ geologists.
2. Be skeptical. Everyone says they have a great mine with the most valuable stuff in the world that can be extracted at very low prices. Most of them do not. When doing number crunching in valuing mines, conservative estimates can help. Accordingly, it's worth remembering that trying to pick explorers, while that's where the big money is, is a tough game. Most fail. Those that already have production established, earnings to prove it, and the possibility of issuing dividends are the much safer bet, especially for the casual investor/trader.
3. Check the NI 43-101. The NI 43-101 is a report issued by mining companies listed on Canadian exchanges (the vast majority of mining firms) that is an attempt at quantifying the amount of minerals the mining company has access to for their given mines. I recommend focusing on conservative numbers in the report, as it remains to be seen if the geologist who conducted the report got it correct and what the final price of extraction ends up being.
4. Cost Per Ounce. In investor presentations, many mining firms will state their cost per ounce. The simple formula for assessing the value of a mine is
(market price per ounce of mineral - cost per ounce) * number of ounces
When you have the NI 43-101 and the cost per ounce, you can do some number crunching to give you an idea of what the company's potential profit is. Then you can compare this with its market capitalization to get an idea of whether it is undervalued or not, as well as its earning potential based on how you think the mineral it mines will fare in the future.
Related to cost per ounce is the quality of the ore in the mine. This is most simply observed by looking at what the grams per ton the company is reporting. Lower grams per ton means it will take moving around a lot of rocks to get the minerals, which means a higher cost of production. Conversely, higher grams per ton means cost of production are likely lower. These days, it is common to see 1 gram per ton or less with respect to gold, although there are of course exceptions that can yield much more.
5. History. Mines with minerals that are most easily extracted tend to form around fault lines. This is one of the reasons why the same geographic regions tend to continually yield worthwhile mines. In the United States, for instance, Nevada, Colorado, and California have historically been mineral-rich regions -- and so many companies today tend to focus on those regions as well. Canada, of course, has built much of its economy on mineral extraction. In addition to having favorable mines, these regions are also accustomed to dealing with the mining industry and are often inclined to view it as an economic boon and capable of dealing with the myriad of permitting and environmental issues mining brings.

The Orenada property is located on the western end of the Cadillac Break property package, approximately 4 km south east of the town of Val d'Or, QC. The property straddles the Cadillac Tectonic Zone (CTZ) and hosts two surface vein-type gold deposits, Orenada Zone 2 and Orenada Zone 4, within this shear zone. In the Fall of 2009, Alexandria completed a NI 43-101 compliant resource estimate on Orenada Zone 2 and 4 that identified Measured and Indicated resources of 446,000 ounces of gold and an Inferred resource of 302,000 ounces of gold.

Sunridge Gold Corp. is currently developing the copper-zinc-gold Asmara project in Eritrea, East Africa. Successful exploration has defined six NI 43-101 deposits to date. A feasibility study completed in 2013 on the four advanced projects at the Asmara project demonstrated very strong economics, including an NPV (10%) of $692M and IRR of 34%. On October 19, 2015, Sunridge announced that the Eritrean Ministry of Energy and Mines had awarded three mining licenses to the Asmara Mining Share Company ("AMSC"), a joint-venture company of which Sunridge owns 60% and the Eritrean National Mining Corporation owns 40%. The company will begin Phase 1a Direct Shipping Ore mining (averaging 16% copper) in 2016, which will provide an injection of cash into the project. Once full production is achieved, the operation will average 65 Mlb copper and 184 Mlb zinc/year, with significant gold and silver credits. Exploration potential remains on the project, including two defined “Pipeline Deposits” and numerous high-priority targets. National Instrument 43-101 (the "NI 43-101" or the "NI") is a national instrument for the Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects within Canada. The Instrument is a codified set of rules and guidelines for reporting and displaying information related to mineral properties owned by, or explored by, companies which report these results on stock exchanges within Canada. This includes foreign-owned mining entities who trade on stock exchanges overseen by the Canadian Securities Administrators, even if they only trade on Over The Counter (OTC) derivatives or other instrumented securities.

The Orenada property is located on the western end of the Cadillac Break property package, approximately 4 km south east of the town of Val d'Or, QC. The property straddles the Cadillac Tectonic Zone (CTZ) and hosts two surface vein-type gold deposits, Orenada Zone 2 and Orenada Zone 4, within this shear zone. At the recent Canadian Investor Conference, held in Vancouver on May 31 and June 1, the Investing News Network (INN) had the chance to chat with Brian Robertson, president and CEO of Source Exploration (TSXV:SOP), about the company's Las Minas project and what it is like working in Mexico.
Source has been busy drilling various targets at the project, and right before the conference the company saw some encouraging results. Specifically, drilling at the Nopaltepec target revealed a new highly mineralized zone.
"I think the Nopaltepec number-one discovery hole is a very exciting hole, and I say that for a number of reasons. What we have is a hole that intersected several zones of mineralization, the highest grade being 5.74 g/t gold equivalent over 17 meters. Within that 17 meters was a 1-meter intersection grading 35 g/t gold equivalent, so it’s a very exciting intersection," Robertson explained. "And the other part of it is the actual location of that hole and how it is related to other drilling that we have done at Las Minas. It’s approximately 250 meters west of the Santa Cruz high-grade zone."
Source also did some step-out drilling at Las Minas, further expanding the down-dip and strike extensions within the El Dorado/Juan Bran zone. Robertson said that all of this drilling is going towards a NI 43-101 resource estimate for the property, which should be finished by the end of this year.
INN was also curious about what it is like working in that region of Mexico, and Robertson cited a few reasons why it has been very beneficial to the company.
"First of all, a real plus factor for working in that region is the geology. It has tremendous geology. Mexico has tremendous geology. The other thing is that we can drill year round at Las Minas. We are not limited with short seasons, it has excellent infrastructure, there is a hydroelectric power plant at the site and the area is a very safe area. So we feel that we have got a significant discovery in an excellent location."
Finally, INN asked how Robertson feels about the gold price and what makes him confident that Source can succeed in today's lower price environment.
"[The] gold price in my experience is always very cyclical, and I’ve gone through various cycles on the gold price. My feeling right now is we are at a bottom in the gold price and it will change ... quite dramatically, and it will change before people ever expect it to," Robertson explained. "What we have at Source is a company that has been very successful in a number of areas. We have raised over $2 million in a very difficult junior resource market, we have drilled 4,000 meters, we have excellent people within the company and it is those companies with those attributes that will survive."

It's worth noting that many big investment firms that focus on single stock selection in the mining space employ geologists.
2. Be skeptical. Everyone says they have a great mine with the most valuable stuff in the world that can be extracted at very low prices. Most of them do not. When doing number crunching in valuing mines, conservative estimates can help. Accordingly, it's worth remembering that trying to pick explorers, while that's where the big money is, is a tough game. Most fail. Those that already have production established, earnings to prove it, and the possibility of issuing dividends are the much safer bet, especially for the casual investor/trader.
3. Check the NI 43-101. The NI 43-101 is a report issued by mining companies listed on Canadian exchanges (the vast majority of mining firms) that is an attempt at quantifying the amount of minerals the mining company has access to for their given mines. I recommend focusing on conservative numbers in the report, as it remains to be seen if the geologist who conducted the report got it correct and what the final price of extraction ends up being.
4. Cost Per Ounce. In investor presentations, many mining firms will state their cost per ounce. The simple formula for assessing the value of a mine is
(market price per ounce of mineral - cost per ounce) * number of ounces
When you have the NI 43-101 and the cost per ounce, you can do some number crunching to give you an idea of what the company's potential profit is. Then you can compare this with its market capitalization to get an idea of whether it is undervalued or not, as well as its earning potential based on how you think the mineral it mines will fare in the future.
Related to cost per ounce is the quality of the ore in the mine. This is most simply observed by looking at what the grams per ton the company is reporting. Lower grams per ton means it will take moving around a lot of rocks to get the minerals, which means a higher cost of production. Conversely, higher grams per ton means cost of production are likely lower. These days, it is common to see 1 gram per ton or less with respect to gold, although there are of course exceptions that can yield much more.
5. History. Mines with minerals that are most easily extracted tend to form around fault lines. This is one of the reasons why the same geographic regions tend to continually yield worthwhile mines. In the United States, for instance, Nevada, Colorado, and California have historically been mineral-rich regions -- and so many companies today tend to focus on those regions as well. Canada, of course, has built much of its economy on mineral extraction. In addition to having favorable mines, these regions are also accustomed to dealing with the mining industry and are often inclined to view it as an economic boon and capable of dealing with the myriad of permitting and environmental issues mining brings.

Sunridge Gold Corp. is currently developing the copper-zinc-gold Asmara project in Eritrea, East Africa. Successful exploration has defined six NI 43-101 deposits to date. A feasibility study completed in 2013 on the four advanced projects at the Asmara project demonstrated very strong economics, including an NPV (10%) of $692M and IRR of 34%. On October 19, 2015, Sunridge announced that the Eritrean Ministry of Energy and Mines had awarded three mining licenses to the Asmara Mining Share Company ("AMSC"), a joint-venture company of which Sunridge owns 60% and the Eritrean National Mining Corporation owns 40%. The company will begin Phase 1a Direct Shipping Ore mining (averaging 16% copper) in 2016, which will provide an injection of cash into the project. Once full production is achieved, the operation will average 65 Mlb copper and 184 Mlb zinc/year, with significant gold and silver credits. Exploration potential remains on the project, including two defined “Pipeline Deposits” and numerous high-priority targets. Focus Graphite (CVE:FMS) President Don Baxter presented live to an audience of sophisticated investors and live webcast at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Vancouver on January 20th 2014.
Mr Baxter holds a degree in Mining Engineering from Queen's University, is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Qualified Person under NI 43-101. Mr. Baxter served as President of Northern Graphite Corporation between February 2, 2011 and July 8, 2013 and was responsible for all technical aspects relating to the Bissett Creek graphite project including the bankable feasibility study, metallurgical test work and environmental and mine permitting. He also served as Mine Superintendent at the Kearney Graphite mine when it operated in the 1990s. Mr. Baxter served as a Director of Mining at Ontario Graphite Ltd., has worked for Inco and Noranda Minerals as well as numerous consulting projects for base and precious metals.
