Caledonian MacBrayne (Scottish Gaelic: Caledonian Mac a' Bhriuthainn), usually shortened to Calmac, is the major operator of passenger and vehicle ferries, and ferry services, between the mainland of Scotland and 22 of the major islands on Scotland's west coast. Since 2006 the company's official name has been CalMac Ferries Ltd although it still operates as Caledonian MacBrayne. In 2006 it also became a subsidiary of holding company David MacBrayne Ltd, which is owned by the Scottish Government.
MacBrayne's, initially known as David Hutcheson & Co., began in 1851 as a private steamship operator when G. and J. Burns, operators of the largest of the Clyde fleets, decided to concentrate on coastal and transatlantic services and handed control of their river and Highland steamers to a new company in which Hutcheson, their manager of these services, became senior partner. Their main route went from Glasgow down the Firth of Clyde through the Crinan Canal to Oban and Fort William, and on through the Caledonian Canal to Inverness. David Hutcheson was married to Margaret Dawson who was born at her parents home 'Bonnytoun House' in Linlithgow, Scotland. She was the sister of Adam Dawson who owned the St. Magdalene Whisky Distillery in Linlithgow and sister to James Dawson who were also born at 'Bonnytoun House'. In 2011 Glasgow historian Robert Pool added over 200 letters and documents to his collection relating to David Hutcheson and the Dawson family.

Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas, pronounced [ʎɔː.əs̪], also Isle of Lewis) is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides (an archipelago) of Scotland. The total area of Lewis is 683 square miles (1,770 km2).
Lewis is, in general, the lower lying part of the island, with the other part, Harris, being more mountainous. The flatter, more fertile land means Lewis contains the largest settlement, Stornoway, and three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles. Beyond human habitation, the island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna, such as the golden eagle, red deer and seals and are recognised in a number of conservation areas.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.
West Coast may refer to:
Loch Seaforth (Scottish Gaelic: Loch Shiphoirt) is sea loch in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It forms the boundary between Lewis and Harris and was the boundary between the traditional counties of Ross and Cromarty and Inverness-shire.
MV Loch Seaforth is also the name of two Western Isles ships. The 1947 MacBrayne mailboat which linked Stornoway with Mallaig and Kyle of Lochalsh from 1947 until 1972. On 22 March 1973 she ran aground on Cleit Rock in the Sound of Gunna (between Tiree and Coll) and was subsequently scrapped. The name has been given to the new Calmac car ferry which entered service on the Ullapool to Stornoway crossing in 2015.

Five CalMac ferries in one day, taking in the islands of Bute and Arran on a circular motorcycle tour. Motorcycling in Scotland doesn't get much better than this. Dougal the Dog rides the motorbike too, as we take in Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries from Claonaig to Lochranza, Brodick to Ardrossan, Wemyss Bay to Rothesay, Rhubodach to Colintraive, and from Portavadie to Tarbert Loch Fyne. On the Isle of Arran we stop for lunch at the Dog-Friendly cafe, the Fiddlers. All this on a Triumph Thruxton Motorcycle. If you're doing a tour of Scotland, this makes for an ideal daytrip - or you can take a little longer and spend more time on the islands.
