Bell Laboratories, which thrived from the 1920s to the 1980s, was the most innovative and productive institution of the twentieth century. Long before America's brightest scientific minds began migrating west to Silicon Valley, they flocked to this sylvan campus in the New Jersey suburbs built and funded by AT&T;. At its peak, Bell Labs employed nearly fifteen thousand people, twelve hundred of whom had PhDs. Thirteen would go on to win Nobel prizes. It was a citadel of science and scholarship as well as a hotbed of creative thinking. It was, in effect, a factory of ideas whose workings have remained largely hidden until now.
New York Times Magazine writer Jon Gertner unveils the unique magic of Bell Labs through the eyes and actions of its scientists. These ingenious, often eccentric men would become revolutionaries, and sometimes legends, whether for inventing radio astronomy in their spare time (and on the company's dime), riding unicycles through the corridors, or pioneering the principles that propel today's technology. In these pages, we learn how radar came to be, and lasers, transistors, satellites, mobile phones, and much more.
Even more important, Gertner reveals the forces that set off this explosion of creativity. Bell Labs combined the best aspects of the academic and corporate worlds, hiring the brightest and usually the youngest minds, creating a culture and even an architecture that forced employees in different fields to work together, in virtually complete intellectual freedom, with little pressure to create moneymaking innovations. In Gertner's portrait, we come to understand why both researchers and business leaders look to Bell Labs as a model and long to incorporate its magic into their own work.

In the late 1960s, Bell Laboratories computer scientists Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson started work on a project that was inspired by an operating system called Multics, a joint project of MIT, GE, and Bell Labs. The host and narrator of this film, Victor Vyssotsky, also had worked on the Multics project. Ritchie and Thompson, recognizing some of the problems with the Multics OS, set out to create a more useful, flexible, and portable system for programmers to work with.
What's fascinating about the growth of UNIX is the long amount of time that it was given to develop, almost organically, and based on the needs of the users and programmers. The first installation of the program was done as late as 1972 (on a NY Telephone branch computer). It was in conjunction with the refinement of the C programming language, principally designed by Dennis Ritchie.
Because the Bell System had limitations placed by the government that prevented them from selling software, UNIX was made available under license to universities and the government. This helped further its development, as well as making it a more "open" system.
This film "The UNIX System: Making Computers More Productive", is one of two that Bell Labs made in 1982 about UNIX's significance, impact and usability. Even 10 years after its first installation, it's still an introduction to the system. The other film, "The UNIX System: Making Computers Easier to Use", is roughly the same, only a little shorter. The former film was geared towards software developers and computer science students, the latter towards programmers specifically.
The film contains interviews with primary developers Ritchie, Thompson, Brian Kernighan, and many others.
While widespread use of UNIX has waned, most modern operating systems have at least a conceptual foundation in UNIX.

On an elementary conceptual level, this film reflects the multifaceted scientific hyperthinking that was typical of a Bell Labs approach. Host Dr. J.N. Shive's presence as a lecturer is excellent - it's understandable by a layperson even when he branches into equations, because he uses copious amounts of real-world examples to bolster the material.
Shive's role at Bell Labs was more than just a great lecturer: he worked on early transistor technology, inventing the phototransistor in 1950, and the machine he uses in the film is his invention, now called the Shive Wave Machine in college classrooms.

Standing waves and resonance
Energy loss by impedance mismatching

This video was made to observe the 20th anniversary of the opening of Bell Laboratories’ complex in Holmdel, New Jersey. The famed research center opened in 1962, 473 acres designed to be home to a workforce of more than 6,000 workers, including many of the finest scientific minds of the era.
Prominently featured at the complex was an enormous central building, designed by famed architect Eero Saarinen, whose firm also built such notable structures as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the TWA Flight Center at JFK International Airport. The Holmdel building became an instant celebrity in the architectural world, with its vast façade of reflective glass and its nearly quarter-mile long atrium.
Prior to the 1962 opening, the site had long been used by Bell Labs as a less formal location for research. It was on those grounds that Karl Guthe Jansky paved the way to radio astronomy with his 1932 discoveries. The decision to build a significant research center in that location moved Bell Laboratories decisively further down the path started by Jansky, emphasizing a dedication to breaking new ground in science and technology. Holmdel would prove to be a major research center in the Unites States through the coming decades. It won the award “Laboratory of the Year” in 1967.
Holmdel functioned as a laboratory for 44 years, finally closing in 2006. After years of discussion and debate, the complex is currently being redeveloped for both commercial and residential use, keeping the landmark Saarinen building preserved.
This video, in addition to giving a clear, brief history of Bell Labs and the Holmdel complex, also provides good insight into the life of the Bell employee, not just in the work place but at social gatherings and in community outreach. While this video is perhaps more an elaborate slide show than a formal documentary film, the images and history told here capture the sprit and excitement of an era when breakthroughs in science and technology emanated from a complex located in a small Central New Jersey town.

In the late 1940s, Bell Laboratories scientists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley invented the transistor, the first solid-state amplifier or switch, and in doing so laid the foundation for all modern electronics and circuitry. The three shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 for the achievement. It may be the most important invention of the 20th century.
This 1965 film shows footage of them reunited/recreating their 1940s lab time to show how it was done, but in real life they had parted. Bardeen had left the labs in 1951 for the U. of IL; Shockley in 1956 to run a semiconductor company in California (laying the groundwork for Silicon Valley), and Brattain retired in 1967 to Whitman College.

Bell Laboratories (also known as Bell Labs and formerly known as AT&T Bell Laboratories and Bell Telephone Laboratories) is the research and development subsidiary of the French-owned Alcatel-Lucent and previously of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T), half-owned through its Western Electric manufacturing subsidiary.
Bell Laboratories operates its headquarters at Murray Hill, New Jersey, United States, and has research and development facilities throughout the world.
The Alexander Graham Bell Laboratory, also variously known as the Volta Bureau, the Bell Carriage House, the Bell Laboratory and the Volta Laboratory, was created in Washington, D.C. by Alexander Graham Bell.
In 1880, the French government awarded Bell the Volta Prize of 50,000 francs (approximately US$10,000 at that time, about $250,000 in current dollars) for the invention of the telephone, which he used to found the Volta Laboratory, along with Sumner Tainter and Bell's cousin Chichester Bell. His research laboratory focused on the analysis, recording and transmission of sound. Bell used his considerable profits from the laboratory for further research and education to permit the "[increased] diffusion of knowledge relating to the deaf".

See more from the AT&T; Archives at http://techchannel.att.com/archives The year was 1973, and the computer operating system UNIX, invented at Bell Labs by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, had just morphed into its third iteration or improvement. The first version been released within the company 2 years before, and at this point there were machines running UNIX at 16 computer centers within the Bell System. These were primarily at Bell Labs locations — Whippany, NJ; Columbus, OH; Indian Hill, IL; and of course Murray Hill, NJ and Holmdel, NJ — among others. This film, made as a new employee's orientation to the Holmdel location's center, is a rare glimpse into the operations and procedures of an early 1970s research-oriented computing center. UNIX evolved out of necessity at Bell Labs. The system's creators were looking for better ways to integrate a shared computer environment. (Read Ritchie's time-sharing system reminiscences) At this point, computers in the Bell System weren't just relegated to computer science or the development of computer language. Holmdel 20th Anniversary, a history of the legendary Bell Labs facility designed by Eero Saarinen
This video was made to observe the 20th anniversary of the opening of Bell Laboratories’ complex in Holmdel, New Jersey. The famed research center opened in 1962, 473 acres designed to be home to a workforce of more than 6,000 workers, including many of the finest scientific minds of the era. Prominently featured at the complex was an enormous central building, designed by famed architect Eero Saarinen, whose firm also built such notable structures as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the TWA Flight Center at JFK International Airport. The Voder - Homer Dudley (Bell Labs) 1939
The Voder by Homer Dudley (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey) was the first device that could generate continuous human speech electronically. The flowing composition of the many speech sounds had to be done manually in realtime on a special keyboard shown in this video. In 1939, Alden P. Armagnac wrote in "Popular Science" about this speaking device: "He hasn't any mouth, lungs, or larynx—but he talks a blue streak. His name is Pedro the Voder, and you may see him in action at the New York and San Francisco world's fairs. In the late 1960s, Bell Laboratories computer scientists Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson started work on a project that was inspired by an operating system called Multics, a joint project of MIT, GE, and Bell Labs. Ritchie and Thompson, recognizing some of the problems with the Multics OS, set out to create a more useful, flexible, and portable system for programmers to work with.
What's fascinating about the growth of UNIX is the long amount of time that it was given to develop, almost organically, and based on the needs of the users and programmers. The first installation of the program was done as late as 1972 (on a NY Telephone branch computer). It was in conjunction with the refinement of the C programming language, principally designed by Dennis Ritchie.
Because the Bell System had limitations placed by the government that prevented them from selling software, UNIX was made available under license to universities and the government. This helped further its development, as well as making it a more "open" system.
This film "The UNIX System: Making Computers More Productive", is one of two that Bell Labs made in 1982 about UNIX's significance, impact and usability. Even 10 years after its first installation, it's still an introduction to the system. The other film, "The UNIX System: Making Computers Easier to Use", is roughly the same, only a little shorter. The former film was geared towards software developers and computer science students, the latter towards programmers specifically.
The film contains interviews with primary developers Ritchie, Thompson, Brian Kernighan, and many others.
While widespread use of UNIX has waned, most modern operating systems have at least a conceptual foundation in UNIX.

Ritchie and Thompson, recognizing some of the problems with the Multics OS, set out to create a more useful, flexible, and portable system for programmers to work with.
What's fascinating about the growth of UNIX is the long amount of time that it was given to develop, almost organically, and based on the needs of the users and programmers. The first installation of the program was done as late as 1972 (on a NY Telephone branch computer). It was in conjunction with the refinement of the C programming language, principally designed by Dennis Ritchie.
Because the Bell System had limitations placed by the government that prevented them from selling software, UNIX was made available under license to universities and the government. This helped further its development, as well as making it a more "open" system.
This film "The UNIX System: Making Computers More Productive", is one of two that Bell Labs made in 1982 about UNIX's significance, impact and usability. Even 10 years after its first installation, it's still an introduction to the system. The other film, "The UNIX System: Making Computers Easier to Use", is roughly the same, only a little shorter. The former film was geared towards software developers and computer science students, the latter towards programmers specifically.
The film contains interviews with primary developers Ritchie, Thompson, Brian Kernighan, and many others.
While widespread use of UNIX has waned, most modern operating systems have at least a conceptual foundation in UNIX.

Prominently featured at the complex was an enormous central building, designed by famed architect Eero Saarinen, whose firm also built such notable structures as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the TWA Flight Center at JFK International Airport. The Holmdel building became an instant celebrity in the architectural world, with its vast façade of reflective glass and its nearly quarter-mile long atrium.
Prior to the 1962 opening, the site had long been used by Bell Labs as a less formal location for research. It was on those grounds that Karl Guthe Jansky paved the way to radio astronomy with his 1932 discoveries. The decision to build a significant research center in that location moved Bell Laboratories decisively further down the path started by Jansky, emphasizing a dedication to breaking new ground in science and technology. Holmdel would prove to be a major research center in the Unites States through the coming decades. It won the award “Laboratory of the Year” in 1967.
Holmdel functioned as a laboratory for 44 years, finally closing in 2006. After years of discussion and debate, the complex is currently being redeveloped for both commercial and residential use, keeping the landmark Saarinen building preserved.
This video, in addition to giving a clear, brief history of Bell Labs and the Holmdel complex, also provides good insight into the life of the Bell employee, not just in the work place but at social gatherings and in community outreach. The three shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 for the achievement. It may be the most important invention of the 20th century.
This 1965 film shows footage of them reunited/recreating their 1940s lab time to show how it was done, but in real life they had parted. Bardeen had left the labs in 1951 for the U. of IL; Shockley in 1956 to run a semiconductor company in California (laying the groundwork for Silicon Valley), and Brattain retired in 1967 to Whitman College.

The year was 1973, and the computer operating system UNIX, invented at Bell Labs by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, had just morphed into its third iteration or improvement. The first version been released within the company 2 years before, and at this point there were machines running UNIX at 16 computer centers within the Bell System. These were primarily at Bell Labs locations — Whippany, NJ; Columbus, OH; Indian Hill, IL; and of course Murray Hill, NJ and Holmdel, NJ — among others. This film, made as a new employee's orientation to the Holmdel location's center, is a rare glimpse into the operations and procedures of an early 1970s research-oriented computing center.
UNIX evolved out of necessity at Bell Labs. The system's creators were looking for better ways to integrate a shared computer environment. (Read Ritchie's time-sharing system reminiscences) At this point, computers in the Bell System weren't just relegated to computer science or the development of computer language. They were employed for all kinds of complex engineering calculations, and, sometimes, after hours, for making art and music.

The Voder by Homer Dudley (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey) was the first device that could generate continuous human speech electronically. The flowing composition of the many speech sounds had to be done manually in realtime on a special keyboard shown in this video.
In 1939, Alden P. Armagnac wrote in "Popular Science" about this speaking device: "He hasn't any mouth, lungs, or larynx—but he talks a blue streak. His name is Pedro the Voder, and you may see him in action at the New York and San Francisco world's fairs. His creation from vacuum tubes and electrical circuits, by Bell Telephone Laboratories engineers, crowns centuries of effort to duplicate the human voice.
To manufacture Pedro's conversation, his operator employs a keyboard like that of an old-fashioned parlor organ. Thirteen black and white keys, fingered one or more at a time, produce all the vowels and consonants of speech. Another key regulates the loudness of the synthetic voice, which comes from a loudspeaker. A foot pedal varies the inflection meanwhile, so that the same sentence may state a fact or ask a question. About a year's practice enables an operator to make Pedro talk glibly."

The Voder by Homer Dudley (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey) was the first device that could generate continuous human speech electronically. The flowing composition of the many speech sounds had to be done manually in realtime on a special keyboard shown in this video.
In 1939, Alden P. Armagnac wrote in "Popular Science" about this speaking device: "He hasn't any mouth, lungs, or larynx—but he talks a blue streak. His name is Pedro the Voder, and you may see him in action at the New York and San Francisco world's fairs. His creation from vacuum tubes and electrical circuits, by Bell Telephone Laboratories engineers, crowns centuries of effort to duplicate the human voice.
To manufacture Pedro's conversation, his operator employs a keyboard like that of an old-fashioned parlor organ. Thirteen black and white keys, fingered one or more at a time, produce all the vowels and consonants of speech. Another key regulates the loudness of the synthetic voice, which comes from a loudspeaker. A foot pedal varies the inflection meanwhile, so that the same sentence may state a fact or ask a question. About a year's practice enables an operator to make Pedro talk glibly."

Arno Allan Penzias was born in Munich, Germany on 26 April 1933, the eldest son of Karl and Justine Penzias. Because of the rise of Hitler and their Polish-Jewish decent, the elder Penzias sought ways of getting the family out of Germany. When the British government agreed to accept 10,000 Jewish children on humanitarian grounds, young Arno and his brother were put on the kindertransport. It takes approx. 8 seconds for the wave to travel back and forth, resulting in a wave speed of 495km/h ! This is the average speed. In the upper section of the cable line, the effective speed is slightly higher because of the higher tension. The opposite happens near the lower terminal. So, the higher the wave climbed, the faster it gets: The upper terminal is located 200meters higher than the lower terminal. (The visual speed may appear slow because the cable was filmed using a 10x zoom).

Because of the rise of Hitler and their Polish-Jewish decent, the elder Penzias sought ways of getting the family out of Germany. Their parents were able to join them several weeks later. Several months later the family headed for New York City, settling there in early 1940.
As a child Penzias' attended public schools in the Bronx, New York. As a teenager, he attended Brooklyn Technical High School, a specialized public school for boys and then matriculated at City College of New York planning to study chemical engineering. However, Penzias abandoned chemistry for physics in his freshman year, and, in 1954, graduated near the top 10% of his class at CCNY. An impressive accomplishment, but well behind most of his fellow physics majors.
After graduation, Penzias served for two years as a radar officer in the U.S Army Signal Corps. Penzias' Army experience helped him obtain a research assistantship in the Columbia University Radiation Laboratory, which was then heavily involved in microwave physics. There, Penzias worked under Charles Townes who would go on to invent the maser, which then inspired creation of the laser. In 1956 Penzias enrolled as a student at Columbia and by 1962 had earned a Ph.D.
Shortly after leaving Columbia, Penzias became a full-time member of the Bell Labs technical staff. He conducted research in radio communications and took part in the pioneering Echo and Telstar communications satellite experiments. As a researcher, he focused on radio astronomy, radio transmission, satellite communications, and radio reception.
In 1963 Bell Labs hired another radio astronomer, Robert Wilson, who came from the California Institute of Technology. By 1964, Penzias and Wilson were using the most sensitive radio astronomy antenna available to conduct research in radio astronomy and satellite communications. The pair discovered that a faint signal pervaded all space and set out to find what this noise was. Systematically they eliminated different possible sources of the noise and determined that the universe was itself the source. Princeton University physicist Robert H. Arno Allan Penzias was born in Munich, Germany on 26 April 1933, the eldest son of Karl and Justine Penzias. Because of the rise of Hitler and their Polish-Jewish decent, the elder Penzias sought ways of getting the family out of Germany. When the British government agreed to accept 10,000 Jewish children on humanitarian grounds, young Arno and his brother were put on the kindertransport. Their parents were able to join them several weeks later. Several months later the family headed for New York City, settling there in early 1940.
As a child Penzias' attended public schools in the Bronx, New York. As a teenager, he attended Brooklyn Technical High School, a specialized public school for boys and then matriculated at City College of New York planning to study chemical engineering. However, Penzias abandoned chemistry for physics in his freshman year, and, in 1954, graduated near the top 10% of his class at CCNY. An impressive accomplishment, but well behind most of his fellow physics majors.
After graduation, Penzias served for two years as a radar officer in the U.S Army Signal Corps. Penzias' Army experience helped him obtain a research assistantship in the Columbia University Radiation Laboratory, which was then heavily involved in microwave physics. There, Penzias worked under Charles Townes who would go on to invent the maser, which then inspired creation of the laser. In 1956 Penzias enrolled as a student at Columbia and by 1962 had earned a Ph.D.
Shortly after leaving Columbia, Penzias became a full-time member of the Bell Labs technical staff. He conducted research in radio communications and took part in the pioneering Echo and Telstar communications satellite experiments. As a researcher, he focused on radio astronomy, radio transmission, satellite communications, and radio reception.

In 1974, Gary Kildall, an instructor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and a consultant to Intel, developed CP/M (Control Program for Microcomputers), the first portable disk operating system for microcomputers, in his tool shed office in Pacific Grove. Together with his wife Dorothy McEwen, Kildall founded Digital Research, Inc. in Pacific Grove, California in 1976 to promote the software that, together with the microprocessor and the disk drive, would provide one of the three fundamental building blocks of the personal computer revolution. By the early 1980s DRI employed several hundred people and reported that "More than a million people are now using CP/M controlled systems." The stories of DRI's demise in the face of competition from Microsoft and IBM and of Kildall's tragic death in 1991 continue to fuel myths and conspiracy theories to this day.
This video records a session recorded in Pacific Grove City Hall and the unveiling of a plaque outside the former DRI headquarters at 801 Lighthouse Avenue on April 25, 2014 installed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering to commemorate the first working prototype of CP/M. The IEEE Milestone in Electrical Engineering and Computing program honors important events in electrical engineering and computing. Achievements such Thomas Edison's electric light bulb, Marconi's wireless communications, and Bell Labs first transistor are recognized with a plaque in an appropriate location.
The program includes comments by Howard Michel, IEEE President-Elect, a conversation with former DRI vice presidents Gordon Eubanks and Tom Rolander moderated by Computer History Museum Semiconductor Curator David Laws, and reminiscences by former National Semiconductor CEO Brian Halla and software consultant John Wharton recalling their roles as Intel engineering liaison to DRI. Brian Berg, a member of the IEEE Santa Clara Valley History Committee and the Asilomar Microcomputer Workshop Organizing Committee, one of the sponsors of the event introduces the speakers, including Gary Kildall's son, Scott.

Penn's picturesque urban campus features some of the most impressive architecture in Philadelphia, including buildings that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
For 120 years, Penn was located in Center City Philadelphia before the campus relocated to West Philadelphia in 1872.
The Gothic Revival style College Hall, designed in 1872 by architect Thomas Webb Richards, was the first building constructed on the new campus. The multi-purpose building housed faculty offices, classrooms, a gym, the library and research labs. The original building included clock towers on each side of the center portion of the building. The west tower, which had a large bell that called students to class, was removed 1914 (the bell is now on display in Houston Hall). The east tower was torn down in 1929.
Professor David Brownlee of Penn's Department of the History of Art, says, "the University relocated itself really on the crest of a wave of prosperity and achievement. Those buildings built in the first decade or so after we moved to West Philadelphia reflect the energy of an industrial America and of its greatest industrial city." Brownlee, an architectural historian, co-authored "Building America's First University: An Historical and Architectural Guide to the University of Pennsylvania."
Fisher Fine Arts Library, designed by prominent Philadelphia architect Frank Furness in 1891, is also in the National Register of Historic places.
The Furness building was renovated and restored to its original grandeur in 1991, and it was renamed Fisher Fine Arts Library in honor of donors Anne and Jerome Fisher.
In 1957, during a second building boom on campus, Penn hired renowned architect Louis Kahn to design the Richards Medical Research Building. It was completed in 1960, and Brownlee says Kahn's innovative design changed the world of modern architecture.
"It was, in every conceivable way, as different from the architecture from the recent past as it was possible to be," Brownlee says. "Rough and granular, where that architecture [of the recent past] was smooth. Irregular and picturesque where that architecture had been composed defined by simple geometric forms. Highly specialized with respect to its purpose and to its place as that architecture had been generic."
Having designed the structure to fit in with surrounding buildings, Kahn, a Penn alum, incorporated complementary colors and textures from the Morgan Building, and the Quad dormitories. Today, the Richards Medical Research Lab is among the buildings on an elite list of National Historic Landmarks, under a program run by the National Park Service.

And they got bewildered. Small objects seemed to have a sort of fuzzy properties. What's more - the very act of observing them, of measuring them, seemed to bring them to live, excavate them from a vague domain.
Equations of quantum mechanics were beautiful. They did generate astonishingly correct answers for mind boggling questions about the exotic micro world. But there was a price to pay. Objective reality had to go.

SYNOPSIS
At the beginning of the 20th Century, a major shift took place in science. Scientists started doing experiments with unprecedented precision -- fiddling with single particles, atoms, and electrons. And they got bewildered. Small objects seemed to have sort of fuzzy properties. What's more, the very act of observing them, of measuring them, seemed to bring them to life, excavate them from a vague domain. The equations of quantum mechanics were beautiful. They generated astonishingly correct answers for mind-boggling questions about the exotic micro world. But there was a price to pay. Objective reality had to go. Was it regained?

The building would also house labs for their engineers to continue transforming the networks that Juniper builds. Mission Bell called on its distributor, Aura Hardwoods, and Timber Products Company to make its vision a reality. It takes approx. 8 seconds for the wave to travel back and forth, resulting in a wave speed of 495km/h !
This is the average speed. In the upper section of the cable line, the effective speed is slightly higher because of the higher tension. The opposite happens near the lower terminal. So, the higher the wave climbed, the faster it gets: The upper terminal is located 200meters higher than the lower terminal.
(The visual speed may appear slow because the cable was filmed using a 10x zoom).
