The motion of this year's TT debate is 'Tolerance is the new Intolerance' and it's like one of those words or phrases that read the same way, no matter which way you read them, left to right or vice versa. Speaking for the motion: Suhel Seth, the actor Kajol and the actor Anupam Kher; speaking against: Justice Asok Ganguly, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and Barkha Dutt, journalist and TV anchor; moderating the debate is Mukul Kesavan, writer and historian.
On the scuttlebutt I hear that Suhel Seth's opening line is going to be something like 'Chairman Sir, it's unfair! There are only three speakers on our side of the motion while the other side has four, including you!' As it happens, Seth doesn't actually come out with this except tangentially, kicking a tepidly waved corporate boot at Kesavan's invisible jhola, but only in passing. Kesavan himself is the model of propriety and neutrality, liberal jhola kept well out of sight, as in his introductory remarks he describes Anupam Kher as 'durable' and Suhel Seth, memorably, as 'an ornament of corporate India'.
Seth doesn't mind - or more likely doesn't notice - as he begins the arguments for the motion. It's a warm evening at Calcutta Club, the banks of lights are full on the speakers, but it's still mystifying how the sweat starts flying off Seth's face even before he's finished a sentence. I'm waiting for him to say the line that's been his favourite since he was a La Martiniere student in the 1970s: 'HANG THEM!' or, 'LET THEM HANG!' but this evening the Calcutta boy disappoints, he doesn't want to hang anyone, or not yet anyway.
In fact, as has never been suspected of him, Seth swings both ways, with the occasional yorker and slower ball in between. Bengal, we are told, is a Temple of Tolerance, Mamata Banerjee is a 'timid lady' (it was sarcasm, one could tell), intolerance comes from 'media circuses', and then he uses his second favourite word, 'idiots', several times. He tells us how 'we were all' intolerant of Marwaris and how a certain derogatory word is used for people from the Northeast. He says the PM should speak up and how he looks forward to a gender-neutral corporate India. He proclaims how branding an entire nation as intolerant is (not idiotic but) 'stupid'. 'India is a land of ideas!', 'Calcutta is a city of ideas!', 'Intolerance should not become a late-motif'. At the end of his speech you can't tell what Suhel Seth is selling but you can tell he is a salesman.

Veteran Bollywood actor and Padma Bhushan awardee Anupam Kher slammed the Congress party and the entire intolerance brigade while speaking at ‘The Telegraph National Debate’ on March 5.
Kher started by taking on Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly who spoke before him and had called the Supreme Court judgement in Afzal Guru case wrong. “I am shocked, ashamed and saddened by what you said being a judge you say that SC judgement was wrong,” Kher said to Justice Ganguly.
He also said that if Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi became even one-tenth of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi was, he would vote for him.
He also lashed out at Kanhaiya Kumar, who he said was being projected as a hero, for being a participant at the event in which anti-India slogans were raised.

Anupam Kher (born 7 March 1955) is an Indian actor who has appeared in nearly 450 films and 100 plays. Though mainly appearing in Bollywood films, he has had roles in some films from other nations as well. He has held the post of Chairman of the Censor Board and National School of Drama in India.
Anupam Kher was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family and lived in Shimla and was educated at D.A.V. School there. He is an alumnus and a former chairperson of the National School of Drama. Some of his early acting was in plays performed at the Himachal Pradesh University.
Kher made his acting debut in the 1982 Hindi movie Aagman. Then in 1984 came Saaransh, where 28-year old Kher played a retired man who has lost his son. He hosted TV shows such as Say Na Something To Anupam Uncle, Sawaal Dus Crore Ka and the recent Lead India. He has had many comic roles but has also played the villain such as his acclaimed role as terrorist Dr. Dang in Karma (1986). For his role in Daddy (1989) he received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. Kher has won the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role five times, more than any other actor.

Video courtesy :: ABP ananda The motion of this year's TT debate is 'Tolerance is the new Intolerance' and it's like one of those words or phrases that read the same way, no matter which way you read them, left to right or vice versa. Speaking for the motion: Suhel Seth, the actor Kajol and the actor Anupam Kher; speaking against: Justice Asok Ganguly, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and Barkha Dutt, journalist and TV anchor; moderating the debate is Mukul Kesavan, writer and historian. On the scuttlebutt I hear that Suhel Seth's opening line is going to be something like 'Chairman Sir, it's unfair! There are only three speakers on our side of the motion while the other side has four, including you!' As it happens, Seth doesn't actually come out with this except tangentially, kicking a tepidly waved corporate boot at Kesavan's invisible jhola, but only in passing. Kesavan himself is the model of propriety and neutrality, liberal jhola kept well out of sight, as in his introductory remarks he describes Anupam Kher as 'durable' and Suhel Seth, memorably, as 'an ornament of corporate India'. Seth doesn't mind - or more likely doesn't notice - as he begins the arguments for the motion. It's a warm evening at Calcutta Club, the banks of lights are full on the speakers, but it's still mystifying how the sweat starts flying off Seth's face even before he's finished a sentence. I'm waiting for him to say the line that's been his favourite since he was a La Martiniere student in the 1970s: 'HANG THEM!' or, 'LET THEM HANG!' but this evening the Calcutta boy disappoints, he doesn't want to hang anyone, or not yet anyway. In fact, as has never been suspected of him, Seth swings both ways, with the occasional yorker and slower ball in between. Bengal, we are told, is a Temple of Tolerance, Mamata Banerjee is a 'timid lady' (it was sarcasm, one could tell), intolerance comes from 'media circuses', and then he uses his second favourite word, 'idiots', several times. He tells us how 'we were all' intolerant of Marwaris and how a certain derogatory word is used for people from the Northeast. He says the PM should speak up and how he looks forward to a gender-neutral corporate India. He proclaims how branding an entire nation as intolerant is (not idiotic but) 'stupid'. 'India is a land of ideas!', 'Calcutta is a city of ideas!', 'Intolerance should not become a late-motif'. The motion of this year's TT debate is 'Tolerance is the new Intolerance' and it's like one of those words or phrases that read the same way, no matter which way you read them, left to right or vice versa. Speaking for the motion: Suhel Seth, the actor Kajol and the actor Anupam Kher; speaking against: Justice Asok Ganguly, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and Barkha Dutt, journalist and TV anchor; moderating the debate is Mukul Kesavan, writer and historian.
On the scuttlebutt I hear that Suhel Seth's opening line is going to be something like 'Chairman Sir, it's unfair! There are only three speakers on our side of the motion while the other side has four, including you!' As it happens, Seth doesn't actually come out with this except tangentially, kicking a tepidly waved corporate boot at Kesavan's invisible jhola, but only in passing. Kesavan himself is the model of propriety and neutrality, liberal jhola kept well out of sight, as in his introductory remarks he describes Anupam Kher as 'durable' and Suhel Seth, memorably, as 'an ornament of corporate India'.
Seth doesn't mind - or more likely doesn't notice - as he begins the arguments for the motion. It's a warm evening at Calcutta Club, the banks of lights are full on the speakers, but it's still mystifying how the sweat starts flying off Seth's face even before he's finished a sentence. I'm waiting for him to say the line that's been his favourite since he was a La Martiniere student in the 1970s: 'HANG THEM!' or, 'LET THEM HANG!' but this evening the Calcutta boy disappoints, he doesn't want to hang anyone, or not yet anyway.
In fact, as has never been suspected of him, Seth swings both ways, with the occasional yorker and slower ball in between. Bengal, we are told, is a Temple of Tolerance, Mamata Banerjee is a 'timid lady' (it was sarcasm, one could tell), intolerance comes from 'media circuses', and then he uses his second favourite word, 'idiots', several times. He tells us how 'we were all' intolerant of Marwaris and how a certain derogatory word is used for people from the Northeast. He says the PM should speak up and how he looks forward to a gender-neutral corporate India. He proclaims how branding an entire nation as intolerant is (not idiotic but) 'stupid'. 'India is a land of ideas!', 'Calcutta is a city of ideas!', 'Intolerance should not become a late-motif'. At the end of his speech you can't tell what Suhel Seth is selling but you can tell he is a salesman.

Seth doesn't mind - or more likely doesn't notice - as he begins the arguments for the motion. It's a warm evening at Calcutta Club, the banks of lights are full on the speakers, but it's still mystifying how the sweat starts flying off Seth's face even before he's finished a sentence. I'm waiting for him to say the line that's been his favourite since he was a La Martiniere student in the 1970s: 'HANG THEM!' or, 'LET THEM HANG!' but this evening the Calcutta boy disappoints, he doesn't want to hang anyone, or not yet anyway.
In fact, as has never been suspected of him, Seth swings both ways, with the occasional yorker and slower ball in between. Bengal, we are told, is a Temple of Tolerance, Mamata Banerjee is a 'timid lady' (it was sarcasm, one could tell), intolerance comes from 'media circuses', and then he uses his second favourite word, 'idiots', several times. He tells us how 'we were all' intolerant of Marwaris and how a certain derogatory word is used for people from the Northeast. He says the PM should speak up and how he looks forward to a gender-neutral corporate India. He proclaims how branding an entire nation as intolerant is (not idiotic but) 'stupid'. 'India is a land of ideas!', 'Calcutta is a city of ideas!', 'Intolerance should not become a late-motif'. At the end of his speech you can't tell what Suhel Seth is selling but you can tell he is a salesman.

Veteran Bollywood actor and Padma Bhushan awardee Anupam Kher slammed the Congress party and the entire intolerance brigade while speaking at ‘The Telegraph National Debate’ on March 5.
Kher started by taking on Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly who spoke before him and had called the Supreme Court judgement in Afzal Guru case wrong. “I am shocked, ashamed and saddened by what you said being a judge you say that SC judgement was wrong,” Kher said to Justice Ganguly.
He also said that if Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi became even one-tenth of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi was, he would vote for him.
He also lashed out at Kanhaiya Kumar, who he said was being projected as a hero, for being a participant at the event in which anti-India slogans were raised.

Padmabhushan awardee Anupam Kher took the intolerant-battle to Justice Ashok Ganguly and the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party like no one ever! In his fiery speech at Telegraph National Debate in Kolkata, the Bollywood actor ripped apart the former Supreme Court Judge Ganguly and Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala in presence of other speakers. Also present at the event was Bollywood actress Kajol, NDTV Editor Barkha Dutt, and eminent socialite Suhel Seth. The veteran Bollywood actor not only slammed the Opposition party for its disruptive tactics in the Parliament, but also bashed them for their double standards.
The response from the crowd was a jubilant one and were in all praise of Anupam Kher. The 60-year-old actor explained how the Congress party was an epitome of intolerance by taking pot-shots at Rahul Gandhi, and how did they had implemented Emergency in 1974. Kher was visibly irate with how things are going on at the moment in the country. Looking at the blazing speech delivered by Kher, the 10-minute video clearly shows the (mis)information in the air at the moment!
He attacked former Supreme Court judge Ashok Ganguly who raised doubts over the execution of 2013 Parliament terror attack convict Afzal Guru. Padmabhushan awardee Anupam Kher took the intolerant-battle to Justice Ashok Ganguly and the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party like no one ever! In his fiery speech at Telegraph National Debate in Kolkata, the Bollywood actor ripped apart the former Supreme Court Judge Ganguly and Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala in presence of other speakers. Also present at the event was Bollywood actress Kajol, NDTV Editor Barkha Dutt, and eminent socialite Suhel Seth. The veteran Bollywood actor not only slammed the Opposition party for its disruptive tactics in the Parliament, but also bashed them for their double standards.
The response from the crowd was a jubilant one and were in all praise of Anupam Kher. The 60-year-old actor explained how the Congress party was an epitome of intolerance by taking pot-shots at Rahul Gandhi, and how did they had implemented Emergency in 1974. Kher was visibly irate with how things are going on at the moment in the country. Looking at the blazing speech delivered by Kher, the 10-minute video clearly shows the (mis)information in the air at the moment!
He attacked former Supreme Court judge Ashok Ganguly who raised doubts over the execution of 2013 Parliament terror attack convict Afzal Guru. What we should really be intolerant about is intolerance itself. What we should be intolerant about is poverty, the subjugation of rights and opportunities. Why am I being part of an intolerance discourse when actually I am not intolerant? Why are we dividing India on lines of caste and creed and religion and exposing every little nuanced statement put out by stupid people as the final yardstick of this particular government… and I don’t mean this particular government… I mean that particular government. I am not for once supporting the fact that the Prime Minister doesn’t speak up when he should. I think he should… but that’s for the Prime Minister to decide.

In a school in Kerala the national anthem was sung and three schoolchildren respectfully stood up for the anthem but they did not sing. Initially the school authorities overlooked it, till it caught the notice of a patriotic gentleman who happened to be a member of the Assembly. He raised it and ultimately the students were expelled. They challenged it before the courts and the Supreme Court... in upholding the rights of the children made a very prophetic statement in its concluding part of the judgment. The Supreme Court said: “Our tradition teaches tolerance, our philosophy preaches tolerance, our Constitution practises tolerance. Let us not dilute it”. In the wake of aggressive nationalism of the present scenario this may sound a little strange to many ears but this is the crux of tolerance in our Constitution.
