I have a lot of stray and ferrel cats in the neighborhood. I have been systematically collecting and getting the females spayed, and just today we took one in and they gave her back to us saying she had “conjuctiuitis in left eye, rash all over body”. I knew she had some sort of skin problem, but I thought it was fleas.
How much would it cost to take her in for this sort of thing? I like to take care of these cats, but if I can’t afford it I can’t afford it. The last animal I took into the vet was my husband’s dog who was diagnosed with liver disease (cost about 500 dollars for that diagnosis) and he ended up actually having cancer. My indoor cats, I am willing to spend as much money as necessary on, but if it’s not too costly, I’ll take this female in too.
Any ideas?
1 April, 2016 at 10:42 pm #845612Deanna, there is no way of knowing how much a vet would be as it would vary by area (if you are in the United States) and by clinic and what they offer. If you have an animal shelter in your area that offers vet services, TNR services too, I would call them and tell them of your dilemma. We just recently got one started up and they are awesome with prices. I used to take my cats and there have been many to a local vet who did NOT cut me any slack when bringing a lot of cats to be neutered/spayed. I think this is ridiculous being in a rural area, with a farm and people dumping cats and dogs. It’s just plain irresponsible. I have spent thousands over the years… 😯
Sometimes these shelters do spay clinics for FREE!2 April, 2016 at 1:11 am #845617Yeah, it’s been ridiculous. When my in laws first moved here they had 2 female cats, and know we have more than we can keep track of. I try to take care of them, but nobody here really cares about spaying/neutering, so kittens show up and disappear all the time. I guess I’ll have to call the vet tomorrow and see.
2 April, 2016 at 2:23 am #845623I sympathize with you Deanna. I know what having a large colony of cats is like–and they end up getting sick with upper respiratory infections/wounds from fighting/pregnancies…the list goes on. I have become quite good at treating cats with antibiotics that I’ve bought at the local farm stores (TSC)and curing eye infections, URI’s, wounds, etc. Now after all these years we finally get an animal welfare league to come into the area as a man left a large estate after his death for just that purpose. Bless him! If you need any help or have questions and concerns, please let us know–TDK is here to help!
