Erudite, narcissist and secretive, he is considered to be the first Greek impressionist composer (with obvious influence from Debussy and Ravel) but also “nationalist” with the use of his own orientalistic Hellenism (both musical and thematical) in his work, sometimes mysterious and unapproachable from the ways and standards of the western art music .
The work presented in this video is his 1st String Quartet in G (undated) restorated by Nicos Christodoulou and Byron Fidetzis (in its 3rd movement) because of the work’s multiple and unreadable original scripts by Riadis. Complicated and demanding for the performers, in this work Riadis flirts with the Orient (the Middle East and the Balkans that is) researching and using rythms and techniques of the eastern traditional music. Feeling both Westerner and Αnatolian (acknowledging the fact that he was born and lived in Salonica, a great crossroad of cultures in the early 20th century) in some parts of the work he is pushing his exoticism as far as many of the orientalist western musicians never did, mixing through the strings the “rational West” and the “mystical East” in a eerie and magical way.
