The Sydney Monorail (originally TNT Harbourlink and later Metro Monorail) was a single-loop monorail in Sydney, Australia, that connected Darling Harbour, Chinatown and the Sydney central business and shopping districts. It opened in July 1988 and closed in June 2013.
There were eight stations on the 3.6 kilometre loop, with up to six trains operating simultaneously. It served major attractions and facilities such as the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Aquarium and Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. The system was operated by Veolia.
Sydney Monorail was initially conceived in the late 1980s as part of the redevelopment of 50 hectares (120 acres) of land at Darling Harbour, providing a passenger link with the Sydney CBD. Initially operated by TNT Harbourlink, the monorail opened on 21 July 1988 after a construction period of 26 months. The first test services ran in October 1987 on a 500-metre section at Darling Harbour.
TNT Harbourlink was awarded a 50-year concession until 2038.
Sydney /ˈsɪdni/ is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Located on Australia's east coast, the metropolis surrounds the world's largest natural harbour, and sprawls towards the Blue Mountains to the west. Residents of Sydney are known as "Sydneysiders". Sydney is the second official seat and second official residence of the Governor-General of Australia, the Prime Minister of Australia and the Cabinet of Australia.
The Sydney area has been inhabited by indigenous Australians since the Upper Paleolithic period. The first British settlers arrived in 1788 to found Sydney as a penal colony, the first European settlement in Australia. Since convict transportation ended in the mid-19th century, the city has transformed from a colonial outpost into a major global cultural and economic centre.
The population of Sydney at the time of the 2011 census was 4.39 million, 1.5 million of which were born overseas, representing many different nationalities and making Sydney one of the most multicultural cities in the world. There are more than 250 different languages spoken in Sydney and about one-third of residents speak a language other than English at home.
Sydney Metro (known during early planning and construction as Sydney Rapid Transit) is an automated rapid transit system under construction in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The first dedicated rapid transit line to be constructed is a link from Rouse Hill to Epping. The new line will connect to the existing Epping to Chatswood railway line, which will be converted to rapid transit standards. The entire project is called Sydney Metro Northwest and is expected to open in 2019.
Planning work has commenced for Sydney Metro City & Southwest, an extension across Sydney Harbour and through the Central Business District which will then take the trains to Bankstown. This is expected to start construction in 2017 and open in 2024. Following this, the "Illawarra local" tracks between Sydenham and Hurstville are planned to be linked to the metro network.
Sydney will be the first Australian city to build a full-fledged rapid transit system. Plans and projects involving a high speed, rapid transit underground railway in Sydney date at least back to 2008, although an initial proposal was raised as early as 2001. Despite extensive plans for an underground network in the past, disputes over privatisation and funding had hampered government approval, delaying its inception. In spite of difficulties getting the project off the ground, government approval for what was initially known as the North West Rail Link – Sydney's first underground metro, was given in 2013. Route extensions and a name change to the Sydney Metro soon followed.
The points of the compass are points on a compass, specifically on the compass rose, marking divisions of the four cardinal directions: North, South, East, West. The number of points may be only the 4 cardinal points, or the 8 principal points adding the intercardinal (or ordinal) directions northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW). In meteorological usage further intermediate points are added to give the sixteen points of a wind compass. Finally, at the most complete in European tradition, are found the full thirty-two points of the mariner's compass. In ancient China 24 points of the compass were used.
In the mariner's exercise of boxing the compass, all thirty-two points of the compass are named in clockwise order. The names of intermediate points are formed by the initials of the cardinal directions and their intermediate ordinal directions, and are very handy to refer to a heading (or course or azimuth) in a general or colloquial fashion, without having to resort to computing or recalling degrees. For most applications, the minor points have been superseded by degrees measured clockwise from North.
Ten Eyewitness News (stylised as TEN Eyewitness News) is an Australian television news service, produced by Network Ten.
The network's hour-long news program airs at 5pm each evening as five state-based editions in the capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, covering local, national and world news, including sport and weather. Local traffic reports are broadcast live into Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane from a regular reporter in a helicopter via the Australian Traffic Network. Weekend editions are presented nationally from Network Ten's studios at Pyrmont in Sydney.
Ten's news division also assists in the production of the current affairs program The Project. It draws upon the resources of CBS News, ITN, APTN and Reuters for select international coverage.
Network Ten, introduced its News Service in Australia in 1965, with the networks founding and was a pioneering force behind the concept of the hour-long News Bulletin, co-anchored in the form of Eyewitness News from 1973 onwards. The 1980s were arguably the network's most successful period as a news provider with its local Sydney and Melbourne bulletins often rating highest for their 6pm timeslot. Ten's flagship nightly bulletin news services has undergone a number of name changes since inception in 1965 including: Ten News, Ten Evening News, Eyewitness News and Ten Eyewitness News over the years before finally settling on the Ten News brand in 1994, which would remain in use for 19 years.
Final ride at 9.30pm, then the monorail track will eventually be removed.

November 2009 - MONORAIL tour in Darling Harbour and through CBD, Sydney, Australia, HD video, no music just original sound...
Sydney Metro Monorail is closing on June 30, 2013. I was in Sydney in January 2013 and had a great time riding and videoing the monorail. I am sorry to see the monorail shut down.
This film shows the Sydney Monorail in March 1991, including a look at some of the stations, riding the trains and more. There are also a few views from when the system was under construction in 1988. This film was made long before the new tram line was opened so it offers a chance to see some areas as they were in the day before the tramway... Always controversial, right from the outset, the Sydney Monorail finally succummbed to its critics and closed on 30th June 2013. Unfortunately the system used low capacity trains; perhaps if it had of used higher capacity trains - as used in many Japanese towns and cities, then its greater carrying capacity would have silenced some of the critics and increased the justification for expanding the single 'starter line' to become a real urban tra...
Did some filming of the Sydney Monorail in the final weeks of its operation.
The old Sydney Monorail has ended its role in helping deliver the city’s public transport future as part of Sydney Metro – Australia’s biggest public transport project. In 2014, 60 steel beams of the Sydney Monorail were recycled and used to build a temporary road bridge at Norwest. This meant Brookhollow Ave was only closed for a few months while the station was dug out underneath – not for up to three years as originally proposed. The temporary road bridge is no longer needed because the final station structure is being built, so the old Monorail beams have now been pulled out. “This was Sydney’s transport past helping build the city’s public transport future,” NSW Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance said. “We’re one step closer to Sydney Metro services starting i...
The Sydney Monorail was an elevated single-loop railway running through central Sydney, Australia. This video was filmed doing somewhat more than one loop going from World Square station to the City Center Station. The Stations in a single loop was World Square, Galeries Victoria, City Center, Darling Park, Harbourside, Convention, Paddy's Markets and Chinatown. The Metro Monorail ceased operation in June 2013
A week after the final ride, parts of the monorail trains and system is beginning to be removed.

Deb rides the Sydney Monorail in 2013 a few weeks before it closes forever.
They may have been half a city and a generation apart, but the former Sydney Monorail has helped build Sydney's rail future on the North West Rail Link. And it also saved motorists in Sydney's North West years of delays. Sixty steel monorail beams, many of them removed from Pitt St in the CBD in 2013, were refurbished in western Sydney before being used on the North West Rail Link project. They were turned into 29 bridge girders and used to build a temporary road bridge on Brookhollow Avenue at Norwest -- the site of the new Norwest railway station. This innovative solution dramatically cut the length of time Brookhollow Road had to be closed -- from around three years to just three months, so the new underground railway station could be excavated. The excavation continued under the ...
The opening of the Sydney Monorail as told by Channel 9 in 1988.
A view from the back window of the Sydney Monorail on 19/10/1994 during the day as it does one complete circuit of the loop. Because the shot had a fair bit of the dashboard in it I cropped some of the dashboard out and made the video widescreen for better viewing.
A full complete ride of the Monorail in Sydney city. the view is from the back as the front window is used by a driver ( for a monorail ?? !! )
In 1987, the year I arrived in Australia, I saw the monorail under construction as a strangely beautiful object in the middle of the city. The line of bare metal, unpainted steel, right next to the buildings in the CBD looked surreal. I thought it would be interesting to add a fictional Japanese figure in kimono on top of the monorail, against the backdrop of a modern city.
The Sydney Monorail will be torn down and the government will buy the Metro Light Rail, to assist with the extension to Dulwich Hill.

The complete journey aboard Sydney Light Rail's Inner West Line known as Route L1 between Central Station Colonnade & Dulwich Hill. Aside from the section between Central Station & the Star City Casino the line uses the right-of-way of the former Metropolitan Goods Line which once featured frequent freight trains for access to the docks which formerly operated at Pyrmont and other areas along the line.

From a shy civil engineering student to a (short-term) resident of Yass and a long-time scholar of all things Bradfield, meet Rodd Staples. The program director of Sydney Metro – Australia’s biggest public transport project – gives an insight into the life of an engineer in the 2017 Roderick Distinguished Lecture at the University of Sydney. Inspired by his grandfather Walter Hayward Staples – who worked on the Sydney Harbour Bridge – and by Dr JJC Bradfield, the world-renowned engineer who built the Coathanger, Rodd delivers a big-picture outlook at engineering as a career in the 21st century. Rodd outlines his plans for the “keyhole surgery” construction method in the delivery of Sydney Metro through the centre of Australia’s biggest city – in contrast to Bradfield’s open heart surger...
My video footage of what turned out to be by far the most chaotic James Bond premiere I've ever been to. The Australian Premiere was held yesterday at the State Theater in Sydney. They closed off one whole side of the street from everyone except guests and press, and the other side was for spectators whose only shelter from the pouring rain was the overhead monorail line. They didn't even redirect traffic, and so cars were allowed to drive through continuously blocking our view. Did I mention it was also quite crowded? Still, it certainly turned out to be a premiere to remember and I got some good footage.
Finally sat down and re-edited this one, due to non-stop talking from another Crew Member that rode from Sydenham to Central...! So basically, rather than silence, I took "travel noise" from other parts of the video and overlaid it. So it may sound / look weird, but at least there's some sort of appropriate noise...

Chiba Urban Monorail is documented (in Japanese) from inception through construction to operation in this HBC production. Chiba Urban Monorail is the longest suspended monorail system in the world at 15.2-kilometers. The French SAFEGE monorail technology was used for the system, as had been pioneered earlier with the Shonan Monorail (1971). For more monorail videos, please click above on my name.
