She was 89. “With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall,” read a tweet from the Bogart Estate, which is co-managed by Robbert de Klerk and Bacall’s son Stephen Bogart. According to TMZ, Bacall suffered a fatal stroke. Born Betty Jean Perske in the Bronx, she was a child of Jewish immigrants who was mostly raised by her single mother. While studying acting in New York, she started modelling and competing in pageants. Discovered on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar at 19, she signed with Warner Bros. and kicked off a movie career. La actriz debutó así en una obra maestra, un clásico de los años 40 en el que conoció al que sería su pareja artística y primer marido Humphrey Bogart. Como femme fatale lánguida del cine negro repitió la fórmula junto a Bogart en El sueño eterno, de nuevo con Hawks, y La senda tenebrosa, de Delmer Daves, y Cayo Largo (1949), de John Houston. Siendo una adolescente muy bonita, ingresó en la American Academy of Dramatic Arts, y pudo pagarse esos estudios trabajando como modelo y a la vez como acomodadora en un cine, antes de poder probar suerte en los escenarios teatrales neoyorquinos. Hija de emigrantes de Polonia y Rumania de origen judío que desembarcaron en el Bronx, Betty Joan Weinstein Perske, nacida el 16 de septiembre de 1924, comenzó su carrera en Broadway poco después de iniciada la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Fue en 1942 cuando apareció en el elenco de “Johnny 2 x 4”, pieza en tres actos escrita y dirigida por Anthony Brown, carrera teatral que retomó mucho después, en 1959, cuando apareció en “Goodbye Charley” (1959), “Flor de cactus” (1965), los musicales "Aplausos" (1970) y “La mujer del año” (1981), y en Londres, el drama “Dulce pájaro de juventud” (1985), de Tennessee Williams. A los 17 fue tapa de la revista Harper`s Bazaar, que sorprendió al director Howard Hawks, quien tres años después la convocó para el clásico “Tener y no tener”, que hace 70 años la convirtió en una gran figura del cine estadounidense, y la acercó al entonces exitoso Humphrey Bogart, que sería su esposo entre 1945 y hasta la muerte del actor en 1955, con el que tuvo dos hijos, Stephen Humphrey Bogart y Leslie Bogart. A este éxito siguieron "Agente confidencial" (1945), “Al borde del abismo” (1946), “La senda tenebrosa” (1947) y “Huracán de pasiones” (1948), y en 1953 fue parte del elenco de “Cómo pescar un millonario”, junto a Betty Grable y Marilyn Monroe. Luego de trabajar en filmes de Michael Curtiz y Jean Negulesco, en 1953 participó en “Palabras al viento”, junto a Rock Hudson, Dorothy Malone y Robert Stack, según las órdenes de Douglas Sirk. Bacall fue también dirigida por William Wellman, Vincente Minelli y J. Lee Thompson, una década después, en 1966, participó en “El blanco móvil”, junto a Paul Newman, tiempos en los que se convirtió en una figura del viejo Hollywood y sus apariciones comenzaron a ser menos frecuentes. Sin embargo, en 1974 volvió a aparecer en la multitudinaria “Crímen en el Expreso de Oriente”, de Sidney Lumet, según el relato de Agatha Christie, junto a Albert Finney, Martin Balsam, e Ingrid Bergman, entre otros, y finalmente "El tirador" (1976), de Don Siegel, junto a John Wayne. Además del Oscar honorario de 2009, Bacall recibió varios premios, como el Cecil B.
