Niger recieves more Malian refugees fleeing Tuareg violence
Djibril Oualid and his family are one of 2000 people who have escaped the Tuareg rebellion violence in the northern part of Mali, seeking refuge at Gaoudel in the Niger border village. Men, women and children are seen resting under makeshift huts for shelter. These refugees are happy to be safe despite the limited provision of food, water and medical supplies. Oualid said the rebels took everything away from them aside destroying their country. "I think that this is still early days of their arrival here in Niger and as it is very normal during this first few days of course they have needs about food, the basics needs like access to water, sanitation and so on," said Janet Lim, assistant High Commissioner for the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Although Niger is enduring a national food shortage and irregular rainfalls, the country continues to receive refugees with the help from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, by means of amenities distribution and setting up a new refugee camp to deal with incoming refugees. Neighboring countries, Mauritania and Algeria, UN allies are also accommodating refugees, while a call for a ceasefire and negotiations continue. According to Niger's government an estimated 25000 refugees are seeking refuge in Niger since the conflict initiated. Speaker: Janet Lim, assistant High Commissioner for the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Aboubacar "Badian" Diabate: Malian Guitar Master
(For more of Michal's original world music videos visit her site at inter-muse.com) This video has been a long time coming. The back story I've known guitarist/writer Banning Eyre for years and of course, his and Sean Barlow's tireless efforts with their baby, Afropop Worldwide. I've followed their travels and travails, and admired their dedication and perseverance. I always wanted to collaborate in some way, and I got my chance when Banning called me up in the summer of 2010 and told me he was going to visit a great guitarist who was in town, to record him for a radio show, and would I like to come along? As we drove up to the Bronx, Banning filled me in on how he had first met Badian, and I got a feeling for why this interview was going to be special for him. After a rather steep climb up to a rambling house on a hill, we were greeted by the elegantly clad Badian, and his regal wife. Banning set up his gear in the sunny backyard, and recording commenced. As I shot the performance I realized that the technique Badian used was unlike any I had seen before. One hears rippling melodic lines coming out of koras and ngonis, but transferring that sound to the guitar requires a great delicacy and precision utilizing both the up stroke and the down stroke of the "picking" fingers. Badian's technique is utterly fluid in this way. Thank goodness for a good zoom on my camera; I was able to get nice close-ups of his hands. Badian was in town for a month playing for the various ...

Mali rebels advance in north, mutineers seek president
Mali rebels advance in north, mutineers seek president
Tuareg rebels in northern Mali pushed south to occupy positions vacated by government forces, sources said, as mutinous soldiers in the distant capital sought to complete a coup by arresting the president. The MNLA rebels were approaching towns in the desert north, apparently taking advantage of the confusion created by a coup attempt in the capital Bamako by low-ranking soldiers angry at the government's handling of the uprising. By late on Wednesday, the mutinous soldiers had over-run the presidential palace, were in control of state television and roamed the streets of Bamako. But President Amadou Toumani Toure's whereabouts were still unconfirmed, officials said. Mali, which was flooded with men and weapons after Libya's civil war, was being rocked by crises - including the Tuareg-led rebellion, a growing Islamist threat and a food crisis - well before the soldiers mutinied. A Malian officer in the northern town of Kidal said rebels had occupied the military camp in Anefis, 100 km (60 miles) to the southwest, after government forces withdrew. "The army has pulled back to Gao," a source in Timbuktu, another main town in the north, told Reuters, asking not to be named. "There is no longer any military leadership. (The rebels) will take the towns in the north," he said. The MNLA rebels, whose numbers have been swollen by Malian Tuareg returning from the ranks of Libya's army, have been fighting since mid-January for an independent north. They have pushed government ...
