Swimming Australia is the peak governing body for competitive swimming in Australia. The body currently has approximately 90,000 registered members nationally in 1100 clubs across the country, which includes swimmers, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers. The body oversees the management and development of the sport from the national team at the elite level, the conduct of national and international events, through to grass roots participation. The organisation's vision is to become Australia’s leading sport through increased participation, continual outstanding performance and commercial excellence.

Competitive national swimming championships were first held in 1894. Australia had swimmers at most major international swimming events since the 1896 Summer Olympics.

This interest led to the creation of the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia, the precursor to Swimming Australia, which was founded in 1909 at a meeting of state swimming representaties at the Sports Club on Hunter Street in Sydney's CBD. There they established a charter which included the key features of the promotion of uniformity of rules and regulations across Australia; the adjudication all matters of disputes between affiliated associations; the control and management of swimmers visiting Australia; the control and management of Australian representatives in any contest of international nature; and control the recognition of all "best on record" performances.

After discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was explored and an additional five self-governing Crown Colonies were established.

James Magnussen (born 11 April 1991) is an Australian swimmer. He is the current 100-meter freestyle world champion, and holds the 4th fastest swim in history in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 47.10, which also stands as the fastest swim in textile swimwear material.

He has won a total of five medals in major international competition, three golds and two silvers spanning the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and the Pan Pacific Championships.

At the 2010 Australian Swimming Championships, Magnussen place 3rd in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 49.43, thus qualifying for the national team.

Magnussen earned the first international medal of his career at the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. In that event, Magnussen won a silver medal with Eamon Sullivan, Kyle Richardson, and Cameron Prosser in a time of 3:14.30, finishing behind the United States. Swimming the anchor leg, he had a split of 48.25. In the 100-meter freestyle, Magnussen finished 10th overall with a time of 48.94.

Pharrell Williams (born April 5, 1973), commonly known simply as Pharrell, is an American rapper, singer, record producer, composer, and fashion designer. Williams and Chad Hugo make up the record production duo The Neptunes, producing hip hop and R&B music. He is also the lead vocalist and drummer of hip-hop band N.E.R.D, which he formed with Hugo and childhood friend Shay Haley. He released his first single "Frontin'" in 2003 and followed up with his first album In My Mind in 2006.

As part of The Neptunes, Williams has produced numerous hit singles for various musicians. The two have earned three Grammy Awards amongst ten nominations. He is also the co-founder of the clothing brands Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream Clothing. He is a member of the supergroup V.A. Playaz with Fam-Lay, Clipse, Skillz, Missy Elliott, and Timbaland & Magoo.

Pharrell Williams was born on April 5, 1973, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the eldest of three sons of Carolyn, a teacher, and Pharaoh Williams, a handyman. He met Chad Hugo in a seventh-grade summer band camp where Williams played the keyboards and drums and Hugo played tenor saxophone. They were also both members of a marching band; Williams played the snare drum while Chad was student conductor. With Hugo, Williams attended Princess Anne High School where they played in the school band; there he got the name Skateboard P.

Bronte Campbell (born 14 May 1994, in Blantyre, Malawi) is an Australian swimmer who has been selected to compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Her older sister Cate is also a swimmer who won two bronze medals at the Beijing Olympics. Bronte and Cate will become the first Australian siblings on the same Olympic swimming team since the 1972 Summer Olympics and the first Australian sisters ever to compete in the same swimming event at the Olympics.

Her family moved from Malawi to Australia in 2001 and she and Cate joined the Indooropilly Swimming Club in Brisbane that same year. Their coach at Indooropilly, Simon Cusack, continues to coach both sisters.

In 2009, Bronte won gold in the 50m freestyle at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival then in 2011, she won gold in the same event at the 2011 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima, Peru. At the 2012 Olympic selection trials, she finished second in the 50m freestyle behind Cate, earning both girls a trip to London.
