The night before our 2010 Project-JK Rockin Rubicon Trail Run, I asked my friend Tom why he wanted to run this trail and he casually responded that "if you want to be an accomplished four wheeler, there are a few places in this world you have to go and one is the Rubicon." Crossing through the El Dorado National Forest up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Rubicon Trail is truly one of the most beautiful ones I've been on bar none. Of course, its unrelenting 22 miles of boulders that need to be crawled, steep ledges that need to be climbed, narrow trees that need to be squeezed between, deep muddy water crossings that need to be forded and tippy off camber terrain that needs to be carefully negotiated is ultimately what makes the Rubicon Trail so legendary and famous around the world.
Originally made as a single half hour video, RUBICON : A Legendary Jeep Trail & Off-Road Adventure has been broken down into a 3 part series, each approximately 10 minutes long and so that it could be broadcasted on YouTube. In this first episode, you will see where our adventures began in South Lake Tahoe, our road trip down to the Loon Lake Staging Area, our crawl through the Gatekeeper, descent into the Granite Bowl and climb up Walker Hill and all before tragedy strikes.

Originally made as a single half hour video, RUBICON : A Legendary Jeep Trail & Off-Road Adventure was broken down into a 3 part series, each approximately 10 minutes long and done so that it could be broadcasted on YouTube. In episode 2, we pick-up the pieces of Inyo-JK's Jeep, brush off the dust and continue our trek to Rubicon Springs. Along the way, we pass by the Soup Bowl, take in the impressive views across Spider Lake, descend the off camber granite slabs, tackle the rock obstacles at Buck Island Lake, negotiate our way down the very challenging Big Sluice, add a couple of stock Canadian Jeeps to our group, cross the historic Rubicon Bridge and then, just as we we pull into camp, we hear a call coming in over the CB... it's Trail Bud.

Approximately 100 feet in length and filled with enormous boulders that offer little in the way of traction, the Little Sluice has stood for decades as being the premier obstacle on the world famous Rubicon Trail. Unfortunately, as of Friday, September 28, 2012, it will also cease to exist as we've come to know, love, respect and fear it. In spite of significant efforts made over the last 2 years by organizations such as The Rubicon Trail Foundation and Friends of the Rubicon to prevent this from happening, El Dorado County Supervisors have decided to proceed with their plans to break up many of the boulders within the Little Sluice and level out the rest with tons of fill rock that'll be flown in by helicopter.
With this knowledge in hand, Mel Wade of Off Road Evolution asked us to join him on the Rubicon Trail to give this iconic obstacle, one final run. And, on Saturday, September 22, 2012, that's exactly what he did, completely unassisted and in the very same 4-door Jeep JK Wrangler that he used to conquer it 3 years before. In this short video, you will get to see raw footage of his run with limited edits and no music so that you can get the full experience of just how challenging the Little Sluice really was.

The Rubicon (Latin: Rubicō, Italian: Rubicone) is a shallow river in northeastern Italy, about 80 kilometres long, running from the Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic Sea through the southern Emilia-Romagna region, between the towns of Rimini and Cesena. The Latin word rubico comes from the adjective "rubeus", meaning "red". The river was so named because its waters are colored red by mud deposits. It was key to protecting Rome from Civil War.
The idiom "Crossing the Rubicon" means to pass a point of no return, and refers to Julius Caesar's army's crossing of the river in 49 BC, which was considered an act of insurrection. Because the course of the river has changed much since then, it is impossible to confirm exactly where the Rubicon flowed when Caesar and his legions crossed it.
During the Roman republic, the river Rubicon marked the boundary between the Roman province of Cisalpine Gaul to the north-east and Italy proper (controlled directly by Rome and its socii (allies)) to the south. On the north-western side, the border was marked by the river Arno, a much wider and important waterway, which flows westwide from the Apennine Mountains (its source is not far from Rubicon's source) into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Governors of Roman provinces were appointed promagistrates with imperium (roughly, "right to command") in their province(s). The governor would then serve as the general of the Roman army within the territory of his province(s). Roman law specified that only the elected magistrates (consuls and praetors) could hold imperium within Italy. Any promagistrate who entered Italy at the head of his troops forfeited his imperium and was therefore no longer legally allowed to command troops.

The night before our 2010 Project-JK Rockin Rubicon Trail Run, I asked my friend Tom why he wanted to run this trail and he casually responded that "if you want to be an accomplished four wheeler, there are a few places in this world you have to go and one is the Rubicon." Crossing through the El Dorado National Forest up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Rubicon Trail is truly one of the most beautiful ones I've been on bar none. Of course, its unrelenting 22 miles of boulders that need to be crawled, steep ledges that need to be climbed, narrow trees that need to be squeezed between, deep muddy water crossings that need to be forded and tippy off camber terrain that needs to be carefully negotiated is ultimately what makes the Rubicon Trail so legendary and famous around the world.
Originally made as a single half hour video, RUBICON : A Legendary Jeep Trail & Off-Road Adventure has been broken down into a 3 part series, each approximately 10 minutes long and so that it could be broadcasted on YouTube. Originally made as a single half hour video, RUBICON : A Legendary Jeep Trail & Off-Road Adventure was broken down into a 3 part series, each approximately 10 minutes long and done so that it could be broadcasted on YouTube. In episode 2, we pick-up the pieces of Inyo-JK's Jeep, brush off the dust and continue our trek to Rubicon Springs. Approximately 100 feet in length and filled with enormous boulders that offer little in the way of traction, the Little Sluice has stood for decades as being the premier obstacle on the world famous Rubicon Trail. Unfortunately, as of Friday, September 28, 2012, it will also cease to exist as we've come to know, love, respect and fear it. In spite of significant efforts made over the last 2 years by organizations such as The Rubicon Trail Foundation and Friends of the Rubicon to prevent this from happening, El Dorado County Supervisors have decided to proceed with their plans to break up many of the boulders within the Little Sluice and level out the rest with tons of fill rock that'll be flown in by helicopter.
With this knowledge in hand, Mel Wade of Off Road Evolution asked us to join him on the Rubicon Trail to give this iconic obstacle, one final run. And, on Saturday, September 22, 2012, that's exactly what he did, completely unassisted and in the very same 4-door Jeep JK Wrangler that he used to conquer it 3 years before. In this short video, you will get to see raw footage of his run with limited edits and no music so that you can get the full experience of just how challenging the Little Sluice really was.

By connecting the campers positive wire to the positive terminal on one battery and connecting the campers ground wire to the negative terminal on the second battery, Randy illustrates the correct way to achieve equal battery drain and how to ensure top notch battery life. Rather than a single battery connection where you will be required to replace it with a fresh battery, a dual connection alleviates this procedure and provide more even use of battery life.
With the use of jumper wires (one for both positive and negative as Randy explains) that are equal or greater to the gauge of wire found on your camper, connect each line to the corresponding positive and negative battery to complete the connection and enjoy some extended dry camping.

The reason Perry's squadron chose to anchor off of the Uraga Harbor is because
until then, marine charts did not exist beyond that location. Foreign ships had
never ventured farther than Uraga because of an order of by the Edo Shogunate to
repel any foreign ships that trespassed the line stretching from Kannonzaki in
Yokosuka to Futtsu in Chiba Prefecture.
Perry felt that in order to facilitate effective negotiations he must anchor as
close to Edo as possible. The day after their arrival, he began to survey the area
near Uraga using small bateira boats. On the bow of the survey boats were white
flags, and on the stern were U.S. Navy flags. The Uraga Magistrate's Office inquired about the meaning of the white flags and were told that they were a sign of peace. Surveys were conducted every day except Sunday. On July 11, the survey boats proceeded into the waters beyond Kannonzaki and Hashirimizu, a crucial defense point for the Shogunate Government. For Perry as well, the success of the expedition depended on whether this line could be crossed or not. For this reason, Perry named the area around Hatayamazaki Point in Hashirimizu"Point Rubicon,"in reference to the Rubicon River, the breaking point of Caesar's victory in conquering Rome. He also named the Island of Sarushima, which was visible in the distance, "Perry Island." The surveys were conducted up to a point off Haneda, with detailed reports of the depths and
conditions of the seabed.
