Paul Agnew
Paul Agnew (born 1964 in Glasgow) is a Scottish operatic tenor.
Agnew read music as a Choral Scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford. He became associated with various groups specialising in early music (the Consort of Musicke, the Tallis Scholars, the Sixteen and the Gothic Voices) before embarking on a solo career in the early 1990s.
He is well-known for singing high tenor roles in French repertoire, although he has had success in other types of music. Closely associated with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, Paul Agnew has performed the roles of Jason in Charpentier's Médée and of Hippolyte in Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie, as well as appearing on the recordings of La descente d'Orphée aux enfers and Les plaisirs de Versailles, both by Marc-Antoine Charpentier; Acis and Galatea by George Frideric Handel, and Rameau's Grands Motets (Gramophone's Best Early Music Vocal award in 1995).
Paul Agnew's other recordings include Mozart's Coronation Mass, Bach cantatas and Bach's Mass in B minor with Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, Bach's St John Passion with Stephen Cleobury (also on video), Bach's St Markus Passion with Roy Goodman, Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ with Philippe Herreweghe, Handel's Solomon with Paul McCreesh, Bach's Christmas Oratorio with Philip Pickett and Rameau's Dardanus with Pinchgut Opera. He has played the title travesti role in Rameau's Platée, which has been released on DVD.

Les Arts Florissants (ensemble)
Les Arts Florissants is a Baroque musical ensemble in residence at the Théâtre de Caen in Caen, France. The organization was founded by conductor William Christie in 1979. The ensemble derives its name from the 1685 opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The organization consists of a chamber orchestra of period instruments and a small vocal ensemble. Current notable members include soprano Danielle de Niese and tenor Paul Agnew, who has served as assistant conductor since 2007. Jonathan Cohen is also on the conducting staff. Christie remains the organization's Artistic Director.

Ceux qui suivent de près Les Arts Florissants savent que depuis trois ans déjà, leur directeur musical adjoint, Paul Agnew, a embarqué la formation fondée en 1979 par William Christie dans une superbe et pharaonique intégrale des 161 madrigaux de Monteverdi. Aujourd’hui, dans la continuité des concerts donnés par l’ensemble, le projet est gravé dans la cire ! Ceux qui suivent de près Les Arts Florissants savent que depuis trois ans déjà, leur directeur musical adjoint, Paul Agnew, a embarqué la formation fondée en 1979 par William Christie dans une superbe et pharaonique intégrale des 161 madrigaux de Monteverdi. Aujourd’hui, dans la continuité des concerts donnés par l’ensemble, le projet est gravé dans la cire ! Et le premier des trois volumes discographiques vient de paraitre sur le label des Arts Florissants. Au disque, Agnew a opté pour une sélection de madrigaux (et non une intégrale) qu’il a regroupés selon les villes où vécut le compositeur : Crémone (Vol. 1, extraits des Livres I, II et II), Mantoue (Vol. 2, extraits des Livres IV, V et VI) et Venise (Vol. 3, extraits des Livres VII et VIII). C’est le second volume, "Mantova", qui parait aujourd’hui en premier avec, entre autre, des extraits du fameux Livre VI, souvent considéré comme un chef d’œuvre du début à la fin, et représenté ici par les deux grands lamentos qui dominent l’ouvrage : le "Lamento d’Arianna" et la "Sestina". Comme pour chacun de ses disques, le label des Arts Florissants associe à l’enregistrement une œuvre inédite, spécialement commandée à un écrivain. Ici, René de Ceccatty donne aux madrigaux une résonance contemporaine singulière avec sa nouvelle intitulée "La Sibylle et la fresque des illusions"… Pour célébrer cette sortie, les Arts Flo étaient à Venise il y a quelques jours, invités par le Festival Monteverdi Vivaldi 2014, pour un concert donné dans le cadre magnifique de la Scuola Grande di San Rocco « tapissée » de chefs d’œuvres signés Bellini, Giorgione, Titien et surtout Tintoret… Pour Qobuz, Paul Agnew revient sur ce projet Monteverdi et René de Ceccatty évoque la nouvelle qu’il a écrite à cette occasion.

Les Arts Florissants / Paul Agnew : rencontre à Venise autour de Monteverdi
Ceux qui suivent de près Les Arts Florissants savent que depuis trois ans déjà, leur directeur musical adjoint, Paul Agnew, a embarqué la formation fondée en 1979 par William Christie dans une superbe et pharaonique intégrale des 161 madrigaux de Monteverdi. Aujourd’hui, dans la continuité des concerts donnés par l’ensemble, le projet est gravé dans la cire ! Et le premier des trois volumes discographiques vient de paraitre sur le label des Arts Florissants. Ceux qui suivent de près Les Arts Florissants savent que depuis trois ans déjà, leur directeur musical adjoint, Paul Agnew, a embarqué la formation fondée en 1979 par William Christie dans une superbe et pharaonique intégrale des 161 madrigaux de Monteverdi. Aujourd’hui, dans la continuité des concerts donnés par l’ensemble, le projet est gravé dans la cire ! Et le premier des trois volumes discographiques vient de paraitre sur le label des Arts Florissants. Au disque, Agnew a opté pour une sélection de madrigaux (et non une intégrale) qu’il a regroupés selon les villes où vécut le compositeur : Crémone (Vol. 1, extraits des Livres I, II et II), Mantoue (Vol. 2, extraits des Livres IV, V et VI) et Venise (Vol. 3, extraits des Livres VII et VIII). C’est le second volume, "Mantova", qui parait aujourd’hui en premier avec, entre autre, des extraits du fameux Livre VI, souvent considéré comme un chef d’œuvre du début à la fin, et représenté ici par les deux grands lamentos qui dominent l’ouvrage : le "Lamento d’Arianna" et la "Sestina". Comme pour chacun de ses disques, le label des Arts Florissants associe à l’enregistrement une œuvre inédite, spécialement commandée à un écrivain. Ici, René de Ceccatty donne aux madrigaux une résonance contemporaine singulière avec sa nouvelle intitulée "La Sibylle et la fresque des illusions"… Pour célébrer cette sortie, les Arts Flo étaient à Venise il y a quelques jours, invités par le Festival Monteverdi Vivaldi 2014, pour un concert donné dans le cadre magnifique de la Scuola Grande di San Rocco « tapissée » de chefs d’œuvres signés Bellini, Giorgione, Titien et surtout Tintoret… Pour Qobuz, Paul Agnew revient sur ce projet Monteverdi et René de Ceccatty évoque la nouvelle qu’il a écrite à cette occasion.
