Nuclear Energy (sculpture)
Nuclear Energy is a bronze sculpture by Henry Moore that is located on the campus of the University of Chicago at the site of world's first nuclear reactor, Chicago Pile-1.
Location
It is located on Ellis Avenue, between the Max Palevsky West dormitory and the Mansueto Library. This site is located in the Hyde Park community area of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The location commemorates the exact location where the Manhattan Project team devised the first nuclear reactor to produce the first self-sustaining controlled nuclear reaction under the former stands of Stagg Field.
History
The sculpture was commissioned by the B. F. Ferguson monument fund.
The sculpture is described as 14.0 feet (4.3 m) in height and 8 feet (2.4 m) in diameter by the Smithsonian Institution and it sits atop a base that is 1.5 feet (0.46 m) in height and 10 feet (3.0 m) in diameter. However, the University of Chicago says it is only 12 feet (3.7 m) in height. The Henry Moore Foundation lists its height at 3.66m. The sculpture reminds some of the human skull, while it reminds others of an atomic mushroom cloud.

Nuclear energy has been quietly powering America with clean, carbon-free electricity for the last 60 years.
It may not be the first thing you think of when you heat or cool your home, but maybe that’s the point.
It’s been so reliable that we sometimes take it for granted.
Did you know about a fifth of the country’s electricity comes from nuclear power each year?
If not, then it’s about time you get to know nuclear.
Nuclear energy provided 55% of America’s carbon-free electricity in 2018, making it by far the largest domestic source of clean energy.
Nuclear power plants do not emit greenhouse gases while generating electricity.
They produce power by boiling water to create steam that spins a turbine. The water is heated by a process called fission, which makes heat by splitting apart uranium atoms inside a nuclear reactor core.
Nuclear power plants operated at full capacity more than 92% of the time in 2018—making it the most reliable energy source in America. That’s about 1.5 to 2 times more reliable as natural gas (58%) and coal (54%) plants, and roughly 2.5 to 3.5 times more reliable than wind (37%) and solar (26%) plants.
Nuclear power plants are designed to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week because they require less maintenance and can operate for longer stretches before refueling (typically every 1.5 or 2 years).

Seventy-five years ago, the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction took place on the campus of the University of Chicago. Fifty years ago, a bronze by Henry Moore was erected to mark the site, a work known by its owners as "Nuclear Energy." On 02 December 1942, the world changed forever when 50 scientists with several Nobel Prizes among them stood on a balcony over a cold and damp squash court inside an abandoned football stadium and watched the instruments record the first sustained nuclear chain reaction. Nuclear energy has been quietly powering America with clean, carbon-free electricity for the last 60 years.
It may not be the first thing you think of when you heat or cool your home, but maybe that’s the point.
It’s been so reliable that we sometimes take it for granted.
Did you know about a fifth of the country’s electricity comes from nuclear power each year?
If not, then it’s about time you get to know nuclear.
Nuclear energy provided 55% of America’s carbon-free electricity in 2018, making it by far the largest domestic source of clean energy.
Nuclear power plants do not emit greenhouse gases while generating electricity.
They produce power by boiling water to create steam that spins a turbine. The water is heated by a process called fission, which makes heat by splitting apart uranium atoms inside a nuclear reactor core.
Nuclear power plants operated at full capacity more than 92% of the time in 2018—making it the most reliable energy source in America. That’s about 1.5 to 2 times more reliable as natural gas (58%) and coal (54%) plants, and roughly 2.5 to 3.5 times more reliable than wind (37%) and solar (26%) plants.
Nuclear power plants are designed to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week because they require less maintenance and can operate for longer stretches before refueling (typically every 1.5 or 2 years).

Lecture | War, Peace, and Moore’s “Atom Piece”

Seventy-five years ago, the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction took place on the campus of the University of Chicago. Fifty years ago, a bronze by Henry Moore was erected to mark the site, a work known by its owners as "Nuclear Energy." The artist himself called it "Atom Piece," suggesting an alternative reading of the atom’s unleashed force. Both interpretations are still visible today, present in the sculpture, the process by which it was made, and the explosive tensions it seems to keep in balance.
Anne Wagner (Class of 1936 Professor Emerita, University of California, Berkeley) delivers this lecture, which is supported by the Rhoda Pritzker Fund for Lectures on Modern British Art.

On 02 December 1942, the world changed forever when 50 scientists with several Nobel Prizes among them stood on a balcony over a cold and damp squash court inside an abandoned football stadium and watched the instruments record the first sustained nuclear chain reaction. The atomic age was born, and in less than three years from the experiment at the University of Chicago that generated less than a Watt of electricity, the first atomic bomb exploded over Hiroshima, Japan, devastating the city.
In this video, we will look at the background and development of the Chicago Pile-1, the first nuclear reactor in history, including the roles played by Enrico Fermi and Leo Szilard, and even a cameo by Albert Einstein. Finally, we'll visit the location of the reactor's final resting place that you can visit in a Chicago nature preserve.
