Mikko Möttönen (QCD Labs, Aalto University) and Prof. David Hall (Hall
Labs, Amherst College). The knots are tied in a Bose-Einstein
condensate (BEC) that is an atomic gas with superfluid properties. The
created structure realizes the celebrated Hopf fibration for the first
time in the context of quantum physics and quantum mechanics. This
type of knot formed in a quantum gas is also referred to as a knot
soliton.

Aalto University (Finnish: Aalto-yliopisto, Swedish: Aalto-universitetet) is a Finnish university established on January 1, 2010, as a result of merging the Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki.
Aalto University aims to create a new science and arts community by bringing together three existing universities of technology, economics and art.
In 2004, a workgroup led by Anne Brunila of the Finnish Ministry of Finance concluded that Finland had too many universities and other institutes of tertiary education which should be consolidated. Following this, Yrjö Sotamaa, president of the University of Art and Design Helsinki at the time, proposed the merger of Aalto University's founding schools in his president's opening speech in 2005. Sotamaa's line of reasoning was that this move would create a unique interdisciplinary university that was needed to create new innovative thought.[citation needed]
The idea received attention within the Finnish Ministry of Education, which appointed Raimo Sailas, a leading official at the Ministry of Finance, to investigate the possibility of a merger. After Sailas' group reported that it considered the merger to be beneficial to the Finnish academic world and economy, the Finnish government decided to go on with the project on November 11, 2007.

Linus Benedict Torvalds (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈliːn.ɵs ˈtuːr.valds] (
listen); born December 28, 1969 in Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish Americansoftware engineer and hacker, best known for having initiated the development of the open source Linux kernel. He later became the chief architect of the Linux kernel, and now acts as the project's coordinator. He also created the revision control system Git. He was honored (shared with Dr Shinya Yamanaka) with the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize by the Technology Academy Finland "in recognition of his creation of a new open source operating system for computers leading to the widely used Linux kernel".
Torvalds was born in Helsinki, Finland. He is the son of journalists Anna and Nils Torvalds, and the grandson of poet Ole Torvalds. Both of his parents were campus radicals at the University of Helsinki in the 1960s. His family belongs to the Swedish-speaking minority (5.5% of Finland's population). Torvalds was named after Linus Pauling, the American Nobel Prize-winning chemist, although in the book Rebel Code: Linux and the Open Source Revolution, Torvalds is quoted as saying, "I think I was named equally for Linus the Peanuts cartoon character", noting that this makes him half "Nobel-prize-winning chemist" and half "blanket-carrying cartoon character".

Spotlights Skim Reading - Aalto University Research
Spotlights: Attention-Optimised Highlights for Skim Reading The paper contributes a novel technique that can improve user performance in skim reading. Users typically use a continuous-rate-based scrolling technique to skim works such as longer Web pages, e-books, and PDF files. However, visual attention is compromised at higher scrolling rates because of motion blur and extraneous objects with overly brief exposure times. In response, we present Spotlights. It complements the regular continuous technique at high speeds (2–20 pages/s). Ultra-High Field MRI: Transition to Human 7T in Finland
In October 2015, the world leaders in ultra-high field (UHF) human magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), gathered in a workshop organized by Aalto University to present their research and discuss the advantages, challenges and future of UHF MRI in Finland. The resulting statement from one of the symposium highlights, a panel discussion, was unanimous: Finland needs a human UHF MRI scanner in order to stay in the front line of basic and clinical research in neuroscience. -

The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

Stately, angular and unmistakably Modernist, this striking building serves as Helsinki's main conference and concert venue, and is the current home of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, founded by Robert Kajanus in 1882. If you are unable to visit for a performance, guided tours are offered on fixed dates (see the website for details).

Located opposite Finlandia Hall, about 10 minutes' walk from Helsinki's city centre, this museum contains rich archaeological and ethnographic collections depicting Finnish life from the earliest times to the present day. The sections on prehistoric Finland and the culture of the Sami people of Lapland are particularly interesting, and the museum building, constructed in 1916, is a Helsinki landmark. Senaatintori (Senate Square)
Dating back to the first half of the 19th century, Helsinki's neoclassical heart was constructed by German architect Carl Ludvig Engel, who was also the official architect of Tallinn in Estonia. Engel was heavily influenced by the architecture of St Petersburg, and the Senaatintori has been used as a stand-in for St Petersburg in numerous Cold War espionage films, including Gorky Park (1983), Reds (1981) and White Nights (1985). Facing a statue of Tsar Alexander II, the white-domed Tuomiokirkko is flanked by the grand neoclassical facades of the Government Palace, Helsinki University, Helsinki Cathedral and the National Library of Finland.

Suomenlinna (Sea Fortress)
About 1.5km (1 mile) offshore from Eteläsatama harbour, the sea fortress of Suomenlinna was once the bastion of the Swedish empire, with a larger population than Helsinki itself. Founded in 1748 to protect the coast from Russian attack, the fortress island was finally surrendered to Russia in 1808. This superb fortification was one of the main reasons why the Russians moved the capital from Turku to Helsinki in 1812. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the fortress buildings contain the Suomenlinna Museum, the Ehrensvärd Museum, the multimedia Suomenlinna Experience, the Suomenlinna Toy Museum, the Military Museum's Manege, the Customs Museum and the WWI-era Submarine Vesikko, amongst other attractions, restaurants and bars. Despite the looming cannons, the rest of the island is a peaceful green haven, and locals flock here for summer picnics. During the summer months, there are daily guided tours around Suomenlinna in English, Swedish and Finnish. In the winter there are tours in English during the weekends. Helsinki City Transport runs regular ferries to Suomenlinna from Kauppatori (free with a Helsinki Card, journey time - 15 minutes). JT-Lines runs a waterbus service on the same route from May to mid-September.

Suomenlinna (Sea Fortress)
About 1.5km (1 mile) offshore from Eteläsatama harbour, the sea fortress of Suomenlinna was once the bastion of the Swedish empire, with a larger population than Helsinki itself. Founded in 1748 to protect the coast from Russian attack, the fortress island was finally surrendered to Russia in 1808. This superb fortification was one of the main reasons why the Russians moved the capital from Turku to Helsinki in 1812. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the fortress buildings contain the Suomenlinna Museum, the Ehrensvärd Museum, the multimedia Suomenlinna Experience, the Suomenlinna Toy Museum, the Military Museum's Manege, the Customs Museum and the WWI-era Submarine Vesikko, amongst other attractions, restaurants and bars. Despite the looming cannons, the rest of the island is a peaceful green haven, and locals flock here for summer picnics. During the summer months, there are daily guided tours around Suomenlinna in English, Swedish and Finnish. In the winter there are tours in English during the weekends. Helsinki City Transport runs regular ferries to Suomenlinna from Kauppatori (free with a Helsinki Card, journey time - 15 minutes). JT-Lines runs a waterbus service on the same route from May to mid-September.

Lantern Park is a light extravaganza that grows larger with each passing year. It embraces the wintry park as night falls, enhancing and extending the atmosphere created by the park's own lighting. This year the installation involves nearly 150 lanterns reaching from the National Opera all the way to the Hakasalmi Villa. The lanterns provide their light all through the night.

This course covers all public funding mechanism in Finland, and concentrates in depth on Tekes application. You will learn how to:
* Crystallize your idea
* Make it compatible with Need, Action, Benefit, Cost structure
* Create a Project plan, even if you never did project management
* Make a business plan and cash flow estimate
* Present your application successfully
* Submit cost report and project status updates
As a course participant you will also get access to template files for Project plan, Work Breakdown, Cost and Cashflow plans.
Course is lead by founders of Eliademy, which was created with support from Tekes.
