Salzburg Cathedral (German: Salzburger Dom) is the seventeenth-century Baroque cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Salzburg in the city of Salzburg, Austria, dedicated to Saint Rupert and Saint Vergilius. Saint Rupert founded the church in 774 on the remnants of a Roman town, the cathedral was rebuilt in 1181 after a fire. In the seventeenth century, the cathedral was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style under Prince-Bishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau to its present appearance. Salzburg Cathedral still contains the baptismal font in which composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptized.
Saint Vergilius of Salzburg constructed the first cathedral possibly using the foundations of St. Rupert. The first Dom was recorded in 774. The so-called Virgil Dom was built from 767 to 774 and was 66 metres long and 33 metres wide.
Archbishop Arno (785 – 821) arranged the first renovations of the Dom, less than 70 years after its completion. In 842, the building burned after alightning strike. Three years later, work began to rebuild the structure.
Salzburg (German pronunciation: [ˈzaltsbʊɐ̯k];Bavarian: Såizburg; literally: "Salt Fortress") is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg.
Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) is internationally renowned for its baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city has three universities and a large population of students. Tourists also frequent the city to tour the city's historic center and the scenic Alpine surroundings.
Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the mid‑20th century, the city was the setting for the musical play and film The Sound of Music.
Traces of human settlements have been found in the area, dating to the Neolithic Age. The first settlements in Salzburg continuous with the present were apparently by the Celts around the 5th century BC.
Around 15 BC the separate settlements were merged into one city by the Roman Empire. At this time, the city was called "Juvavum" and was awarded the status of a Roman municipium in 45 AD. Juvavum developed into an important town of the Roman province of Noricum. After the collapse of the Norican frontier, Juvavum declined so sharply that by the late 7th century it nearly became a ruin.
"Silent Night" (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. The song has been recorded by a large number of singers from every music genre. The version sung by Bing Crosby is the third best-selling single of all-time.
The song was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818 at St Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in the Austrian Empire on the Salzach river in present-day Austria. A young priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had come to Oberndorf the year before. He had already written the lyrics of the song "Stille Nacht" in 1816 at Mariapfarr, the hometown of his father in the Salzburg Lungau region, where Joseph had worked as a coadjutor.
The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. Before Christmas Eve, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for the church service. Both performed the carol during the mass on the night of December 24.
A cathedral (French: cathédrale from Latin: cathedra, "seat" from the Greek kathedra (καθέδρα), seat, bench, from kata "down" + hedra seat, base, chair) is a Christian church which contains the seat of a bishop, thus serving as the central church of a diocese, conference, or episcopate. The counterpart term for such a church in German is Dom from Latin domus ecclesiae or domus episcopalis; also Italian Duomo, Dutch Domkerk and cognates in many other European languages. Churches with the function of "cathedral" are usually specific to those Christian denominations with an episcopal hierarchy, such as the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and some Lutheran and Methodist churches. Church buildings embodying the functions of a cathedral first appear in Italy, Gaul, Spain and North Africa in the 4th century, but cathedrals did not become universal within the Western Catholic Church until the 12th century, by which time they had developed architectural forms, institutional structures and legal identities distinct from parish churches, monastic churches and episcopal residences.

The Salzburg Cathedral was one of the first Baroque buildings to be built north of the Alps. It was consecrated in 1628 during the Thirty Year's War. Experts differ on why it was built. Some believe it was to emphasize Salzburg's commitment to the Roman Catholic church. Others believe it was to show that there could be a peaceful alternative to the religious strife that was spreading across Europe at the time. Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich was technically at the top of the papal offices in the north of the Alps, but the city managed to steer clear of the religious war. With its rich salt production at Hallein, it had enough money to stay out of the conflict and carefully maintain its independence. In 1959, a partial reconstruction was completed after a World War II bomb destroyed the ...

The Missa Solemnis in C major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, K. 337, written in 1780, was Mozart's last complete mass.It is scored for soloists, choir, two oboes, two bassoons, two trumpets, three trombones, strings (without violas) and organ. The Benedictus is unusual for Mozart's mass settings in that it is an austere fugue in an archaic style. We found this the most difficult part to sing. Our choir joined with a number of other choirs to sing this mass on Sunday morning (July 6th 2014) in the Salzburg Cathedral, where it was first performed. As we were at the top of the cathedral around the organ the congregation could not see us, but hopefully this video will give some idea of the great experience we had singing this mass in this venue. You can see a playlist of the choir's tour of Au...

A video with pictures and video I took while I visited Salzburg, Austria back in 2010. A city that's known for the filming location for such movies like "Sound of Music" and "Knight and Day" (filming production just wrapped up when I arrived there), it has a charming old world and very European type of feel to it. I spent some time shopping at the local gift shops, ski slopes, and restaurants . Luckily I didn't go Baroque...or did I? Ba-dum-tiss. The pictures I took of "The Sound of Music" filming locations include Mirabell Palace, Nonnberg Abbey, and "Felsenreitschule." Mozart's birthplace is there, as well "Kehlsteinhaus" (Hitler's "Eagles Nest" near Berchtesgaden, Germany). Inside Salzburg Cathedral is shown and there's also a clip of me attempting to snowboard. Yea...I still hav...
