Van's Aircraft
Van's Aircraft is an American kit aircraft manufacturer, founded by Richard "Van" VanGrunsven in 1973.
Van's RV series of aircraft, from the single-seat RV-3 to the latest RV-14, are all-aluminum, low-wing monoplanes of monocoque construction. The RV series of airplanes has been extremely successful, and by the end of 2012, about 8000 RV kits had been completed and flown, and thousands more are under construction. Completion rates currently average about 1.5 per day, making the series one of the most numerous of all homebuilt aircraft. They feature responsive controls plus both good speed and fuel economy. In 2013, the company announced it would begin selling some assembled aircraft as well on a limited basis.
Van's factory is located at Aurora State Airport, Oregon. This airport is the location of an annual fly-in for Van's aircraft owners.
Regulatory status
RVs are deemed Experimental - amateur-builts by the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States and are accepted under the corresponding category by the aviation authorities in many other countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. A modified version of the RV-6 was sold to the Nigerian government as a kit-assembled military trainer.

Fatal crash of Van's RV-8 (N138PM) near Tehachapi Airport (TSP/KTSP), California, on July 24, 2020.
On July 24, 2020, about 1159 Pacific daylight time, a Vans RV-8, N138PM, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Tehachapi Airport (TSP), Tehachapi, California. The private pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 personal flight. Witnesses reported that the accident airplane made a straight-in approach to land. The airplane touched down onto the runway tailwheel first and oscillated between its tailwheel and main landing gear several times. It then tipped up onto the left main gear and turned toward the right edge of the runway surface. The pilot initiated an aborted landing and according to a witness, the airplane lifted off quickly but made a "perceivably slow" turn to a left crosswind. The n...

Van's Aircraft Chapter 11, Order Modification, and Policy Changes
A small breakdown of the recent filings and hearings regarding the reorganization at Van's Aircraft and how it affects my build. In short, the adjustments being made, allowed by the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection hearing and resulting orders, will adjust the timeline, cost, and risk of many people's builds--mine included. Despite the unfortunate and complex aspects of obtaining kits and parts during these times, I'll likely be able to continue the build without much interruption. My intended powerplant of a Lycoming IO360-M1B is still the preferred powerplant, though a pivot may be necessary if means obtaining an engine with mitigated risk, less wait, and if I can keep modifications and wasted expense down. On July 24, 2020, about 1159 Pacific daylight time, a Vans RV-8, N138PM, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Tehachapi Airport (TSP), Tehachapi, California. The private pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 personal flight.
Witnesses reported that the accident airplane made a straight-in approach to land. The airplane touched down onto the runway tailwheel first and oscillated between its tailwheel and main landing gear several times. It then tipped up onto the left main gear and turned toward the right edge of the runway surface. The pilot initiated an aborted landing and according to a witness, the airplane lifted off quickly but made a "perceivably slow" turn to a left crosswind. The nose of the airplane was "alarmingly" high, and the airplane did not appear to be accelerating. The left turn steepened as the airplane descended behind buildings in a nose-up attitude with the wings wobbling. The engine "cut out" and, almost immediately thereafter. they heard the impact.
The airframe and engine examination did not reveal any anomalies that would have precluded normal operation. Recorded data from the airplane was consistent with what the witnesses reported. The engine power never exceeded 67%, which is likely why the airplane did not appear to accelerate during the takeoff; however, this would not have resulted in the loss of control. Given the reported nose-high attitude and steep left turn, it is likely the pilot exceeded the airplane’s critical angle of attack and that it stalled at an altitude too low for the pilot to recover before it impacted the building.
Probable Cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain airspeed and his exceedance of the airplane’s critical angle of attack, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall at too low of an altitude to recover.

A small breakdown of the recent filings and hearings regarding the reorganization at Van's Aircraft and how it affects my build.
In short, the adjustments being made, allowed by the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection hearing and resulting orders, will adjust the timeline, cost, and risk of many people's builds--mine included.
Despite the unfortunate and complex aspects of obtaining kits and parts during these times, I'll likely be able to continue the build without much interruption.
My intended powerplant of a Lycoming IO360-M1B is still the preferred powerplant, though a pivot may be necessary if means obtaining an engine with mitigated risk, less wait, and if I can keep modifications and wasted expense down.

The airframe and engine examination did not reveal any anomalies that would have precluded normal operation. Recorded data from the airplane was consistent with what the witnesses reported. The engine power never exceeded 67%, which is likely why the airplane did not appear to accelerate during the takeoff; however, this would not have resulted in the loss of control. Given the reported nose-high attitude and steep left turn, it is likely the pilot exceeded the airplane’s critical angle of attack and that it stalled at an altitude too low for the pilot to recover before it impacted the building.
Probable Cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain airspeed and his exceedance of the airplane’s critical angle of attack, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall at too low of an altitude to recover.

A small breakdown of the recent filings and hearings regarding the reorganization at Van's Aircraft and how it affects my build.
In short, the adjustments being made, allowed by the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection hearing and resulting orders, will adjust the timeline, cost, and risk of many people's builds--mine included.
Despite the unfortunate and complex aspects of obtaining kits and parts during these times, I'll likely be able to continue the build without much interruption.
My intended powerplant of a Lycoming IO360-M1B is still the preferred powerplant, though a pivot may be necessary if means obtaining an engine with mitigated risk, less wait, and if I can keep modifications and wasted expense down.

My name is Brett Myers and I live in Lubbock, TX. I'm a finance professor at Texas Tech University (with a background in Mechanical Engineering). I'm currently building a Van's RV10 in my garage. It's kind of like an airplane that you buy from Ikea, and I'm sure it will work just fine. Van's Aircraft is probably the largest provider of kit airplanes on the market.
I am not affiliated in any way with Van's Aircraft. I'm posting these videos primarily for my own documentation and enjoyment as well as a desire to keep my extended family in the loop with what I am doing. They are for entertainment purposes only and shouldn't be used as a source for building advice or tips. Again, I am a finance professor. Van's Aircraft
Van's Aircraft is an American kit aircraft manufacturer, founded by Richard "Van" VanGrunsven in 1973.
Van's RV series of aircraft, from the single-seat RV-3 to the latest RV-14, are all-aluminum, low-wing monoplanes of monocoque construction. The RV series of airplanes has been extremely successful, and by the end of 2012, about 8000 RV kits had been completed and flown, and thousands more are under construction. Completion rates currently average about 1.5 per day, making the series one of the most numerous of all homebuilt aircraft. They feature responsive controls plus both good speed and fuel economy. In 2013, the company announced it would begin selling some assembled aircraft as well on a limited basis.
Van's factory is located at Aurora State Airport, Oregon. This airport is the location of an annual fly-in for Van's aircraft owners.
Regulatory status
RVs are deemed Experimental - amateur-builts by the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States and are accepted under the corresponding category by the aviation authorities in many other countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. A modified version of the RV-6 was sold to the Nigerian government as a kit-assembled military trainer.
