The Certified Financial Planner examination, or CFP exam for short, is designed to assess your knowledge of financial planning and to see how well you can apply that knowledge to real life situations. The CFP exam consists of 170 multiple choice questions and is administered over the course of two 3-hour sessions, broken up by a 40-minute break. There are 8 major domains of content on the exam, which include: Establishing and Defining the Client-Planner Relationship; Gathering Information Necessary to Fulfill the Engagement; Analyzing and Evaluating the Client’s Current Financial Status; Developing the Recommendation; Communicating the Recommendation; Implementing the Recommendation; Monitoring the Recommendation; and Practicing within Professional and Regulatory Standards. The exam is only provided in a computer-based testing format during three 5-day testing windows each year; the three windows fall during the months of March, July, and November.
