Touchscreen display

New — A touchscreen interface makes it easier to use features such as X-Ray, Goodreads, built-in dictionary, highlighting and more. And with a glare-free screen that looks like real paper, you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room.

Lighter than a paperback

Kindle is lighter than most paperback books, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand for extended periods of time.

Weeks-long battery life

Kindle does not require power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for weeks on a single charge.

Easy on the eyes

Every time your eyes switch from a bright screen to a dimmer, ambient room, your eyes have to adjust, which may result in fatigue. With Kindle, the page is the same brightness as everything else in the room, so no adjustment is needed.

Reads like the printed page

Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp text similar to what you see in a physical book. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving image quality.

Every Kindle E-reader...

Sharp, dark text

Enjoy text that reads like the printed page. All fonts have been hand-tuned at the pixel level for maximum readability and comfort.

Flip through without losing your place

With Page Flip, you can skim page-by-page, scan by chapter or skip to the end for a sneak peek without losing your place.

Take and share notes

Add margin notes that you can edit, delete or even export from your device to your computer. Share highlighted sections and meaningful quotes on Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads, and see passages frequently highlighted by other Kindle readers.

Read comfortably in one hand

Lighter than most paperback books, hold Kindle comfortably in one hand for long reading sessions.

No distractions

Kindle is purposely designed as a dedicated e-reader. Indulge your love of reading without interruptions such as e-mail alerts or push notifications.

TL:DR (Too Long Didn't Read) - Excellent quality, practical & portable (the whole reason you would buy one), exceptional battery life, vast online library available at the tip of your fingers. What are you waiting for, buy one!

For those of you who appreciate particularly lengthy in depth reviews, here goes...

As an avid reader during my years at University, I found that I simply couldn't afford both my endless demand for novels and educational reading, nor did I have the space in my 'room' (closet) to store them. Some would say that you just need a local library and you inadvertently nullify the need for a kindle....nah not really. Taking out books from the library require you to be particularly careful you don't rip any pages, only allow for one book to be read at any one time if you go out to read somewhere and most importantly, achey hands having to hold a ridiculously heavy book on page 795 of 1209... Admittedly the last point was important due to the fact I purchased (at a lower price than the actual book) educational books for my course, which not everyone would need to do.

This is actually my second Kindle, my first of which I bought at University and subsequently gave to my Dad. This newer model, I much prefer in matt black as opposed to the grey of my previous. The simple controls haven't changed but this model is noticeably smoother when navigating through the books as well as the online store.

BUILD QUALITY
Completely plastic. In this case, not a bad thing. Provided you don't tend to throw your books across the room when your favourite character is brutally killed off or you simply cannot wrap your head around a writer decisions of plot twists, you're good to go. The Kindle is extremely light (perfect for portability), and is durable.

I read the various reviews available for readers and the differing options, tablets & lights etc and I only wanted a kindle that I could read books on, wasnt bothered about lights and internet browsing (that would be a tablet then !) and didnt need it to feel like it had been hand made in silicon valley
this does exactly what I wanted it to do, its light and easy to use so if you are looking for a book reader that dosnt make tea or walk the dog but allows you to read books, this is the one for you - thoroughly recommnded

This is my first Kindle, and after reading many of the reviews I was concerned I may not have made the right choice. If, like me, you tend to read the negatives, let me just address some of the issues they brought up.
1. A reviewer mentioned that if you use a Virgin internet hub you cannot connect the Kindle. Wrong. I connected first time.
2. Many of the reviews (negative) say you can't read the screen in dull light. Wrong. It's cloudy and miserable here and I can see the screen perfectly. In fact, if I place my cardigan over the Kindle and myself I CAN STILL SEE THE SCREEN.
3. Touch screen over sensitive. Wrong. The touch screen is like any other. If users learned to keep their fingers out of the way then maybe they wouldn't keep flipping pages over when they don't need too.
4 The Kindle feels cheap. Yes, the casing is plastic, but it feels no different to my Acer Iconia android (except a whole lot lighter. :D )
5. On the cheaper version the ads are obtrusive. Adblock and Ublock on browsers have spoiled you haven't they? It is advertised this edition at £59.99 has offers. You bought it, your choice. There are no ads in the books, THAT IS WHAT'S IMPORTANT! And the ads are not in the way of anything.
Thank you Amazon for a delivery much sooner than expected. Thank you for a wonderful product. It's a crying shame people wish to bad mouth the Kindle when the it does what it says without any fuss.

This is my second ever model of kindle, having had one of the first kindles that was ever released. Having had two replacements for this when the screen started freezing, I thought I would have a go with a new model. Though the concept remains the same, things have moved on a bit since the first kindles!

The most obvious difference is the touch screen! As I am used to working touchscreen phones and tablets, this is a welcome addition for me. I really really like it. It makes navigation much easier and more intuative.

In use, the screen is perfect for reading from. It looks like a real book page. There isn't the unpleasant glare and brightness that I get when using the kindle app on my iPad. It is easy to read from and I would imagine that this reduces eyes train and headaches.

It seems that this new kindle turns the page quicker and more seamlessly than the older model. Everything about it just feels smoother and less clunky.

I've always been impressed with kindle battery life and although I haven't yet had the opportunity to wear the battery down, it should in theory last for weeks. I do an awful lot of reading and for me this is an important point.

Unlike some of the more expensive kindles, this model does not have a back light. But the kindles that do cost twice the amount of money, and my partner put his foot down!.... To be honest though I like reading in the evenings next to a lamp. Perhaps the light on the kindle itself is more for people who read in bed / at night without any lights on.

The kindle is able to tell you, based upon your average reading speed so far, how much longer you have to go until you complete the book that you are reading.
