Report.
Released from his role as supporter to Pavel Tonkov,
Italy's Daniele Nardello (Mapei-Quick Step) showed his form in the
Pyrenees today by claiming the stage win in a four-man sprint at
Val d'Aran. The last time
Nardello won a stage of the
Vuelta was in
1996, which was also a mountain stage
. In the GC, there was no change in overall position but race leader
Abraham Olano (Esp) ONCE-Deutsche Bank did lose 30 seconds did second- placed Jan Ullrich and Pavel Tonkov in third.
Olano finished alone with no
ONCE team-mates supporting him, some 7.28 behind the stage winner. Nardello covered the
201 km mountain stage in just over five hours at an average speed of almost 40 kmh, a fast stage for the Pyrenees.
Following him across the line were Victor Peña (Col) Vitalicio Seguros, Felix Garcia Casas (Spa) Lotus-Festina and José Uria Gonzalez (Spa) Kelme-Costa Blanca. "I was amazed at how quick the race was, both when we were in the main escape and also the final sprint when there was just four of us," Nardello said. Nardello, who'd been troubled by a knee injury in the earlier part of the Vuelta, said he was inspired by his name in white paint on the road and support from banners held by
Mapei team supporters. "I'd been hoping to win a stage because I came into the end of the season in
100 percent shape. Now
I've worked through the slight problem I had behind my left knee
I think I can do well in other stages." Although Mapei team leader Pavel Tonkov came home
22nd, nearly 7 minutes behind Nardello, he said "there are more difficult climbs to come so I am sure I can get even closer to Olano."
