New Strategies to Prevent Canine Posterior Capsule Opacification
In this CHF webinar Dr. Heather Chandler, DVM, PhD of The Ohio State University, College of Optometry, discusses new strategies to prevent canine posterior capsule opacification (PCO). PCO is a common complication of cataract surgery. Lens cells left behind after surgery migrate and proliferate, resulting in an interference with light transmission and secondary vision loss. Dr. Chandler is working on the development of novel therapies to reduce PCO formation, including surgical and pharmaceutical interventions. Dr. Chandler will also discuss potential intraocular drug delivery options to prevent PCO.

Genetics 101 For Dog Breeders
In this CHF webinar Dr. Danika Bannasch, DVM, PhD of the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, discusses the major advances that have been made in our understanding of the molecular basis for inherited diseases in dogs. These advances, in the form of DNA based tests for breeding animals have changed that way breeders make breeding decisions. During the webinar Dr. Bannasch will discuss the basics of dog genetics, the different modes of inheritance or how genetic traits and diseases are transmitted from one generation to the next and the exceptions to the basic modes of inheritance.

Canine Hemangiosarcoma: How Much Do We Really Know and When Will We Find a Cure?
The Modiano Lab at the University of Minnesota is implementing a comprehensive approach to beat canine hemangiosarcoma. This includes development of new therapies to help dogs that develop the disease today, as well as new methods for prevention and control that will reduce the number of dogs that will develop hemangiosarcoma in the future. A better understanding of the disease has allowed us to make significant gains on both fronts of the battle against this aggressive tumor. Their progress has not gone unnoticed, allowing us to establish new collaborations that will similarly help human patients with angiosarcoma.

Introduction to the Center for Pet Safety
In this webinar we hear from Lindsey A. Wolko, founder, CEO and Chairman of the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a non-profit research and advocacy organization dedicated to companion animal and consumer safety. CPS uses scientific testing and federal motor vehicle safety standard specifications to study pet products, establish criteria to test protocols, and measure whether pet safety products provide the protection claimed by advocates and intended by the manufacturer. Lindsey will be discussing CPS’ mission and the studies they are undertaking to make travel and recreation safer for pets and their human companions.

Baby Noses: Introducing Scents to Neonate Puppies
Our presenter for this webinar is Dr. Gayle Watkins. Gayle has been breeding Golden Retrievers and competing in a wide array of dog events--conformation, agility, obedience, tracking, hunt tests and field trials--for nearly 30 years.
During these decades, she has produced, owned and/or shown over 50 American and Canadian conformation, obedience, agility, tracking and rally champions, as well as Master Hunter and Qualified All-Age field trial Goldens.
Gayle’s focus is on using science in her puppy rearing to produce healthy, stable, talented dogs. She brings her background as an Army officer, scientist, researcher, business owner and consultant to this goal. Most recently, she and two of her co-breeders started Avidog International to share these methods with other breeders and puppy owners. In this webinar, we are going to hear about one of the programs that they have been using in the breeding program for nearly a decade.

Bloat: What Every Dog Owner Needs to Know
In this webinar, Dr. Elizabeth Rozanski explains what every dog owner needs to know about gastric dilatation-volvulus, or bloat. She will present the signs and treatment options for bloat along with current options for prevention.
Dr. Elizabeth Rozanski is a board-certified specialist in emergency medicine and critical care and professor at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Rozanski graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992, completed an internship at the University of Minnesota, and then a residency in emergency and critical care at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Since 1996, she has worked at Tufts Veterinary School, where she directs the critical care service.
CHF-Funded Researcher at Auburn Developing New Bone Cancer Therapy
The AKC Canine Health Foundation has awarded Dr. Bruce Smith, director of the Auburn University Research Initiative in Cancer, a two-year grant totaling $118,848 to test a new therapy for treating bone cancer in dogs. The research could one day be broadened to include many other kinds of cancer—and possibly cancer in people. Video credit: Auburn University.
Regenerative Medicine to Treat Orthopedic Injuries in Dogs
In this 40-minute webinar,“Regenerative Medicine for Canine Orthopedic Concerns,” Dr. Sherman Canapp discusses the recent progress in the use of regenerative medicine to treat orthopedic injuries in dogs and also identifies areas where further research is needed.
Designed for both lay and scientific audiences, Dr. Canapp explains the different types of therapy that fall under the category of regenerative medicine, while presenting the stories of three canine clients whose lives were drastically improved through this exciting and innovative treatment.

Participate in canine health research by providing samples or by enrolling in a clinical trial. Samples are needed from healthy dogs and dogs affected by specific diseases.
