Google Cardboard

Google Cardboard is a virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) platform developed by Google for use with a head mount for a mobile phone. Named for its fold-out cardboard viewer, the platform is intended as a low-cost system to encourage interest and development in VR and AR applications. Users can either build their own viewer from simple, low-cost components using specifications published by Google, or purchase one manufactured by a third-party. The platform was created by David Coz and Damien Henry, Google engineers at the Google Cultural Institute in Paris, in their 20% "Innovation Time Off". It was introduced at the Google I/O 2014 developers conference for Android devices, with a release to iOS at the following year's event. Through January 2016, over 5 million Cardboard viewers had shipped and over 1,000 compatible applications had been published.

Assembly and operation

Google Cardboard headsets are built out of simple, low-cost components. The headset specifications were designed by Google, but there is no official manufacturer or vendor for the device. Instead, Google made the list of parts, schematics, and assembly instructions freely available on their website, allowing people to assemble Cardboard themselves from readily available parts. These parts are a piece of cardboard cut into a precise shape, 45 mm focal length lenses, magnets or capacitive tape, a hook and loop fastener (such as Velcro), a rubber band, and an optional near field communication (NFC) tag. Google provides extra recommendations for large scale manufacturing, and pre-assembled kits based on these plans are available for less than US$5 from multiple vendors, who have also created a number of Cardboard variations.

Rithvik Dhanjani

Rithvik Dhanjani is an Indian television actor. He played in Pavitra Rishta as Arjun Digvijay Kirloskar. He won the Indian dance reality show Nach Baliye 6 with his partner Asha Negi. In June 2012, Dhanjani entered Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 as Wild Card entry and came in third place.

Asha Negi

Asha Negi is an Indian television actress. She won the Indian dance reality show Nach Baliye 6 along with her partner Rithvik Dhanjani. She played the role of Purvi Kirloskar in Pavitra Rishta. Asha participated in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi (season 6) and went on to be a semi-finalist.

Negi was born and raised in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. In 2009, she was crowned Miss Uttarakhand 2009. She eventually moved to Mumbai to pursue an acting career. Currently, she is playing the role of Koyal in Kuch Toh Hai Tere Mere Darmiyaan.

Samsung Gear VR

Samsung Gear VR is a mobile virtual reality device developed by Samsung Electronics in collaboration with Oculus VR. A compatible Samsung Galaxy device (Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6/S6 Edge), sold separately, acts as the headset's display and processor, while the Gear VR unit itself contains the high field of view lenses as well as a custom IMU for rotational tracking which connects to the smartphone via micro-USB. This IMU is more accurate and well calibrated with lower latency than internal smartphone IMUs such as used for Google Cardboard.

The Gear VR headset also includes a touchpad and back button on the side, as well as a proximity sensor to detect when the headset is on. The touchpad and button allow for a standard minimum input capability for users to interact with the virtual environments, whereas Google Cardboard devices only feature a button.

The Gear VR was first announced in September 2014. To allow developers to create content for the Gear VR and to allow VR/technology enthusiasts to get early access to the technology, Samsung has released two innovator editions of the Gear VR before the consumer version.
