Birrarung Marr

Birrarung Marr is Melbourne's newest major parkland in more than 100 years. Birrarung Marr 8.3 hectare park was opened on Australia Day, 26 January 2002 situated between Federation Square and Melbourne Park, providing a promenade link between CBD and the sporting precinct with a continuous green belt of parkland around the city. Wide, open spaces and large, sculptured terraces have been specially designed to host some of Melbourne's best events and festivals throughout the year and a theatre-like space at the river's edge will easily accommodate large crowds. The tops of these terraces give way to spectacular views of the City, Southbank, Domain and the Yarra River. Birrarung means "river of mists" in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people who originally inhabited the area, while Marr means "side of the river". The park brings focus towards the river and will become a day-to-day space in which people can relax or take part in a variety of activities against a backdrop of native flora in creative and exciting patterns. A must see within the park are the Federation Bells - 1920 individual bells.
