Stuart Parkin IBM Almaden Research Center Nov 4, 2013 Spintronics lecture given by Stuart Parkin at the UC Santa Barbara Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP). Spintronics is a research field that is focused on the controlled manipulation of currents of the quantum-mechanical spin angular momentum of electrons in atomically engineered nanostructures. It promises entirely new classes of sensor, memory and logic devices. Magnetic recording read heads -- initially formed from a "spin-valve", and more recently using a "magnetic tunnel junction" -- have enabled a 1,000-fold increase in the storage capacity of hard disk drives since 1997. The very low cost of disk drives coupled with the high performance and reliability of solid-state memories, may be combined in the Racetrack Memory -- a novel three-dimensional technology which stores information as a series of magnetic domain walls in nanowires, manipulated by spin-polarized currents. Spintronic devices may even allow for "plastic" devices that mimic synaptic switches in the brain, which would allow for the possibility of ultra-low power computing devices. Dr. Stuart Parkin is an IBM Fellow, manager of the Magnetoelectronics group at the IBM Almaden Research Center, and a Consulting Professor at Stanford University. He is also director of the IBM-Stanford Spintronic Science and Applications Center. Dr. Parkin's research interests include oxide thin film heterostructures, high temperature superconductors, and magnetic thin-film structures, as well as spintronic materials and devices for advanced sensor, memory, and logic applications. Among his many honors, Parkin is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Royal Society (London). Among his numerous awards, he counts the 2009 IUPAP Magnetism Prize and Néel Medal, the APS's 2012 David Adler Lectureship Award, and the 2012 von Hippel Award from the Materials Research Society. It was a very cold day after a high of 87 the other day, like a switch was thrown, today was only 45. I am using the fireplace again. This is a strange year. My rain water collector only got about 20 gallons in three days of rain. I expected a lot more but it just rains lightly, but non stop. A good thunderstorm will fill both my tanks in just minutes. I cleaned up my desk and work bench today and set up some electronics. I am making a Bedini lead alum battery conversion using an old junk AGM battery I have had laying around for a while. If this battery works for me, I can use it in the chicken coop to run some lights. I also started to make some chicken coop LED lights. Everyone tells me the hens need light in order to lay eggs. So I am installing LED lights to run off solar during the day.

SINGAPORE: Passengers on approved local airlines will now get more leeway to use electronic devices, like mobile phones and tablets, on flights, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said. In a statement issued on Friday (July 11), the CAAS said it has amended its regulations to allow Singapore carriers to expand passenger use of such devices on more segments of the flight, including during take-off and landing. Passengers will now be allowed to use transmitting devices, such as mobile phones and tablets, provided the device is set to flight mode. Those who want to use the device in non-flight mode will have to wait until the plane is cruising above 10,000 feet. Unintentionally transmitting devices, such as electronic games and cameras, will now be allowed throughout the flight, including during taxiing, take-off and landing. Previously, they were only allowed to be used when the plane is cruising above 10,000 feet. Voice calls using mobile phones will still be strictly prohibited as voice communications, requiring strong signals to be sent out for receipt at great distances, may interfere with the aircraft systems, CAAS said. Local carriers will have to ensure that their aircraft meet the certification requirements and conduct the necessary safety risk assessments, the authority said. This is to ensure that the use of such devices do not interfere with the performance of the aircraft navigation or communication systems. Mr Yap Ong Heng, Director-General of CAAS, said: "CAAS regularly reviews its regulations taking into account the evolving needs of the travelling public and aviation industry, and technological developments." He added that many of the Singapore carriers are already taking steps to ensure there would be no interference to flight operations before proceeding with implementation. Singapore Airlines, the only airline currently approved to implement the new regulations, said it welcomed the move. "More and more of our customers are now travelling with portable electronic devices, and we are pleased to have implemented this for the benefit of our customers," Mr Tan Pee Teck, Senior Vice-President of Product and Services said. Safety remains the airline's top priority, he said, adding that cabin crew will ensure passengers are advised on the safe use of electronic devices during flights.
