Raising its black flag over the rugged mountainous regions of Afghanistan, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has emerged as a new threat to the war-ravaged country as it battles the Taliban for supremacy.
Employing violence and brutality used by the group in Syria and Iraq, Wilayat Khorasan, (the ancient name ISIL has chosen for the region made up of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of neighbouring countries), has emerged in seven different areas and vowed to step up operations, where the veteran fighters, the Taliban, once held sway.
Fighting to reconstitute the historical Khorasan into the so-called 'Caliphate' of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group says it has grand plans for the region, starting with uprooting the Taliban and the government of President Ashraf Ghani.
Causing friction with the regional and overall leadership of the Taliban, armed battles have increased over the past few months with dozens of Taliban fighters killed in the clashes, most notably in the Taliban stronghold of Nangarhar province.
ISIL's local chapter has also managed to attract dozens of fighters from the Taliban's ranks into its fold, while foreign fighters unable to make it to Syria and Iraq have thronged to the group's territory.
In ISIL and the Taliban we look at the group's growing popularity, how it made steady inroads into the country and the threat it poses for the future of Afghanistan.
We gain exclusive access to ISIL's central leadership, and meet children as young as 5-years-old being trained to fight and dedicate their lives to the 'Caliphate'.

In late September, the Taliban launched an offensive against Kunduz, a provincial capital in northern Afghanistan, capturing key buildings and freeing hundreds of prisoners from the city’s jail.
The offensive sparked a fierce battle between the militants and government forces, supported by US airstrikes. After several days of fighting, Afghan troops recaptured the city, and took down the Taliban's flag from the central square.
American planes targeted Taliban positions, but at the beginning of October, a hospital run by medical charity Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) was hit, killing 22 hospital staff and patients, with many seriously injured. The Pentagon later admitted that the strike was a mistake.
Gaining exclusive access to the Taliban, VICE News filmmaker Nagieb Khaja spoke to fighters that briefly took control of Kunduz — the first major city to fall to the group since it was ousted from power in 2001.

The recent online video of the Taliban executing a 22-year-old woman in front of a crowd of cheering men shocked the world. As Taliban aggression intensifies, how much has actually changed in Afghanistan?
At the height of the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan in 1999, a burqa-clad woman was executed in Kabul's main football stadium. Footage of the killing shocked the world and galvanised international opposition to the Taliban's brutal rule. Yet just two months ago, 22-year-old Najiba was mercilessly killed by the Taliban, just one hour's drive from Kabul. The Taliban created a fake court and once they decided she was guilty, executed her within an hour. "It was tyrannical and barbaric - it is impossible that the law would allow what they did", says Mullah Badam, who witnessed the killing. Speaking to Afghan women it's evident that violent abuse is still commonplace. 18-year-old Mumtaz had acid thrown on her face by her would-be husband, who she had refused to marry. "They would not let me look in the mirror. I cried a lot", she says. But there are women who are fighting back, including MP Fawzia Koofi, who plans to take on Hamid Karzai for the presidency. An outspoken champion of women's rights, she has faced assassination attempts and numerous death threats. She argues that for her male political opposition, "women's rights are a matter of sacrifice". With the Allied forces set to withdraw by 2014, this disturbing report highlights just how precarious the situation remains for the future of Afghan society.

In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it's all taken a devastating toll on the country and is creating the next generation of militants.

We went to Pakistan to invesitage why suicide bombings, IED use, and the Taliban are all growing at alarming rates. In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it's all taken a devastating toll on the country and is creating the next generation of militants. In late September, the Taliban launched an offensive against Kunduz, a provincial capital in northern Afghanistan, capturing key buildings and freeing hundreds of prisoners from the city’s jail. The offensive sparked a fierce battle between the militants and government forces, supported by US airstrikes. After several days of fighting, Afghan troops recaptured the city, and took down the Taliban's flag from the central square. Fighting to reconstitute the historical Khorasan into the so-called 'Caliphate' of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group says it has grand plans for the region, starting with uprooting the Taliban and the government of President Ashraf Ghani.
Causing friction with the regional and overall leadership of the Taliban, armed battles have increased over the past few months with dozens of Taliban fighters killed in the clashes, most notably in the Taliban stronghold of Nangarhar province.
ISIL's local chapter has also managed to attract dozens of fighters from the Taliban's ranks into its fold, while foreign fighters unable to make it to Syria and Iraq have thronged to the group's territory.
In ISIL and the Taliban we look at the group's growing popularity, how it made steady inroads into the country and the threat it poses for the future of Afghanistan.
We gain exclusive access to ISIL's central leadership, and meet children as young as 5-years-old being trained to fight and dedicate their lives to the 'Caliphate'.

In late September, the Taliban launched an offensive against Kunduz, a provincial capital in northern Afghanistan, capturing key buildings and freeing hundreds of prisoners from the city’s jail.
The offensive sparked a fierce battle between the militants and government forces, supported by US airstrikes. After several days of fighting, Afghan troops recaptured the city, and took down the Taliban's flag from the central square.
American planes targeted Taliban positions, but at the beginning of October, a hospital run by medical charity Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) was hit, killing 22 hospital staff and patients, with many seriously injured. The Pentagon later admitted that the strike was a mistake.
Gaining exclusive access to the Taliban, VICE News filmmaker Nagieb Khaja spoke to fighters that briefly took control of Kunduz — the first major city to fall to the group since it was ousted from power in 2001.

The recent online video of the Taliban executing a 22-year-old woman in front of a crowd of cheering men shocked the world. As Taliban aggression intensifies, how much has actually changed in Afghanistan?
At the height of the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan in 1999, a burqa-clad woman was executed in Kabul's main football stadium. Footage of the killing shocked the world and galvanised international opposition to the Taliban's brutal rule. Yet just two months ago, 22-year-old Najiba was mercilessly killed by the Taliban, just one hour's drive from Kabul. The Taliban created a fake court and once they decided she was guilty, executed her within an hour. "It was tyrannical and barbaric - it is impossible that the law would allow what they did", says Mullah Badam, who witnessed the killing. Speaking to Afghan women it's evident that violent abuse is still commonplace. 18-year-old Mumtaz had acid thrown on her face by her would-be husband, who she had refused to marry. "They would not let me look in the mirror. I cried a lot", she says. But there are women who are fighting back, including MP Fawzia Koofi, who plans to take on Hamid Karzai for the presidency. An outspoken champion of women's rights, she has faced assassination attempts and numerous death threats. She argues that for her male political opposition, "women's rights are a matter of sacrifice". With the Allied forces set to withdraw by 2014, this disturbing report highlights just how precarious the situation remains for the future of Afghan society.

In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it's all taken a devastating toll on the country and is creating the next generation of militants.

More than 200 Taliban children, many recruited as suicide bombers, are being held in special prisons across Afghanistan. Brought to you by the foremost documentarian on the Taliban and film maker of 'The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan', we meet these captured child fighters and hear their stories.
As NATO prepares to pull out of Afghanistan, they leave behind a country at the mercy of a resurgent Taliban. Vulnerable children are easy prey, many of whom have known nothing but war. The next generation aren't simply witnesses to the ongoing fighting; some of them have also become participants.
"The Taliban are good. The Taliban are building our country", a young boy tells the camera, head on. This is Afghanistan's terrorist generation. "It was one of these vests. They told me to blow myself up at a checkpoint". 10-year-old Neaz was offered 50 Afghanis (60p) for his young life. He was seized by the Taliban after the death of his family and prized for this special mission. As well as suicide mission preparations, their crimes include the laying of improvised explosive devices and ambush.
From the unrepentant to the lucky ones who got away, the willing and the reluctant, Taliban Child Fighters documents the experiences of captured child fighters. With unprecedented access, in and out of jails, it provides a unique perspective on an ongoing conflict, raising key questions about the legacy of western intervention in Afghanistan.

161 children killed in Afghanistan since the start of 2016, UN says
At least 161 children have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2016 in increased fighting between pro-government forces and the Taliban, the UN said. It’s a 29-percent of increase compared to the first three months of 2015. “In the first quarter of 2016, almost one third of civilian casualties were children,”said Danielle Bell, human rights director of the United Nations Assistance Mission In Afghanistan (UNAMA). The director added that the Mission has documented a 29-percent increase in child casualties compared to the same period in 2015. In the first quarter of 2016 UNAMA recorded 610 children casualties – 161 deaths and 449 injured. -
UN: Afghan child deaths soar due to militancy, terror
The United Nations has warned about the spike in child casualties in urban warfare as the Taliban militants and the Daesh terrorists step up their violence in Afghanistan. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan says 161 children have been killed in the first three months of 2016. The violence has also left nearly 450 youngsters injured, which is a 29% jump from last year. The mission warned that continued fighting near schools and residential areas will worsen the situation. It also noted that child deaths comprise a third of the overall civilian toll, which has dropped after hitting a record high last year. Afghan forces repel another Taliban assault in Kunduz
Officials say security has improved all over the province. There are still sporadic gun battles in other districts though. On Friday, the Taliban set off hours of fighting to seize Kunduz. 40 militants and 4 afghan forces were killed during the clash. The offensive began only days after the group announced its annual offensive using suicide bombing and guerilla fighting against the government. Al-Qaeda's revitalization in Afghanistan has both Afghan and U.S. officials concerned about the group's potential. Afghan Acting Defense Minister Masoom Stanekzai said: "They are really very active. They are working in quiet and reorganizing themselves and preparing themselves for bigger attacks." In an interview with CNN, a U.S. major general said Al-Qaeda's numbers aren't known, but previously U.S. officials have estimated some 300 fighters belong to the group. At least 161 children have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2016 in increased fighting between pro-government forces and the Taliban, the UN said. It’s a 29-percent of increase compared to the first three months of 2015.
“In the first quarter of 2016, almost one third of civilian casualties were children,”said Danielle Bell, human rights director of the United Nations Assistance Mission In Afghanistan (UNAMA).
The director added that the Mission has documented a 29-percent increase in child casualties compared to the same period in 2015. In the first quarter of 2016 UNAMA recorded 610 children casualties – 161 deaths and 449 injured.

There was the heartbreaking photo of a dead child washed up on a beach. The photo of drowned Syrian toddler Aylan shocked the world. That was in early September 2015. His tiny body, lying on a beach in Turkey, became the symbol of the worst migration crisis since World War II.
But since then, the sinkings of migrant boats have not stopped. Hundreds of thousands of people have continued to try to reach Europe via the same dangerous path. And hundreds have lost their lives.
In northwestern Turkey, for the inhabitants of the small fishing village of Dikili in Izmir province, like for those of the chic resort of Cesme, daily life over the past year has been punctuated by these tragedies of which they are often helpless witnesses. Hearing their eyewitness accounts also means telling the stories of those who risked their lives for an uncertain future. Lives that ended on a makeshift boat, at the mercy of the waves.

The Aegean Sea, between Turkey and Greece, is a transit point for refugees fleeing the war in Syria or the Taliban in Afghanistan and trying to reach Europe. But their makeshift boats often sink. Off the Turkish coast, fishermen dread finding dead bodies in their nets... Rescuing shipwrecked migrants is now almost part of their daily routine. Our reporter has been to Dikili, a small Turkish fishing port just across the sea from the Greek island of Lesbos.
There was the heartbreaking photo of a dead child washed up on a beach. The photo of drowned Syrian toddler Aylan shocked the world. That was in early September 2015. His tiny body, lying on a beach in Turkey, became the symbol of the worst migration crisis since World War II.
But since then, the sinkings of migrant boats have not stopped. Hundreds of thousands of people have continued to try to reach Europe via the same dangerous path. And hundreds have lost their lives.
In northwestern Turkey, for the inhabitants of the small fishing village of Dikili in Izmir province, like for those of the chic resort of Cesme, daily life over the past year has been punctuated by these tragedies of which they are often helpless witnesses. Hearing their eyewitness accounts also means telling the stories of those who risked their lives for an uncertain future. Lives that ended on a makeshift boat, at the mercy of the waves.

In an interview with CNN, a U.S. major general said Al-Qaeda's numbers aren't known, but previously U.S. officials have estimated some 300 fighters belong to the group.
The concern isn't in numbers, which are low compared to terrorist groups like ISIS, but in strengthening ties Al-Qaeda has to the Taliban.
Several countries, like the U.S. and Afghanistan, have long tried for peace talks with the Taliban, and say it could be the only way to attain "lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region."

A Taliban ambush video out of Paktika province shows Afghan security forces getting wrecked by machine gun and recoilless rifle fire. It’s easy to sit in a chair and point out flaws in tactics, and there is no context with the video to know exactly what was happening down there on the ground. However, the first point of action when being engaged by a linear or L-shaped ambush from an elevated, far position is to get out of the kill zone as soon as possible. For some reason, these Afghan gun trucks stay and attempt to trade blows with the Taliban who were behind well-protected, predetermined fighting positions. This was a no win situation for them, and it took multiple vehicles taking direct hits from high explosive rounds before they determined it was a good idea to fall back.
This video, although recently released, is a throwback to the same threats our own troops faced when fighting in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan. Many times, there was only one route you could take, and the enemy would be waiting.
