The church of St Mary at Mount Naranco (Spanish: Iglesia de Santa María del Naranco; Asturian: Ilesia de Santa María'l Narancu) is a Roman Catholic Asturian pre-Romanesque Asturian architecture church on the slope of Mount Naranco situated 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Oviedo, northern Spain. Ramiro I of Asturias ordered it to be built as a royal palace as part of a larger complex that also incorporated the nearby church of San Miguel de Lillo, 100 meters away. It was completed in 848. Its structural features, such as the barrel vault — with transverse ribs corresponding one-to-one with contraforts at the exterior, make it a clear precursor of the Romanesque construction. The exterior decorations, as well as the use of stilted arches mark the intended verticality of the composition. It was converted into a church at the end of the 13th century.
It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1985. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1885.
Built as a recreational palace, it is situated on the southern side of Mount Naranco facing the city, and was originally part of a series of royal buildings located in the outskirts. Its character as a civil building changed in the 12th century when it was converted into a church dedicated to St. Mary. The Palace of Santa María del Naranco, involved a significant stylistic, morphological, constructive and decorative renovation of Pre-Romanesque, supplementing it with new, innovative resources, representing a leap forward with respect to immediately previous periods.
Monte Naranco is a mountain in Oviedo, Spain. The church Santa María del Naranco is situated on its slopes. It is also known as the finish for the bicycle races Subida al Naranco and Vuelta a España.
Santa María (with diacritic over the "i") or Santa Maria may refer to:
The Vuelta a España (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbwelta a esˈpaɲa]; English: Tour of Spain) is an annual multiple stage bicycle race primarily held in Spain, while also occasionally making passes through nearby countries. Inspired by the success of the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, the race was first organized in 1935. The race was prevented from being run by the Spanish Civil War and World War II in the early years of its existence; however, the race has been held annually since 1955. As the Vuelta gained prestige and popularity the race was lengthened and its reach began to extend all around the globe. Since 1979, the event has been staged and managed by Unipublic, until in 2014, when Amaury Sport Organisation acquired control, with both working together. The peloton expanded from a primarily Spanish participation; riders from all over the world participate in the race each year. The Vuelta is a UCI World Tour event, which means that the teams that compete in the race are mostly UCI ProTeams, with the exception of the wild card teams that the organizers can invite.

A film by Larry Derdeyn. Victor Monte (the Mystery Monk of Naranco) puts the outside in outsider art. His days are spent on Naranco Mountain cleaning paths and adding his own unique touch to historical sites, as well as creating his own fantastic locations from scratch. Shelters (refugios), beds, tables, gymnasium, photographs, shower, etc. are among his curious creations; gateways to his peculiar vision. *At times the sub-titles descend into madness but somehow it's appropriate.

Places to see in ( Asturias - Spain ) San Miguel de Lillo St. Michael of Lillo is a Roman Catholic church built on the Naranco mount, near the Church of Santa María del Naranco in Asturias. It was consecrated by Ramiro I and his wife Paterna in the year 848. San Miguel de Lillo was originally dedicated to St. Mary until this worship passed to the nearby palace in the 12th century, leaving this church dedicated to Saint Michael. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. San Miguel de Lillo originally had a basilica ground plan, three aisles with a barrel vault, although part of the original structure has disappeared as the building collapsed during the 12th or 13th century. Nowadays, it conserves its western half from that period, together with several elements in the rest of ...

Take a tour of San Miguel de Lillo in Oviedo, Spain -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The Roman Catholic Church San Miguel de Lillo stands on Naronco Mount in Oviedo, Spain. It was constructed in pre-Romanesque style in 848, and was originally dedicated to Saint Mary. When the patronage of Saint Mary was passed to a neighboring castle, this structure was then dedicated to Saint Michael. The church initially had three separate aisles and a tunnel vault, but part of the building collapsed in the 12th century and was never repaired. An ornamental lattice on San Miguel de Lillo's facade is a highlighted feature, as it was made from one single stone slab. Due to its importance and long standing this structure was declared a UNESCO Wo...
