Our word of the day is “Multinational Corporation”
A multinational corporation is a business that has its facilities and other assets in at least one country other than its home country. Such companies have offices and/or factories in different countries and usually have a centralized head office where they co-ordinate global management.
Generally, any company or group that derives a quarter of its revenue from operations outside of its home country is considered a multinational corporation.
There are four categories of multinational corporations: (1) a multinational, decentralized corporation with strong home country presence, (2) a global, centralized corporation that acquires cost advantage through centralized production wherever cheaper resources are available, (3) an international company that builds on the parent corporation's technology or R&D;, or (4) a transnational enterprise that combines the previous three approaches. According to UN data, some 35,000 companies have direct investment in foreign countries, and the largest 100 of them control about 40 percent of world trade.
In economic terms, a firm’s advantages in establishing a multinational corporation include both vertical and horizontal economies of scale and an increased market share. Although cultural barriers can create unpredictable obstacles as companies establish offices and production plants around the world, a firm’s technical expertise, experienced personnel, and proven strategies usually can be transferred from country to country. Critics of the multinational corporation usually view it as an economic and, often, political means of foreign domination.

The Dutch East India Company was the second multinational corporation in the world (the first, the British East India Company, was founded two years earlier) and the first company to issue stock and it was the largest of the early multinational companies. It was also arguably the world's first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies.

In Ethiopia, one of the hungriest countries in the world, small farmers and communities are being moved off their land as international agribusinesses take over large swathes of fertile farmland.
Over the last three years an area the size of Britain has been handed over to corporations to make way for large-scale industrial farming in Ethiopia. With cheap rates and incentives, companies are pouring in to the exploit the land the government has cleared of its people. Many of the displaced are too scared to complain:"what power do we have to stop them? We just stay silent", says one farmer. Despite promises of a better life, many Ethiopians are being left within nothing. Ethiopian Farm Minister, Wondirad Mandefro, shrugs: "they have to abandon their previous way of life".

Napalm Death are an extreme metal band formed in Birmingham, England in 1981. While none of its original members remain in the group, the lineup of vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway, bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris and drummer Danny Herrera has remained consistent for most of the band's career.
Napalm Death are credited with defining the grindcore genre by incorporating elements of hardcore punk and death metal, short songs, fast tempos, deep guttural vocals and sociopolitical lyrics. The band's debut album Scum, released in 1987 by Earache Records, proved substantially influential throughout the global metal community.
Napalm Death have released fifteen studio albums and are listed by Nielsen SoundScan as the seventh best-selling death metal band in the United States.
Napalm Death were formed in the village of Meriden near Birmingham, in the United Kingdom, in May 1981 by Nic Bullen and Miles Ratledge while the duo were still in their early teenage years. The duo had been playing in amateur bands since 1980 as an extension of their fanzine writing, and went through a number of names (including "Civil Defence," "The Mess," "Evasion" and "Undead Hatred") before choosing Napalm Death in mid 1981.

With cheap rates and incentives, companies are pouring in to the exploit the land the government has cleared of its people. Many of the displaced are too scared to complain:"what power do we have to stop them? We just stay silent", says one farmer. Although cultural barriers can create unpredictable obstacles as companies establish offices and production plants around the world, a firm’s technical expertise, experienced personnel, and proven strategies usually can be transferred from country to country. Critics of the multinational corporation usually view it as an economic and, often, political means of foreign domination.

With cheap rates and incentives, companies are pouring in to the exploit the land the government has cleared of its people. Many of the displaced are too scared to complain:"what power do we have to stop them? We just stay silent", says one farmer. Despite promises of a better life, many Ethiopians are being left within nothing. Ethiopian Farm Minister, Wondirad Mandefro, shrugs: "they have to abandon their previous way of life".

In this documentary, our team studied the Coca-Cola Company and how it has been impacted by globalization. Since Coca-Cola was first sold in 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia, it has taken over the globe and now operates in more than two hundred companies.
As a team, we discussed how globalization, according to Coke, is known as the Coca-Cola System. This is the manufacturing system that allows Coca-Cola to license to distributors who can incorporate different world markets, resources, and technologies to maximize revenue. The Thomas Friedman definition of globalization discusses the combination of markets, nation-states and technologies and how they are able to extend farther, faster, deeper and cheaper than before.
We also discussed how the Coca-Cola system maintains a high level of competition between their distributors to spur innovation. For example, Coca-Cola sells the rights and label to Dasani who in turn is in charge of bottling and distribution. Dasani can then create its own line of products such as flavored Dasani water.
Our team also explored the economic impact that the Coca-Cola Company has on the economies of nations worldwide. For example, a recent study has shown that in South Africa one job in the Coca-Cola organization ultimately provides sixteen additional jobs. Global salaries and benefits worldwide increased by 1.2 billion dollars from the years 2005 to 2007. This shows how, through globalization, Coca-Cola has been able to positively impact not only the United States economy, but also economies of nations worldwide. Along with this impact, the Coca-Cola Company is committed to supporting community investment programs.
As a whole, we hope that this documentary does an effective job of conveying how the process of globalization has allowed Coca-Cola to reach around the world farther, faster, deeper and cheaper than ever before, and in a way that is enabling the world to reach into individuals, corporations, and nation-states farther, faster, deeper, cheaper than ever before.

The launch featured a panel discussion moderated by Professor Philip Alston, Co-Chair of NYU School of Law's Center for Human Rights and Global Justice. Professor Ruggie and a cross-section of esteemed commentators discussed the evolution of the UN Guiding Principles, their contributions to the field of business and human rights today, and their ongoing potential as a game-changing standard of practice.
Just Business tells the powerful story of how the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights came to exist. It demonstrates how, to solve a seemingly unsolvable problem, Ruggie had to abandon many widespread and long-held understandings about the relationships between business, government, rights and law, and develop fresh ways of viewing the issues. It takes us through the journey of assembling the right type of team, of witnessing the severity of the problem firsthand, and of pressing through the many obstacles such a daunting endeavor faced.
