If you decide to revamp your wardrobe or storage space, it's important to consider whether built-ins are a better option. Although more expensive, shop-built and installed components are more durable and bring all your elements together in one unit. If you can't afford them, or maybe need more storage, consider baskets, dividers, storage containers, hooks and racks to help ensure every item has a place, and sliding doors to save space. Storage ideas, like homes (and the multitude of cupboard organisers available today), come in all shapes and sizes.

Choose the perfect mirror with room for a jewellery box (or elaborate tie rack!)

A tall mirror by the wardrobe is great; a tall makeup vanity mirror with storage is even better. Stock a jewellery box next to it and you’ll have no reason to take more than 15 minutes to get ready ever again. Your cupboard is the perfect place for the mirror and jewellery box placement: keep things close to your clothes racks and shoe racks. It won’t hurt to stack a few storage boxes for all the seasonal jewellery box and cupboard changes. In fact, the best way to ensure that your clothes, shoes, jewellery and makeup don’t muck about when unused is to carefully pack things away in storage boxes of different (appropriate) sizes. Come next season and your outfits will be fresh - straight out of storage and back into your cupboard!

Of course, men might prefer room for a tie rack, instead of a jewellery box. These can vary as per size and materials and are great additions to your built-in wardrobes. If you’re unsure about which tie rack to buy, simply take stock of how many ties you tend to wear regularly, and occasionally. It might just be a good idea to get more than one tie rack.

How many cabinets should built-in wardrobes have?

Wardrobe organisation is key; with so many shoes, ties, clothes and bags to stash, it can get messy really fast. Built-in wardrobes are a great way to ensure that each item gets put away after laundry day. Organisers in the can build custom-sized cabinets that are perfectly fit for particular items. They can even build shoe racks, rotating tie racks, purse display cases or pull-out drawers for smaller accessories or shirts. It's the best way to get what you want, so if you continuously have trouble finding things in your space, it might be a worthy investment.

How do I organise my wardrobe or cupboard?

If custom cabinets aren't enough or too expensive, as they often tend to be, you can always create your own organising tools. There are hundreds of custom cupboard organisers that’ll help with the process, everything from hooks to bins to drawer partitions - or dividers. Baskets and bins are great for storing things like belts and scarves, while shelf dividers keep sweaters, jeans and shirts in line.

Wardrobe extras for more storage and accessories

If you're looking for luxury, try including a small sitting area with either a window seat, ottoman or lounge chair. It can work as a great getaway from everyday life and can also come in handy when putting on those pesky high heels or boots. Or liven up your morning routine by adding your own makeup vanity, complete with a jewellery box and makeup drawer. And don’t forget the hangers - those nifty little things without which all our wardrobes would be chaos central. Select hangers according to the type of clothes you wear. Soft jumpers would be better off on hangers with broad curves on the sides; multiple base layers would do well even on a regular tie rack; while scarf hangers, belt hangers or lingerie hangers would be quite welcome in any busy cupboard.

If you need extra storage - above and beyond your built-in wardrobes or your spacious walk-in wardrobes, we can help you out there as well. Simply browse all the storage and wardrobe photos, filtered by any specifications you have in mind, and you'll have a list of ideas ready for action.
