What Houzz contributors are saying:

Stroke of genius. Artwork is the easiest way to add colour if you’re not ready to commit to bold wallpaper or paint. Selecting art is easy – when you see a painting or print that makes your heart soar, hang the expense and buy it; you’ll be bringing that feeling home with you.
Include striking artPerfect for a vast dining space, or for rooms with high ceilings, adding a striking piece of art can bring the dining space together and centralise the setting.Look for something that uses colours you love, and which you can draw from to use in furniture and accessories to bring the theme of the room together. The wow piece. If your going to break the bank on a piece, make it your statement artwork and situate it in a common area of your house so that it is viewed by the most people.Furnish the room so the artwork is the the centre of attention. In this dining room Sydney interior design company Arent & Pyke has used a simple and soft colour palette in the surrounding furnishings to let the statement artwork set the mood.
7. Source local artworksCafés often have local artists’ and photographers’ work up, so make sure you fill the walls with pieces that inspire you. Source art not only in shops but also online, in markets, and at auctions. Limited edition prints can be a more affordable option.
10. Mix and match with other decorative elementsIf you have large-scale artworks hung in living or dining rooms in which there are also pendants, ensure that the two elements don’t compete for visual appreciation. Choose pendants in a colour that will complement, or is already featured in, the artwork. For example, the pendants above would have also worked if they were in a blue, green or purple.
