"Both clinical trial and pharmacovigilance data
point to possible links between these drugs and violent behaviours
... Many jurisdictions appear not to have considered the possibility that a prescription drug may induce violence...more
...In these trials, hostile events are found to excess in both adults and children on paroxetine compared with placebo & are found across indications, & both on therapy & during withdrawal. The rates were highest in children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (
OCD), where the odds ratio of a hostile event was 17 times greater...more
Conclusion ...these cases need urgent examination jointly by jurists and psychiatrists in all countries where antidepressants are widely used. The problem is international, and it would make sense to organise an international effort now. More including case studies at link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1564177/

Drug maker Eli Lilly hit with foreign bribery charges
12/20/
2012 CNN Money
US Drug maker Eli Lilly has agreed to pay more than $29 million to settle charges that four of its international subsidiaries paid bribes to win business, the
Securities and Exchange Commission announced Thursday
..
The
SEC charged Eli Lilly (
LLY,
Fortune 500) with violating the
Foreign Corrupt Practices Act due to payments made to government officials and associates by the company's subsidiaries in
Russia,
Brazil,
China and
Poland.
In Russia, the SEC complaint alleges,
Lilly's subsidiary paid millions of dollars for nonexistent "marketing agreements" between
1994 and
2005 to offshore companies linked to government officials. Even after becoming aware of these potential violations, the
U.S. parent company did nothing to stop the use of such agreements for more than five years, the SEC says.

Through its "
Viva Zyprexa" campaign, Lilly allegedly instructed its sales force to recommend that primary care physicians prescribe Zyprexa to adults suffering symptoms such as agitation, aggression, hostility, mood or sleep disturbances, or depression. In addition to these uses being off label, primary care physicians rarely manage the antipsychotic medications of patients treated for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, the uses for which Zyprexa is actually approved....more

Time Magazine:
America's Medicated
Army Mark Thompson 6/05/2008
At least 115 soldiers killed themselves last year, including 36 in
Iraq and
Afghanistan, the Army said on May 29. That's the highest toll since it started keeping such records in
1980.
Nearly 40% of Army suicide victims in 2006 and
2007 took psychotropic drugs — overwhelmingly, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (
SSRIs) like
Prozac and Zoloft. While the Army cites failed relationships as the primary cause, some outside experts sense a link between suicides and prescription-drug use —

The efficacy of SSRIs in mild or moderate cases has been disputed. A
2010 meta-analysis states that "The magnitude of benefit of antidepressant medication compared with placebo ... may be minimal or nonexistent, on average, in patients with mild or moderate symptoms. For patients with very severe depression, the benefit of medications over placebo is substantial.
SSRIs are the first class of psychotropic drugs discovered using the process called rational drug design, a process that starts with a specific biological target and then creates a molecule designed to affect it. They are the most widely prescribed antidepressants in many countries
