“When I came back from Vietnam, I knew I was going to be a writer; that was it,” says Joe Haldeman, author of the seminal work of science fiction, The Forever War. Drafted in 1967, Haldeman fought in Vietnam and was awarded several medals, including a Purple Heart. He has since published over two dozen novels, short story collections, and poems, and won multiple awards, including the Nebula, Hugo, Locus, and World Fantasy Awards. Now, Joe Haldeman shares how his experiences in combat led to his desire to write—and to write science fiction. “I wrote constantly in Vietnam,” he says. “I was practicing for the novel that I wanted to write.” Regarded as one of the greatest military science fiction novels ever written, The Forever War is as relevant today as it was in the 1970s. Take a look at the beginning of “the war that lasted forever."

“The world was changing in ways that you needed science fiction to discuss,” says Science Fiction Grand Master Joe Haldeman of the post–Vietnam War era. Haldeman began writing while in the army; he was drafted in 1967 and fought in Vietnam. When he came home from the war, he saw how technologies—military and civilian—were rapidly changing the human experience. This unstoppable forward momentum propelled him to write science fiction stories that drew on his combat experience and view of the world. “Good science fiction writers ought to be equally passionate” about believing “the world is going to hell” and “the world is going to be a wonderful place,” Haldeman says. Take a glimpse at that dual world through Haldeman’s eyes, and see how this award-winning author has shaped his career to be attuned to the march of change.

The UNEF ground troops are sent out for reconnaissance and revenge. The elite recruits have IQs of 150 and above, are highly educated, healthy and fit. Training is gruelling – first on Earth, in Missouri, and later on a fictional planet called "Charon" beyond Pluto (written before the discovery of the actual planetoid). Several of the recruits are killed during training, due to the extreme environments and the use of live weapons. In addition to being an award-winning writer, Haldeman is a painter. In 2009 and 2010, he was hospitalized for pancreatitis.
Haldeman's most famous novel is The Forever War (1974), inspired by his Vietnam experiences, which won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. He later turned it into a series. Haldeman also wrote two of the earliest original novels based on the 1960s Star Trek TV series universe, Planet of Judgment (August 1977) and World Without End (February 1979). In October 2008 it was announced that Ridley Scott will direct a feature film based on The Forever War for Fox.
