Dorian’s Art Direction: Kali, eh? Goddess of death and destruction? It’s not exactly…well, friendly, now is it? I tell you what. Make the cover pink. Bright pink. That’ll be more…cosy, like.

Many thanks to Dorian!

Spray painted fluorescent pink is totally the wrong colour for this book, it should be a completely black cover to reflect the dour contents. Black writing, too.

If you don’t know anything beforehand about Dan Simmons’ books, your expectations judging by the cover will go something like this:
“SONG OF KALI
The raw, gritty story of the rise and fall of Britain’s first all-Hindu Punk Rock band.”

Is it any defence to say this was part of a promotion featuring spray painted grafitti art style covers for a collection of horror novels? No? OK, moving on . . .

OH MY FRAKKING GODS WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!
I have been visiting this sit for several months and this is the first time I have actually yelled aloud at the book cover presented. Mercy. I may have to go back to bed and get up again.

Looks like something Dave McKean tossed off !

You bloody kids, quit that graffiti rubbish before I call the police!

No excuses Simon! Kinda looks like Kali has just taken a left hook to the face.

A.R. @ #2, that’s EXACTLY what I thought! And no, I don’t know Dan Simmons’ books. Hilarious, thanks!

Action Kate, if the cover horrified you, that’s probably the intended effect.

Is it just me, but it looks a lot like someone’s creeping up behind “Kali” with an intention to throttle… Don’t look behind you…

Nix@9: well, Dan Simmons’s work is rather horrifying, so it’s at least truth in advertising. He makes me queasy in a way Stephen King never could.
…in fact, please excuse me, just thinking about DS’s stories has made me so ill I have to go throw up now.

Glad to see that Kali supports breast cancer research.

Wow Banksy isn’t as good as he use to be.

@#2
I’d read that.

Nary a mortal can hear the Song of Kali and live — the dread tune which sounds like this:
“ANND III-IIIII… WWILLL AAALWAAAYS LLLLOVVE YOUUU-UUU-UUU…”

It reminds me of the Hindu festival of Holi, actually. Lots of brightly coloured paint and powder is thrown around on that occasion.
(Serves me right for having a day job to do with religions!)
Of course I fully expect it to be nothing to do with the Festival of Colours and just a weird-ass book cover.
