Tatar Nation: The Other Crimea
Crimea's Tatars — who amount to 12 percent of the peninsula's 2.2 million residents — overwhelmingly boycotted the March 16th referendum for Crimea to become part of Russia. The Tatar's bad history with Russia was a major factor of their decision, as Stalin persecuted and deported them en masse from the Crimean Peninsula in 1944. After the collapse of the Soviet Union Tatars trickled back into Crimea, but their status there was always temporary. With Crimea's much-disputed status as part of Russia following the referendum, the future of the Tatars is a big question mark. VICE News' Simon Ostrovsky spent some time with Tatars in Simferopol in the week leading up to the referendum to get their side of the story.

Who are the Tatars? Europe's Oldest Remaining Islamic Community
Just who are the Tatars? The Tatars are arguably Europe's oldest remaining Islamic community, stretching back many hundreds (possibly over a thousand) years and today number in the tens of millions. Scattered over many parts of Eastern Europe, the Tatars are divided between a multitude of different groups with very diverse origins and histories.
The different Tatar groups, which includes those with a range of phenotypes and cultures; from more East Asian, European or Middle Eastern-looking individuals as well as those belonging to traditional Islamic, Christian, pagan and even Jewish communities. Thanks for watching!

These Muslim Tatars are Fighting Russian Soldiers in Ukraine
Crimean Tatars have faced a long history of persecution and ethnic cleansing throughout the Soviet Union. Now, Russia is invading their homeland of Ukraine. Dozens of mainly Tatar Muslims have banded together to form a civilian battalion to fight against Russian troops.
When World War II ended, roughly 218,000 Tatars were deported from the Crimean Peninsula. Many of them only returned home recently, just to be forced out again when Russia took control of the Peninsula south of Ukraine in 2014. They are now fighting to liberate all the territories occupied by the Russians so they can find a way back home to the Crimean Peninsula.

Europe and the Islamic World have been in contact with each other for as long as Islam has existed. This interaction has created some very interesting stories. From an Arabic speaking Pope to Muslim Vikings. Unfortunately, in popular media, this interaction between Europe and the Islamic World is too often shown in the colours of warfare. People will often talk about battles between a Muslim and a European Empire as great religions colliding but this is gross simplification of this complicated history. For instance, the Ottoman Siege of Vienna in 1683 is often talked about by people with limited understanding of history as the great triumph of Christian Europe over the Islamic World. But did you know that in that Siege, on the Christian side, there were several regiments of cavalry that was made up of almost entirely Muslims whose ancestors had lived in Europe since before the Ottoman Empire even existed? This is the story of the Tatars, the Muslim communities of Eastern Europe.
