Gaza siblings killed in air strike after rockets hit Israel

A 10-year-old Palestinian boy and his six-year-old sister have been killed after Israeli aircraft fired missiles into the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military said its aircraft targeted four militant training camps belonging to Hamas, but refused to comment on the death of the children.

The boy died and his sister was wounded when their home at Beit Lahiya, in the northern Gaza Strip, was hit by missile debris. The girl later died in the hospital, medical officials said.

The children were sleeping in a prefabricated shelter next to their house, which was destroyed during the 2014 Gaza war.

One of the Hamas training camps targeted is reported to have been next to their home.

Four rockets were fired from the Hamas-held territory into southern Israel late on Friday night. They landed in open areas and caused no injuries.

Editor's note March 16, 2016: This story has been amended to remove sub-editor's changes to Sophie McNeill's copy, clarifying that the home in which the two children died was next to one of the Hamas camps being targeted in the air strikes.
