This is a short movie I made for a group project for my English class. It is a documentary about the various levels of Hell to fit the sins, as described by 14th century poet Dante Alighieri.

Please note that none of the above interviews actually exist in the movie. Although we filmed them, the framerate was for some reason poor; as such, we decided to leave them out.
Pictures were found from various Google searches... another major source was Dante Worlds at http://danteworlds.laits.utexas.edu/
Due to equipment malfunction, our tool of necessity for recording the narrative was an iPod mic... the audio is a bit garbled at times, especially at the beginning of each clip, so bear with us.

"L'Inferno" took over three years to make and was the first full-length Italian feature film ever made. The film was first screened in Naples in the Teatro Mercadante on March 10, 1911. The film was an international success, taking more than $2 million in the United States alone.
"(Using Google Translate) The film is composed of 54 scenes. Faithfully recounts the first canto of the Divine Comedy, a series of animated tableaux inspired by the illustrations of Gustave Doré. In the dark forest Dante meets Virgil, and with him begins the distance between the circles and the Malebolge, where he met all the famous characters of the poem. In Caina hears the story of Count Ugolino and then they see Lucifer with three heads, tearing a man who struggles, before being able "to see the stars." The Divine Comedy (Italian: Divina Commedia) is an epic poem written by Dante Alighieri between c. 1308 and his death in 1321. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative and allegorical vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
The poem begins on the night before Good Friday in the year 1300, "halfway along our life's path" . Dante is thirty-five years old, lost in a dark wood (understood as sin) assailed by beasts (a lion, a leopard, and a she-wolf) he cannot evade, and unable to find the "straight way" -- also translatable as "right way" -- to salvation (symbolized by the sun behind the mountain). Conscious that he is ruining himself and that he is falling into a "low place" where the sun is silent , Dante is at last rescued by Virgil, and the two of them begin their journey to the underworld. Each sin's punishment in Inferno is a contrapasso, a symbolic instance of poetic justice; for example, fortune-tellers have to walk with their heads on backwards, unable to see what is ahead, because that was what they had tried to do in life:
Allegorically, the Inferno represents the Christian soul seeing sin for what it really is, and the three beasts represent three types of sin: the self-indulgent, the violent, and the malicious. These three types of sin also provide the three main divisions of Dante's Hell: Upper Hell, outside the city of Dis, for the four sins of indulgence (lust, gluttony, avarice, anger); Circle 7 for the sins of violence; and Circles 8 and 9 for the sins of malice (fraud and treachery). Added to these are two unlike categories that are specifically spiritual: Limbo, in Circle 1, contains the virtuous pagans who were not sinful but were ignorant of Christ, and Circle 6 contains the heretics who contradicted the doctrine and confused the spirit of Christ. The circles number 9, with the addition of Satan completing the structure of 9 + 1 = 10.

Durante degli Alighieri, mononymously referred to as Dante (UK 
/ˈdænti/, US /ˈdɑːnteɪ/; Italian: [ˈdante]; c1265–1321), was an Italian poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral philosopher, and political thinker. He is best known for the monumental epic poem Commedia, later named La divina commedia (Divine Comedy), considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature.
In Italy he is known as il Sommo Poeta ("the Supreme Poet") or just il Poeta. Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio are also known as "the three fountains" or "the three crowns". Dante is also called the "Father of the Italian language".
Dante was born in Florence, Italy. The exact date of Dante's birth is unknown, although it is generally believed to be around 1265. This can be deduced from autobiographic allusions in La Divina Commedia, "the Inferno" (Halfway through the journey we are living, implying that Dante was around 35 years old, as the average lifespan according to the Bible (Psalms 89:10, Vulgate) is 70 years; and as the imaginary travel took place in 1300, Dante must have been born around 1265). Some verses of the Paradiso section of the Divine Comedy also provide a possible clue that he was born under the sign of Gemini: "As I revolved with the eternal twins, I saw revealed from hills to river outlets, the threshing-floor that makes us so ferocious" (XXII 151-154). In 1265 the Sun was in Gemini approximately during the period of May 11 to June 11.

Plot: The poet Dante is lost in a dark and gloomy wood. At the summit of a mountain he sees the light of salvation. He endeavors to ascend to it, but his way is barred by three wild beasts, symbolizing Avarice, Pride and Lust. Beatrice sees his predicament and descends from Paradise into Limbo, where she asks the poet Virgil to rescue and guide Dante. Virgil knows another way to go, but this leads straight through the entire Inferno, before it continues towards Paradise. Virgil leads Dante to the portals of Inferno. Charon ferries them over the river Acheron, and then they start their journey downwards through the different circles of Inferno. Dante meets all kind of sinners and sees the never-ending punishments they have to undergo. The various punishments are adjusted to the different transgressions. Among the sinners Dante recognizes many persons he has met in Florence, when they were still alive. They tell him their sad stories and why they have ended here. At last Dante and Virgil meets the arch traitor Lucifer, who holds the bodies of Brutus and Cassius in his mouth. The two poets climb down the shaggy sides of Lucifer, to reach the subterranean way which leads out of Inferno.

This is a short movie I made for a group project for my English class. It is a documentary about the various levels of Hell to fit the sins, as described by 14th century poet Dante Alighieri. Although we filmed them, the framerate was for some reason poor; as such, we decided to leave them out. This is a short movie I made for a group project for my English class. It is a documentary about the various levels of Hell to fit the sins, as described by 14th century poet Dante Alighieri.

"L'Inferno" took over three years to make and was the first full-length Italian feature film ever made. The film was first screened in Naples in the Teatro Mercadante on March 10, 1911. The film was an international success, taking more than $2 million in the United States alone.
"(Using Google Translate) The film is composed of 54 scenes. Faithfully recounts the first canto of the Divine Comedy, a series of animated tableaux inspired by the illustrations of Gustave Doré. In the dark forest Dante meets Virgil, and with him begins the distance between the circles and the Malebolge, where he met all the famous characters of the poem. In Caina hears the story of Count Ugolino and then they see Lucifer with three heads, tearing a man who struggles, before being able "to see the stars." Each scene uses special effects in a realistic function: the lustful dragged by the storm (overlay), the open side of Muhammad, the severed head of Bertrand de Born (multiple exposure), the transformation of the thieves in snakes (replaced by assembly).
From the point of view of film technique there is known a whole series of joints of the frame to break the monotony of the typical mean field along and fixed: there are riquadrature (displacements of the frame of the machine, the simplest type of camera movement) , assembly of more shots, with different scale of plans, etc.., with the technical features common between 1908 and 1910. but we can not yet speak of assembly used as a narrative, that is to urge the history and characterization of the characters: the frame is selected according to the special effects and the visual spectacle, in fact we are still in the realm of so-called cinema of attractions, ie where the visual part is predominant in relation to related story (which in the end is only a pretext to stage effects special), even if you are paving the way narrative cinema that will bring a little later, in 1914, the cornerstone of Cabiria Giovanni Pastrone."

The poem's imaginative and allegorical vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
The poem begins on the night before Good Friday in the year 1300, "halfway along our life's path" . Dante is thirty-five years old, lost in a dark wood (understood as sin) assailed by beasts (a lion, a leopard, and a she-wolf) he cannot evade, and unable to find the "straight way" -- also translatable as "right way" -- to salvation (symbolized by the sun behind the mountain). Conscious that he is ruining himself and that he is falling into a "low place" where the sun is silent , Dante is at last rescued by Virgil, and the two of them begin their journey to the underworld. Each sin's punishment in Inferno is a contrapasso, a symbolic instance of poetic justice; for example, fortune-tellers have to walk with their heads on backwards, unable to see what is ahead, because that was what they had tried to do in life:
Allegorically, the Inferno represents the Christian soul seeing sin for what it really is, and the three beasts represent three types of sin: the self-indulgent, the violent, and the malicious. These three types of sin also provide the three main divisions of Dante's Hell: Upper Hell, outside the city of Dis, for the four sins of indulgence (lust, gluttony, avarice, anger); Circle 7 for the sins of violence; and Circles 8 and 9 for the sins of malice (fraud and treachery). Added to these are two unlike categories that are specifically spiritual: Limbo, in Circle 1, contains the virtuous pagans who were not sinful but were ignorant of Christ, and Circle 6 contains the heretics who contradicted the doctrine and confused the spirit of Christ. The circles number 9, with the addition of Satan completing the structure of 9 + 1 = 10.

The De Monarchia is one of the main works by Dante Alighieri. It is a treatise on secular and religious power, and more specifically on the relationship between secular authority (represented by the Holy Roman Emperor) and religious authority (represented by the Pope). The work is composed of three books, in which Dante condemns the theocratic conception of the power elaborated by the Roman Church and defends that both the Pope and the Emperor derive their power from God, and, that being so, God gave to each power in one certain area of life, which means they should not interfere with each other's power and one should not be considered above the other. - Summary by Leni

Considered the most important work of Italian literature, the poem has also has enormous historical influence on western literature and culture more generally. Dante represents the three realms of the afterlife in his three canticles (Inferno--Hell; Purgatorio--Purgatory; Paradiso--Paradise) in a way that reflects and, at the same time, goes beyond Christian tradition of the 14th Century. Dante is sometimes called "The father of the Italian language" for the linguistic influence of the Comedy, which helped to elevate his native Florentine Tuscan dialect to the level of national standard. The poem is written in the first person, and tells of Dante's journey through the three realms of the dead, lasting from the night before Good Friday to the Wednesday after Easter in the spring of 1300. 2015: l'Inferno è nel caos. Una schiera di nuovi peccatori arriva ogni giorno ad affollare gli uffici di Minosse. Ma l'Inferno è una struttura vecchia, antiquata: i nuovi peccatori, non trovando una giusta collocazione, si disperdono tra i gironi. Lucifero viene ricevuto direttamente da Dio, che cerca una soluzione. L'idea vincente è una catalogazione dei nuovi peccati sulla Terra. E a chi affidare quest'incarico se non a Dante Alighieri, che già una volta, a suo tempo, svolse questo compito con eccellenti risultati?
Dante viene così catapultato in una grande città italiana, e trova finalmente la sua guida, colui che lo accompagnerà alla ricerca dei "nuovi peccati": Demetrio Virgilio, un trentenne precario che si appresta, come ogni mattina, ad affrontare un'altra "giornata d'Inferno".

La Divina Commedia e' riproposta in chiave moderna in un film indipendente che dipinge un aldila' elaborato e ricco di dettagli ai quali dare minuziosamente la caccia tra i versi del testo originale.
In un film, produzione indipendente, pieno di effetti speciali, DANTE vi presenta un aldila' dettagliato come l'autore fiorentino del 1300 lo ha descritto.

The film was first screened in Naples in the Teatro Mercadante on March 10, 1911.[1] The film's depictions of hell closely followed those in the engravings of Gustave Doré for an edition of The Divine Comedy, which were familiar to an international audience, and employed several special effects.The film was an international success, taking more than $2 million in the United States alone. The length of the film allowed U.S. theater owners to raise ticket prices. It is considered by many scholars and fans as being the finest film adaptation of Dante's work to date.
The scenes from hell from the film were reused in an American 1936 exploitation film Hell-O-Vision and the 1944 race film Go Down, Death! Some American state film censor boards required removal of the hell sequences from L'Inferno used in Go Down, Death! such as one where a woman's bare breast is momentarily seen.

Im Rahmen der 15. Woche der Italienischen Sprache in der Welt
Marathon-Lesung des Fegefeuers aus der Göttlichen Komödie von Dante Aligheri. Es lesen 33 Stimmen aus Politik, Wissenschaft, Kunst und Kultur (auf Italienisch und Deutsch mit zweisprachigen Übertiteln).
Nach dem großen Erfolg der Marathon-Lesung aus Dantes Divina Commedia – dem Vortrag des gesamten Inferno – im vergangenen Jahr geht 2015, zum 750. Geburtstag von Dante Alighieri, die Reise weiter: 33 Stimmen aus Politik, Kunst und Kultur lesen den zweiten Teil der Göttlichen Komödie – das Fegefeuer. Wir werden auf den Berg der Läuterung geführt, auf dessen Terrassen die Seelen Verirrungen der Geschichte, Politik und Lebensführung aufarbeiten. Wie schon im Inferno richten sich auch hier Kritik und Reflexion auf die irdischen Verhältnisse zu Dantes Zeit – die in vieler Hinsicht den heutigen bestürzend ähneln. Im Unterschied zur harschen Welt des Inferno ist jedoch der Läuterungsberg ein Reich der Zwischentöne, der subtilen Farben und Klänge. Und auf dem Gipfel des Berges, im Irdischen Paradies, wird Dante seiner Jugendliebe Beatrice wieder begegnen.

Nell’ambito della XV Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo
Mein Dante – la maratona continua: Maratona di lettura del Purgatorio della Divina Commedia di Dante Alighieri con 33 voci provenienti dagli ambiti della politica, dell’arte e della cultura, in italiano e in tedesco, con i sopratitoli in entrambe le lingue.
Dopo il grande successo della lettura dell’intera cantica dell’Inferno dalla Divina Commedia di Dante nell’anno scorso, nel 2015, in occasione del 750esimo anniversario della nascita del grande poeta, continua il viaggio. La seconda parte della sua Commedia ci conduce sul monte della purificazione, sulle cui cornici le anime smarrite della storia rielaborano la loro politica e condotta di vita. Come già nell’Inferno, la critica e la riflessione fanno riferimento ancora una volta alla situazione terrena al tempo di Dante, che da molti punti di vista ricorda in maniera sconcertante la situazione odierna. Diversamente dall’aspro mondo dell’Inferno, il monte della purificazione è, tuttavia, un regno fatto di mezzi toni, di colori e rumori delicati. Dopo il grande successo della lettura dell’intera cantica dell’Inferno dalla Divina Commedia di Dante nell’anno scorso, nel 2015, in occasione del 750esimo anniversario della nascita del grande poeta, continua il viaggio. La seconda parte della sua Commedia ci conduce sul monte della purificazione, sulle cui cornici le anime smarrite della storia rielaborano la loro politica e condotta di vita. Come già nell’Inferno, la critica e la riflessione fanno riferimento ancora una volta alla situazione terrena al tempo di Dante, che da molti punti di vista ricorda in maniera sconcertante la situazione odierna. Diversamente dall’aspro mondo dell’Inferno, il monte della purificazione è, tuttavia, un regno fatto di mezzi toni, di colori e rumori delicati. Sulla vetta del monte, nel Paradiso terrestre, Dante incontrerà di nuovo il suo amore di gioventù: Beatrice.
