John Cage (1912–92) is regarded as one of the most influential and controversial composers of the 20th century.
It is not only his music that this reputation is based on – his ideas were revolutionary, and he cast doubt on the supremacy of European art, and music when it was unchallenged and such views were considered heretic.
Cage rejected the status held by harmony, instrumentation, and even the development of music from one point to another. He disconnected harmony from rhythm to liberate western music from its hitherto privileged hierarchies – iconoclastic stuff for 1940s America!
Cage studied with Schoenberg in Los Angeles, and although he adopted the 12-tone technique he abandoned Schoenberg’s expressionist style.
Cage was also influenced the maverick composer – Erik Satie. Satie had also ridiculed the musical establishment, and Cage arranged Satie’s longest work Socrate (a monodrama for piano and voice) for two pianos. It is worth mentioning that Cage’s favourite Satie composition was Vexations, a short work for piano, with instructions that it may be performed 840 times without pause or change.

Dvorák considered himself only a modest pianist (he was a string player), and his music for piano has for long been neglected and considered of secondary importance to his symphonies, concertos and chamber works. Whilst undoubtedly true, the output for solo piano does contain some of his more mundane efforts, closer study of the music reveals some gems well worth getting to know, and that all contain his innate gift for melody.
His largest work featuring piano, the G major piano concerto has finally made some headway in the concert repertoire, and has always been championed by leading pianists – Richter and Aimard to name just two. The piano trios, quartets and the quintet all have effective piano parts, and are well laid out for the pianist. So why has the solo piano music been so neglected?
These works span his entire creative life, from the simple little Polka in E of 1860, to the Theme and Variations, Suite in A, and the Humoresques of 1894. These last three works are his masterpieces for piano, and indeed the Seventh Humoresque in G became very famous due its use in a Joan Crawford film in 1946, and through arrangements by Fritz Kreisler and Art Tatum. The Suite in A, dating from his time in America (where he composed his Ninth Symphony ‘From the New World’) is better known today in its orchestral version.
These CDs contain some wonderful little known music by one the best-loved composers – music that deserves a wider audience.

Сас, Тибор Тибор Сас (венг. Szasz Tibor; род. 1948) — пианист и музыковед. Родился в Румынии в венгерской семье, долгое время жил в США, а затем в Германии.
Учился в Румынии, впервые выступил с оркестром в 16-летнем возрасте, в 1967 г. выиграл Международный конкурс имени Энеску в Бухаресте. В 1968 г. впервые выступил с гастролями в ФРГ. В дальнейшем совершенствовал своё мастерство в США под руководством Леона Флейшера, Теодора Летвина, Рассела Шермана и др. Получил степень доктора музыки в Мичиганском университете. В 1974 г. удостоен первой премии на Международном конкурсе пианистов имени Капелла.
Как исполнитель Сас специализируется, главным образом, на творчестве Бетховена; среди его записей также сочинения Шопена, Листа, Мендельсона, Шуберта, Бартока. Преподавательская карьера Саса протекала в Дейтонском университете и Университете Дьюка, с 1993 г. он является профессором Фрайбургской Высшей школы музыки. Как музыковед Сас опубликовал ряд значительных статей о творчестве Моцарта, Бетховена и Листа — интерес специалистов вызвала, в частности, статья «Символика Божественного и дьявольского у Листа и её раскрытие в программе Сонаты си минор» (англ. Etudes Boreales
Etudes Boreales is a set of etudes for cello and/or piano composed by John Cage in 1978. The set is a small counterpart to Cage's other etude collections - Etudes Australes for piano and Freeman Etudes for violin.
Etudes Boreales were composed for, and dedicated to, Jack and Jeanne Kirstein. The latter performed Cage's piano works in the 1970s, but found Etudes Boreales unplayable; the first performer to find a way to play the pieces was percussionist Michael Pugliese (Pritchett, 199).
The set comprises four pieces. The cello parts are technically similar to Freeman Etudes: they are extremely demanding pieces composed using chance operations, every aspect of the work meticulously detailed in the score. The difference between the works is that in Etudes Boreales the pitch range is limited at any given time, and changes throughout the pieces, whereas in Freeman Etudes the range was unlimited. An excerpt from one of the etudes shows that the technique required involves the ability to jump accurately to any point on the fingerboard or beyond, which is particularly difficult in these pieces as they are to be played without vibrato (Stowell, 221):

1 (number)
1 (one; /ˈwʌn/ or UK /ˈwɒn/, also called unit, unity, and (multiplicative) identity), is a number, a numeral, and the name of the glyph representing that number. It represents a single entity, the unit of counting or measurement. For example, a line segment of unit length is a line segment of length 1.
As a number
One, sometimes referred to as unity, is the integer before two and after zero. One is the first non-zero number in the natural numbers as well as the first odd number in the natural numbers.
Any number multiplied by one is that number, as one is the identity for multiplication. As a result, one is its own factorial, its own square, its own cube, and so on. One is also the result of the empty product, as any number multiplied by one is itself. It is also the only natural number that is neither composite nor prime with respect to division, but instead considered a unit.
As a digit
The glyph used today in the Western world to represent the number 1, a vertical line, often with a serif at the top and sometimes a short horizontal line at the bottom, traces its roots back to the Indians, who wrote 1 as a horizontal line, much like the Chinese character 一. The Gupta wrote it as a curved line, and the Nagari sometimes added a small circle on the left (rotated a quarter turn to the right, this 9-look-alike became the present day numeral 1 in the Gujarati and Punjabi scripts). The Nepali also rotated it to the right but kept the circle small. This eventually became the top serif in the modern numeral, but the occasional short horizontal line at the bottom probably originates from similarity with the Roman numeral I. In some countries, the little serif at the top is sometimes extended into a long upstroke, sometimes as long as the vertical line, which can lead to confusion with the glyph for seven in other countries. Where the 1 is written with a long upstroke, the number 7 has a horizontal stroke through the vertical line.

It is not only his music that this reputation is based on – his ideas were revolutionary, and he cast doubt on the supremacy of European art, and music when it was unchallenged and such views were considered heretic. Cage rejected the status held by harmony, instrumentation, and even the development of music from one point to another. He disconnected harmony from rhythm to liberate western music from its hitherto privileged hierarchies – iconoclastic stuff for 1940s America! Cage studied with Schoenberg in Los Angeles, and although he adopted the 12-tone technique he abandoned Schoenberg’s expressionist style. Cage was also influenced the maverick composer – Erik Satie. Satie had also ridiculed the musical establishment, and Cage arranged Satie’s longest work Socrate (a monodrama for piano and voice) for two pianos. Whilst undoubtedly true, the output for solo piano does contain some of his more mundane efforts, closer study of the music reveals some gems well worth getting to know, and that all contain his innate gift for melody. His largest work featuring piano, the G major piano concerto has finally made some headway in the concert repertoire, and has always been championed by leading pianists – Richter and Aimard to name just two. The piano trios, quartets and the quintet all have effective piano parts, and are well laid out for the pianist. So why has the solo piano music been so neglected? These works span his entire creative life, from the simple little Polka in E of 1860, to the Theme and Variations, Suite in A, and the Humoresques of 1894. These last three works are his masterpieces for piano, and indeed the Seventh Humoresque in G became very famous due its use in a Joan Crawford film in 1946, and through arrangements by Fritz Kreisler and Art Tatum. The Suite in A, dating from his time in America (where he composed his Ninth Symphony ‘From the New World’) is better known today in its orchestral version. These CDs contain some wonderful little known music by one the best-loved composers – music that deserves a wider audience. -

Cage studied with Schoenberg in Los Angeles, and although he adopted the 12-tone technique he abandoned Schoenberg’s expressionist style.
Cage was also influenced the maverick composer – Erik Satie. Satie had also ridiculed the musical establishment, and Cage arranged Satie’s longest work Socrate (a monodrama for piano and voice) for two pianos. It is worth mentioning that Cage’s favourite Satie composition was Vexations, a short work for piano, with instructions that it may be performed 840 times without pause or change.

Dvorák considered himself only a modest pianist (he was a string player), and his music for piano has for long been neglected and considered of secondary importance to his symphonies, concertos and chamber works. Whilst undoubtedly true, the output for solo piano does contain some of his more mundane efforts, closer study of the music reveals some gems well worth getting to know, and that all contain his innate gift for melody.
His largest work featuring piano, the G major piano concerto has finally made some headway in the concert repertoire, and has always been championed by leading pianists – Richter and Aimard to name just two. The piano trios, quartets and the quintet all have effective piano parts, and are well laid out for the pianist. So why has the solo piano music been so neglected?
These works span his entire creative life, from the simple little Polka in E of 1860, to the Theme and Variations, Suite in A, and the Humoresques of 1894. These last three works are his masterpieces for piano, and indeed the Seventh Humoresque in G became very famous due its use in a Joan Crawford film in 1946, and through arrangements by Fritz Kreisler and Art Tatum. The Suite in A, dating from his time in America (where he composed his Ninth Symphony ‘From the New World’) is better known today in its orchestral version.
These CDs contain some wonderful little known music by one the best-loved composers – music that deserves a wider audience.

Сас, Тибор Тибор Сас (венг. Szasz Tibor; род. 1948) — пианист и музыковед. Родился в Румынии в венгерской семье, долгое время жил в США, а затем в Германии.
Учился в Румынии, впервые выступил с оркестром в 16-летнем возрасте, в 1967 г. выиграл Международный конкурс имени Энеску в Бухаресте. В 1968 г. впервые выступил с гастролями в ФРГ. В дальнейшем совершенствовал своё мастерство в США под руководством Леона Флейшера, Теодора Летвина, Рассела Шермана и др. Получил степень доктора музыки в Мичиганском университете. В 1974 г. удостоен первой премии на Международном конкурсе пианистов имени Капелла.
Как исполнитель Сас специализируется, главным образом, на творчестве Бетховена; среди его записей также сочинения Шопена, Листа, Мендельсона, Шуберта, Бартока. Преподавательская карьера Саса протекала в Дейтонском университете и Университете Дьюка, с 1993 г. он является профессором Фрайбургской Высшей школы музыки. Как музыковед Сас опубликовал ряд значительных статей о творчестве Моцарта, Бетховена и Листа — интерес специалистов вызвала, в частности, статья «Символика Божественного и дьявольского у Листа и её раскрытие в программе Сонаты си минор» (англ. Liszt's Symbols for the Divine and Diabolical: Their Revelation of a Program in the B minor Sonata; Journal of the American Liszt Society, June 1984)

John Cage (1912–92) is regarded as one of the most influential and controversial composers of the 20th century.
It is not only his music that this reputation is based on – his ideas were revolutionary, and he cast doubt on the supremacy of European art, and music when it was unchallenged and such views were considered heretic.
Cage rejected the status held by harmony, instrumentation, and even the development of music from one point to another. He disconnected harmony from rhythm to liberate western music from its hitherto privileged hierarchies – iconoclastic stuff for 1940s America!
Cage studied with Schoenberg in Los Angeles, and although he adopted the 12-tone technique he abandoned Schoenberg’s expressionist style.
Cage was also influenced the maverick composer – Erik Satie. Satie had also ridiculed the musical establishment, and Cage arranged Satie’s longest work Socrate (a monodrama for piano and voice) for two pianos. It is worth mentioning that Cage’s favourite Satie composition was Vexations, a short work for piano, with instructions that it may be performed 840 times without pause or change.

Dvorák considered himself only a modest pianist (he was a string player), and his music for piano has for long been neglected and considered of secondary importance to his symphonies, concertos and chamber works. Whilst undoubtedly true, the output for solo piano does contain some of his more mundane efforts, closer study of the music reveals some gems well worth getting to know, and that all contain his innate gift for melody.
His largest work featuring piano, the G major piano concerto has finally made some headway in the concert repertoire, and has always been championed by leading pianists – Richter and Aimard to name just two. The piano trios, quartets and the quintet all have effective piano parts, and are well laid out for the pianist. So why has the solo piano music been so neglected?
These works span his entire creative life, from the simple little Polka in E of 1860, to the Theme and Variations, Suite in A, and the Humoresques of 1894. These last three works are his masterpieces for piano, and indeed the Seventh Humoresque in G became very famous due its use in a Joan Crawford film in 1946, and through arrangements by Fritz Kreisler and Art Tatum. The Suite in A, dating from his time in America (where he composed his Ninth Symphony ‘From the New World’) is better known today in its orchestral version.
These CDs contain some wonderful little known music by one the best-loved composers – music that deserves a wider audience.

Сас, Тибор Тибор Сас (венг. Szasz Tibor; род. 1948) — пианист и музыковед. Родился в Румынии в венгерской семье, долгое время жил в США, а затем в Германии.
Учился в Румынии, впервые выступил с оркестром в 16-летнем возрасте, в 1967 г. выиграл Международный конкурс имени Энеску в Бухаресте. В 1968 г. впервые выступил с гастролями в ФРГ. В дальнейшем совершенствовал своё мастерство в США под руководством Леона Флейшера, Теодора Летвина, Рассела Шермана и др. Получил степень доктора музыки в Мичиганском университете. В 1974 г. удостоен первой премии на Международном конкурсе пианистов имени Капелла.
Как исполнитель Сас специализируется, главным образом, на творчестве Бетховена; среди его записей также сочинения Шопена, Листа, Мендельсона, Шуберта, Бартока. Преподавательская карьера Саса протекала в Дейтонском университете и Университете Дьюка, с 1993 г. он является профессором Фрайбургской Высшей школы музыки. Как музыковед Сас опубликовал ряд значительных статей о творчестве Моцарта, Бетховена и Листа — интерес специалистов вызвала, в частности, статья «Символика Божественного и дьявольского у Листа и её раскрытие в программе Сонаты си минор» (англ. Liszt's Symbols for the Divine and Diabolical: Their Revelation of a Program in the B minor Sonata; Journal of the American Liszt Society, June 1984)

John Cage (1912–92) is regarded as one of the most influential and controversial composers of the 20th century.
It is not only his music that this reputation is based on – his ideas were revolutionary, and he cast doubt on the supremacy of European art, and music when it was unchallenged and such views were considered heretic.
Cage rejected the status held by harmony, instrumentation, and even the development of music from one point to another. He disconnected harmony from rhythm to liberate western music from its hitherto privileged hierarchies – iconoclastic stuff for 1940s America!
Cage studied with Schoenberg in Los Angeles, and although he adopted the 12-tone technique he abandoned Schoenberg’s expressionist style.
Cage was also influenced the maverick composer – Erik Satie. Satie had also ridiculed the musical establishment, and Cage arranged Satie’s longest work Socrate (a monodrama for piano and voice) for two pianos. It is worth mentioning that Cage’s favourite Satie composition was Vexations, a short work for piano, with instructions that it may be performed 840 times without pause or change.

Dvorák considered himself only a modest pianist (he was a string player), and his music for piano has for long been neglected and considered of secondary importance to his symphonies, concertos and chamber works. Whilst undoubtedly true, the output for solo piano does contain some of his more mundane efforts, closer study of the music reveals some gems well worth getting to know, and that all contain his innate gift for melody.
His largest work featuring piano, the G major piano concerto has finally made some headway in the concert repertoire, and has always been championed by leading pianists – Richter and Aimard to name just two. The piano trios, quartets and the quintet all have effective piano parts, and are well laid out for the pianist. So why has the solo piano music been so neglected?
These works span his entire creative life, from the simple little Polka in E of 1860, to the Theme and Variations, Suite in A, and the Humoresques of 1894. These last three works are his masterpieces for piano, and indeed the Seventh Humoresque in G became very famous due its use in a Joan Crawford film in 1946, and through arrangements by Fritz Kreisler and Art Tatum. The Suite in A, dating from his time in America (where he composed his Ninth Symphony ‘From the New World’) is better known today in its orchestral version.
These CDs contain some wonderful little known music by one the best-loved composers – music that deserves a wider audience.
