About this Album:
Alfredo Casella is considered to be the leading representative of the generazione dell’ottanta (generation of the ‘80s): a group of Italian composers born around 1880, including Ottorino Respighi, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Giorgio Gedini and Franco Alfano, who sought to prove that there was far more to Italian music than opera and concentrated primarily on orchestral, chamber and instrumental music. Casella was a controversial and often misunderstood figure – much has been made of his connections with fascism and his decision to remain in Italy under Mussolini – but he was probably just a staunch Italian nationalist who passionately believed in bringing his country’s glorious musical heritage to the fore (he was largely responsible for the rediscovery of Vivaldi’s music in the 20th century).
This 3CD set brings together Casella’s complete works for solo piano. Spanning a period of over 40 years, the collection charts the development of Casella’s musical language, aesthetic views and pianism (he was also an accomplished pianist and conductor). He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1896 and studied under Fauré, and his early works reflect the influence of his teacher and that of Debussy, whom Casella greatly admired. Works from his middle period – such as the Op.24 Pezzi and the Op.28 Sonatina and the atmospheric and, for Casella, unusually romantic musical poem A notte alta show the composer in much more daring mode, experimenting with form, harmony and all kinds of pianistic techniques. Eventually, in later works such as the Pezzi infantili and Sinfonia, arioso e toccata, Casella reached what he called ‘a more creative stage that is well-defined and clear’, deftly assimilating aspects of the Italian Baroque music that he loved so much in order to find a unique, contemporary voice.

Casella
Casella is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Genoa in the Italian region Liguria, located about 14 kilometres (9 mi) northeast of Genoa. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 3,131 and an area of 7.8 square kilometres (3.0 sq mi).
The municipality of Casella contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Avosso, Carpeneta, Cortino, Parata, Regiosi, Salvega, and Stabbio.
Casella borders the following municipalities: Montoggio, Savignone, Serra Riccò, Valbrevenna.

Glossodoris
Glossodoris is a genus of sea slugs, dorid nudibranchs, shell-less marine gastropod mollusks in the family Chromodorididae.
Taxonomic history
The use of the genus name Glossodoris has been a subject of debate amongst taxonomists for over 150 years. Because it is the oldest name in the Chromodorididae it has been used differently by different taxonomists, sometimes including many species of Hypselodoris and Chromodoris and the other smaller genera recognised today. Its modern status is based on the analysis of DNA sequences.

Casella (Divine Comedy)
Casella (born in Florence or Pistoia; died in Florence 1299; first name unknown) was an Italian composer and singer, none of whose works have survived.
He was probably a friend of Dante Alighieri who made him into the main character of the 2nd canto of the Purgatorio (the second part of the Divine Comedy).
All that is positively known about him is what is found in Dante's work and it has been impossible to identify him with absolute certainty with any of the Casellas named in contemporary documents.
To whatever is said of him in Dante's work one can add (with some degree of probability) information furnished by the earliest commentators of the Divine Comedy: Pietro di Dante, Benvenuto da Imola, Buti and Landino give him as being born in Florence, while an anonymous early commentary of the Divine Comedy gives him as being born in Pistoia.
Mentions of this Casella in documents probably include a mention (Casella dedit sonum, i.e. "Casella set [this] to music") in Codex Vaticano 3214 that he set to music a madrigal by Lemmo da Pistoia, and a mention of him in a sonnet by Niccolò de' Rossi.

Alfredo Casella is considered to be the leading representative of the generazione dell’ottanta (generation of the ‘80s): a group of Italian composers born around 1880, including Ottorino Respighi, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Giorgio Gedini and Franco Alfano, who sought to prove that there was far more to Italian music than opera and concentrated primarily on orchestral, chamber and instrumental music. Casella was a controversial and often misunderstood figure – much has been made of his connections with fascism and his decision to remain in Italy under Mussolini – but he was probably just a staunch Italian nationalist who passionately believed in bringing his country’s glorious musical heritage to the fore (he was largely responsible for the rediscovery of Vivaldi’s music in the 20th century).
This 3CD set brings together Casella’s complete works for solo piano. Spanning a period of over 40 years, the collection charts the development of Casella’s musical language, aesthetic views and pianism (he was also an accomplished pianist and conductor). He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1896 and studied under Fauré, and his early works reflect the influence of his teacher and that of Debussy, whom Casella greatly admired. Works from his middle period – such as the Op.24 Pezzi and the Op.28 Sonatina and the atmospheric and, for Casella, unusually romantic musical poem A notte alta show the composer in much more daring mode, experimenting with form, harmony and all kinds of pianistic techniques. Eventually, in later works such as the Pezzi infantili and Sinfonia, arioso e toccata, Casella reached what he called ‘a more creative stage that is well-defined and clear’, deftly assimilating aspects of the Italian Baroque music that he loved so much in order to find a unique, contemporary voice.

Casella is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Genoa in the Italian region Liguria, located about 14 kilometres (9 mi) northeast of Genoa. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 3,131 and an area of 7.8 square kilometres (3.0 sq mi).
The municipality of Casella contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Avosso, Carpeneta, Cortino, Parata, Regiosi, Salvega, and Stabbio.
Casella borders the following municipalities: Montoggio, Savignone, Serra Riccò, Valbrevenna.
